Scents (of bay) and (non)Sensibility

Sunday 16th January 2022

Written by Katie Carew-Robinson (she/her)

The best Jane Austen pun that I could manage... We found out today that Jane Austen's brother was the Church Warden at St Peters and St Paul's in Wymering way back in the 19th Century and is buried in the church yard where we were today.

We welcomed Sharon for her first GoodGym good deed and Jenny & Brian for their second official good deed! Today's mission was to clear the ivy off the front wall and the graves closest to the vicarage. We also did battle with a bay tree which smelt amazing, filled a brown bin to the top and created a very large pile of branches to go into the bin once its been emptied.

It was a very satisfying task as we could see the difference we'd made. We also got a cup of tea and some history of the area from Revd Amy.

Ellie got to take home a baby bottle warmer which is going to be repurposed for canicross... Look forward to seeing the pictures of that!

Ivy leaf in a thing called love....

Wednesday 3rd November 2021

Written by Katie Carew-Robinson (she/her)

It was the fab four tonight and we even got a fireworks display for our run back 🎇

We met at the Lido and ran up to Wymering with Jo as our outrider.

The first challenge of the evening was to avoid the trainee guard dogs at Wymering Manor as we borrowed their gardening tools. The barks sounded threatening but they weren't interested in protecting the trowels and rake...

The second challenge was arranging the lights and head torches so we could see what we were doing. The lack of any other lights in the churchyard did make it a little spooky...

We were tasked to remove Ivy and weeds from the gravestones and to dig up some of the self seeded sycamores. By the end of the task we had created a big pile of leaves etc at the side of the church, Rosie had given us the Latin name of one of the weeds, Jen & Jo had drunk a cup of tea and I had managed to take some very poor photos!!
