Driving them up the Wall

Sunday 2nd July 2023

Written by Laura Barrett

Due to it being a long task (4 hours) and some people being away I didn't get any other Goodgymers to join me for marshalling the Cancer a Research Pretty Muddy event on the Knavesmire. When I got there they paired me up with another marshall on the Wall obstacle near the end of the course. After a bit of a wait for the first of the kids to come through there was then a steady stream for nearly 3 hours with the different waves of the kids and adults races. The main task was to stop there being more than one person on each wall at a time and to get help if there was a problem. We were given a radio and there was a constant stream of info about which groups were setting off and arriving at or through different stations. Although our obstacle didn't involve water or mud most people arrived very wet and muddy which made the wall a tricky challenge for some participants.

It’s all a Blur

Sunday 3rd July 2022

Written by Jer Boon

I get up when I like. Except on weekends when I usually get joyfully awakened by volunteering to do another good deed.

(Parklife!)

I put my GoodGym t-shirt on, have a cup of coffee and think about leaving the house.

(Parklife!)

All the people. So many people. They all run, dressed in pink for their.. Race for life.

We watered the runners. We sometimes watered tired walkers too. It gave us an enormous sense of well being.

(Parklife!)

And then we felt happy for the rest of the day. Safe in the knowledge we helped clear down the barriers and other paraphernalia that comes with this popular, well attended event.

(Parklife!)

It’s all about the runners who go round and round raising money for an excellent charity and having fun along the way.

(Parklife!)

All the people. So many people. They all run, dressed in pink for their.. Race for Life.

A wheelie good time

Sunday 31st October 2021

Written by Helen Conner (she/her)

We arrived just as the last runners were coming into the finish. The Race for Life event team had endured lots of rain since the early hours and were so appreciative to have fresh and energetic support!

We started to help pack away a marquee, followed by signs, stakes and tape. When then helped pack away the stakes into bags and collected rubbish on the site.

The last job was to drag the huge wheelie bins to the council depot and try not to let them go down a steep hill!

The site was cleared in no time and the Race for Life team had this to say; "I can’t tell you how wonderful you all were on Sunday & truly it was an absolute pleasure working with you and your team, having you and the team arrive dry and happy to get stuck in and help us with de-rig honestly made a world of difference and it was just amazing!"
