Paul Young earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.

Paul completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Paul was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Wilde About our Doors-es in Grey

York Report written by York runner

Four GG Yorkies met once again at the Poppleton Community Railway Nursery for another painting task. This time we were asked to paint the outside of their new accessible toilet building with a water-repellent paint.

Once we had donned our lovely Arkwright's coats (important to keep our GG t-shirts clean) we set to work with Paul (being our Team Tall) taking the high bits and myself and Sophie doing the lower parts round the back of the building. Vicky braved the stepladders to tackle the front. One wall had already been coated so we only had 2 and a bit sides to do and being the efficient GG-ers that we are we quickly got all the surfaces covered (and a bit of ourselves as well which might be handy with all the rain that is forecast!).

We moved on to glossing the woodwork with undercoat around the door frames and the doors themselves in a lovely shade of grey. The wind didn't help us by blowing the doors around while we were painting them but we managed not to get too much paint on ourselves although Vicky had some new grey beauty spots by the time we had finished.

We didn't quite manage to get all the woodwork covered in undercoat so I'm sure we will be back again to finish the job soon and give it another coat.

Don Worry - It's just more tables!

York Report written by Christine Cockett

After ‘Dom Worry About a Thing’ I went home for a quick snack and to pick up my camera equipment, hoops, and some water, then got back in time to capture ‘Historia Normannis’ performing. I met up with Mila (also from the York Photography Network, and her husband Gary) and took photos of the event, a few with a diffuser and reflector. After some hooping for Mila in front of the grasses, a scything lesson with St Nicks, a play with John from the Capoeira it was packing up time. I said goodbye to Mila and Gary, then headed towards the GoodGym team in the middle of the field. As Don hadn’t arrived yet we all did some hooping.

Sarah, Huw and I helped identify the tables to be returned to the trailer, and together with Paul, Craig, Leanne, Lizzie, Egg we set to work, making sure we didn’t snag our fingers in the process. We waited for the tables to be finished with, then carried them to the trailer, and stacked them as before. We walked while Don drove to the School, unloaded them and returned them to the store cupboard. Job done.

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky, We know Becky's a running junkie

York Report written by Nick Griffin

Our best pals at York Greenways had their hut burned down by Bad Jim's last week (grrrrr) so seven Good Gymers stepped up to help tidy up the mess before Peter got back from his trip building cycle paths down south somewhere.

Me and Barbara G were first to arrive so got to work shovelling up the ashes. Most of the gang arrived by bike although Becky seems to think that running for three consecutive days after running 83 miles of Ultramarathon is a good way to rest - hmmm - when i met her less than 2 years ago she claimed to not really be a runner - a very strange kind of non-runner indeed.

It was Barbara's 100th GoodGym good deed so she becomes the third Yorkie to join the ranks of the extra super good deedy club alongside Egg & Leanne - GO BABS!

Anyhow as Sustrans had already taken away all the big debris and we were rapidly filling the big sack with ashes, we asked what else was to be done.

There were a lot of logs and large branches piled up against the fence and Mitch said

Why don't we drag them over to the other side of the cycle path and make a wildlife habitat?

So that is what we did with Paul, Maddy, Hugh and Mitch running relays from one side to the other, where we noticed a huge rose had grown right to the top of the tree - amazing

We made swift work of it, digging, shoveling, raking and sweeping the last of the debris and finished off with Babs & Becky scattering the ashes on the borders where it will apparently suppress the weeds? (but not the good deeds!)

Anyhow off home we all went - 6 by bike, 1 by Ultra legs and we didn't go to the pub on the way home, no way, no sir, not at all - that wasn't us.

Please Do Stop The Music

York Report written by York runner

A fantastic 50 GG Yorkies came along for a huge task to help Tang Hall Smart!

It was brilliant to welcome along so many first timers to the run tonight, and a big shout out to Amanda who rallied the troops from her own Monday night running group to help us out, we love a bit of collaboration.

With Leanne leading the way, we headed over to the Burnholme Community Hub and were welcomed by the extremely well-prepared Sue Williamson, Founder of this incredible community company. Sue told us a little bit about all the amazing things they are doing before showing us all the stuff we needed to move. Furniture, tables, computers, amps and more, it all needed moving from the old building to the new, fancy purpose-built building which was just next door.

If the sticker is red, it has to go upstairs. If the sticker is blue, it also has to go upstairs.

Everybody desperately tried to find something with a yellow or green sticker and soon a swarm of good was making it's way across the bit of wasteland in between the old and new site. Over at the new Hub, Al and other Tang Hall Smart folk were on hand to make sure all the kit ended up in the right room.

We were all delighted to see Sean, who was our official GG photographer for the evening. For those that don't know, Sean has been a keen GG Yorkie and mission runner from the beginning, but has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. You can read his story here. It's brilliant to have you back Sean!

As you can see from Sean's fabulous photos, some of the equipment was particularly large, with filing cabinets, a piano and a huge photocopier in the mix.

I think you shouldn't carry the piano up the stairs - Becky, very sensible

A few of our runners got distracted doing a spot of filming with Abigail from BBC York, but she was getting them to lunge so I didn't mind and let them crack on with it.

In an unbelievable 25 minutes, everything was moved, way ahead of schedule! It is really mind-blowing what you can achieve with a bit of people power.

With all that time to spare, we had a great little percussion session and made beautiful GoodGym music (or a truly terrible din..) with Laurence on the drums and Sue on the sax. There were also jumping squats and lunges, obviously.

With all our good done, we completed mini running drills to get our legs fired up for the 3km run back to base.

What a massive achievement! So great seeing a great organisation benefiting by another great organisation. The crew at Tang Hall Smart very genuinely said they 'Could not have done it without us'. Another brilliant task guys! GoodGym!
