Clearing and preparing for the Food bank

Tuesday 30th November 2021

Written by Ritsu

There were so many foods. I didn't directly give food but staff did. I arranged them by food type. It seems that 20-30 family come and get food each time. They need more volunteers.

Pasta Sell-By Date

Saturday 23rd January 2021

Written by John Shirley

Six socially-distanced GoodGymers ran, walked and cycled to assist task-owner Abi at the City Church foodbank in Camden Town. Sree and Leo came more than 8km from Tower Hamlets.

There were two tasks - John no. 1 joined Sree and Sam upstairs, sorting donations into categories. One floor down, John no. 2, Rachel and Leo divided numerous packets of pasta by sell-by date, helped by the upstairs crew after they finished their own task in lightning-quick time.

When checking the sell-by date, It was important to remember what year we are already in. One GoodGymer clearly doesn't want to leave 2020 behind, forgetting that year is now gone if never forgotten.

Those who didn't have to rush off, remained past the finish time, as we were determined to sort out every last box of pasta. When we all eventually headed home, we'd seen enough pasta for one day and decided to skip the mac-and-cheese lunch.

Two By Two

Tuesday 29th December 2020

Written by John Shirley

Four Camden GoodGym enthusiasts signed up at short notice to assist the Camden Foodbank at 11:30 the following day. Two of the participants attended a preparatory 9am Zoom meeting, during which task owner Abe received a call advising him there was to be a delivery from Tesco in just 40 minutes time - so two runners were urgently needed to assist.

As I live in Camden Town, I roused fellow-GoodGymer Jackie from bed and we hot-footed it to the foodbank, where we cleared the stairs of cardboard boxes, allowing the food delivery man and his daughter plenty of room to carry crates of provisions up to the store area. We crushed and bagged the boxes for recycling.

At the original start time, Abi and Isobel arrived. This was Abi’s 372nd and penultimate GoodGym mission while London-based, but she’s already signing up to continue the good work at GoodGym York. In the meantime, together with Isobel, she shifted and sorted a lot of crates to enable the foodbank to service those in need.
