120 shades of hay

Newcastle Report written by Anji Andrews (she/her)

I think we will all agree that with this pun, Anthony has won GoodGym. It came to him in neigh time at all.

A new task for us at Stepney Bank stables and a new GoodGymer in the shape of Hounslow tourist Mike who is scoping Newcastle out for a potential move. Kudos Mike, we loved having you along for the session!

Paul led the runners tonight including Louise on her very first post-marathon run. Nice to see you back in action Louise! Thankfully the rain (rein?) had stopped and it was a nice evening in Ouseburn. We were met by volunteer Andrew who showed us up to the yard that is home to a few horses, a pile of something with a suspicious smell, and a huge delivery of hay bales.

In all there were 120 bales packaged up on three pallets that needed to be moved into the warehouse and we had been asked to just shift as many as possible. With a lot of squats, team work, carrying, stacking, lifting and, thankfully, a few trolleys the job was completely done in just half an hour.

Neigh bother

We stayed for a few pony pats and met residents Clive and Cash. You can see how grateful Clive was in the group photo as he snuggled up to Aimee, definitely delighted to be able to see clearly now the hay was gone. We cantered back to the Cycle Hub for a quick workout to finish the night off nicely.

I'm all punned out for tonight. Hope to see you on Saturday back in Ouseburn for another galloping good session.

Brit-neat Shears

Richmond Report written by Adam Stephens

There was a sense of trepidation and nervous anticipation amongst the Richmond Good Gymers ahead of tonight's task.

The challenges began by negotiating an energetic and highly coordinated warm-up routine, set by Mark that included everyone’s favourite exercise, burpees!

Thoroughly warmed up for the task ahead we set off for the destination of our task, everyone’s favourite, Nightingale Hill. The route included one or two hills along the way to “drive us all crazy.”

Upon our arrival the Richmond Council provided us with brand new shears, rakes and brooms and we subsequently proceeded to chop back the brambles and clear the pathway at the bottom of Nightingale Lane, improving its appearance for the Richmond Upon Thames locals as well as making it safer for those passing by.

Another successful task completed, “oops we did it again!”

Congratulations to Mike on completing his second Good Gym Richmond run.

Finally best of luck to Kate and Lenka, who are taking part in the Big Half Marathon in London this Sunday. (Anuyone else participating this Sunday then best of luck to you too!)

See you next week.

Pot the difference

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

With Storm Ciara done and dusted, and Storm Dennis yet to make an appearance, GoodGym Hounslow hit the sweet spot last night with a 4km run, a double task and teamwork based fitness session.

We started off with the news, which looked a lot like this:

  • Hackney half news! On 17th May we’re doing a GG aid station outside the Hackney Empire. You can sign up to volunteer at our water station here. Aside from doing a lovely thing for your fellow runners, you will also be rewarded with a free place in the Asics 10k, the Oxford Half or the next Hackney half. They're not cheap so it's well worth it!

  • Now that the January challenge is over, it's time for the Extraordinary Task award. The award will be given to a group or individual who showed extraordinary effort in doing good in their community. If you would like to nominate a task or a person, you have two more days to do so, and you can do it here

  • The Big Six races have been announced - these are events happening all over the UK where, if you fancy it, you can join loads of other GGers. Loads of them are multi distance, all of them will be a lot of fun. Check out the details here.

  • Well done to Remy who earned herself a new parkrun PB on Saturday, and to Matt and Eloise for racing in Richmond park. Great running!

After a warm up and a topical discussion about whether we had ever sent or received a Valentine's card, we set off for Cultivate London. This amazing place is an urban farm and social enterprise in West London. They train unemployed young people in landscaping, horticulture, and also work to engage communities in food growing changing the way Londoners think about their fresh produce and where it comes from. They aim to have a long-term impact on the lives of young people, and amazingly currently over 60% of their fully trained horticulturists have come through their apprenticeship programme.

Our jobs for the night were to de-nail planks and give them a good sand so they could be used as planters in the community gardens, and also to plant a huge bag of bulbs ready for spring. One team had a good de-stressing session with a whole lot of hammering, enjoyed by all especially Jen who pointed out

This is the only type of planking I can get on board with

Meanwhile the other team had formed a very effective factory line sorting, planting, counting, filling and labelling plant pots in possibly our most effective human chain to date. Nice work!

We took a nice steady run back to Turnham Green, where we got into pairs to do a teamwork based fitness session. After a high five sprint, we tested our balance and strength with back to back, pistol and regular squats. All that was left for us to finish the night was to do our stretches and hide from the impending rain. Next week we're back to school sign up here for all the Wednesday fun. Run happy GoodGym!

The Rake’s Progress

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

We kicked off tonight's group run with a look back at the month before, and the incredible results of the January challenge .In a truly barnstorming effort that smashed last year's final numbers, team Hounslow finished up in fifth place on the silver table, which I think we can all agree is a very good result indeed! Overall there was an incredible 8655 good deeds done across the whole of January, which is a phenomenal amount of kindness across the UK. Well done everybody.

Don't forget that we have the extraordinary task award as an extra bit of loveliness this year. GoodGym wants to recognise those who went further to do something good. This can be a group, individual or task that went above and beyond, or which had a big impact on the beneficiary. The final award will be judged by an external panel of friends of GG. All the details are here.

If you're looking out for a community mission this weekend (and one where you can even squeeze in parkrun beforehand) then check out this one in Hounslow helping to create a peace garden at a local mosque. There are even rumours of snacks!

After a warm up and a discussion about our favourite treats - beer, champagne, coffee liqueur (is there a theme here...?) books, snacks, chocolate and Ben and Jerrys - we set off for our task at Gunnersbury Park.

Our job was to carry on clearing a huge overgrown space in the park for reuse. This time we were able to get all of us into the space to start work. Last time we had been there only two of us had been able to start cutting back the brambles as they were too high for us to get in. We had already made great progress, but there was a loooot more to be done still. After a few minutes of hard work, we realised that the floor we were standing on was actually stone, which means we think we are actually working inside the remains of the former lodge. It's going to incredible to see how we can turn the space into somewhere clear of brambles and weeds, and uncover its former glory!

Working seamlessly between hackers and rakers, we quickly revealed more and more of the area. Before long, the beautiful arch was much clearer, and we had released a set of metal fencing pieces from their brambley prison. There is definitely room for a few more repeat visits, but progress is certainly happening!

After returning all the tools and barrows, and our usual fumble with the locks, we headed back to base, finishing the night off with a good stretch. Hope you're up for our usual brand of fitness and fun next week, you can sign up here. Hat tip to Dave who came up with this week's Hogarth related pun. I think you'll agree it's a cut above my usual weekly run report title!
