Churning Our Keep

Saturday 13th April

Written by John Shirley

Cherian came from Hendon, Dan from Hackney, Lisa and John from Camden Town, Mehmet from UCL (the long way round) and Scarlett from Australia (an even longer way round). Welcome especially Lisa (recommended to GoodGym by our Angeliki) and Scarlett to their first ever good deed.

Arriving bang on time, or even earlier in some cases, we were soon provided with a random selection of digging and cultivation tools. We set to work churning the earth in preparation for seeding an area of Compton Terrace Gardens which had become worn and bereft of grass due to wavering walkers veering off the path.

We took a bucket-full of stakes, bamboo sticks and variously-sized poles, positioning them round the earth we'd prepared earlier, as a subtle warning to any passers-by to "Keep Off The Good-deed".

Then came the seeds themselves, a consistent shower of grass-coloured specks spread evenly and thickly over the newly churned soil by our super sextet, before being covered by top-soil from two large, newly-opened bags.

We hadn't finished yet. There were twigs and small branches to be picked up, making the place look a lot tidier. Whenever we thought the task was almost complete, we spotted many more twigs and small branches previously invisible to the naked eye.

And Lisa did a great job rescuing a park bench from an overgrown bush, making it once again somewhere safe to sit without being assaulted by superfluous branches.

Putting My Hose Out Of Joint

Saturday 16th September 2023

Written by John Shirley

Once again GoodGym was on hand to assist Friends of Compton Terrace Gardens with their monthly gardening group. This time the task was to fertilise shrubs, with a special mixture which had to be spread around the roots of each shrub.

Then it was necessary to water each shrub, to deter foxes from eating the fertiliser. There was enough time for some extra watering around the gardens after that task was finished, at least when there wasn't a kink in the hose.

A Good Deed clearing Bad Weeds

Saturday 1st April 2023

Written by John Shirley

The green tranquillity of Compton Terrace Gardens, created in 1823, stretches nearly seventy metres along Upper Street, just south of Highbury Corner - a haven to walk through or sit in for both residents and passers-by.

After Highbury Fields ParkRun, and coffee at the handy Benita cafe, Alison and myself joined the Gardens' monthly gardening morning. We picked up huge numbers of small branches that had fallen from trees in recent stormy weather, and removed some large, invasive weeds.

Having fought our way through weeds and branches, we then got stuck in the crowds heading for the Arsenal stadium.

Hope and Anchors Aweigh

Saturday 4th February 2023

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Area Activator Simon, Goodgym legend John and new-to-London Goodgymmer Kate (welcome!) joined us for our monthly gardening session at Compton Square Gardens on Saturday. Simon had arrived straight from Finsbury parkrun- the task is perfectly placed for anyone attending Highbury Fields parkrun too!

The lovely Elise and the local team were heartened to see our crew of Goodgymmers present for the February session, as there was plenty of lifting and shifting tasks available! We worked together to help with sweeping up loads of fallen leaves, branches and overgrowth from the flower beds surrounding the park, to give the bulbs and saplings the best chance of growing during the Spring months. Kate and John also participated with plenty of pruning for the bushes around the entrance and exit to the space.

We love helping with this lovely green space by our busy North London station, and we are so happy to contribute. We'll be back again, same time, next month!
