Gardening with Mr K

Newham Report written by Miriam

The weather was perfect for this mission. Katy, Mr K, and I all enjoyed the cloudy weather and so did the little baby robin that watched our progress closely. We pulled out nettles, brambles, and sticky weeds that were competing with roses and fruit trees for sunlight and space; we unearthed a path that was overgrown, and prepared some flower beds for Mr K to add new plants to in his own time. We filled a total of 10 bags with garden waste - 90min flew by, and we had to say our goodbyes to Mr K, his wife, and the little robin.

Keen, lean bag packing machines

Redbridge Report written by Jenny McCurry

Another busy day at Frenford and was lovely to welcome Katy there for the first time.

With nearly 70 parcels to pack we got off to a swift start, forming a super efficient 'conveyor belt' to pack the fresh food with Linda as chief bag labeller (top job apparently!).

We got through the work speedily with time for a quick tea and biscuit break and even had a few minutes spare to debate GG Redbridge's favourite topic, dogs vs cats 🤣. As usual we concluded that all furry creatures are great and welcome in our group!

We were all ready in time for drivers arriving to pick up the parcels and could all cycle/walk/run home with the satisfaction of a job well done. Well done team, we smashed it today and extra kudos for battling the wind to get there and back!

Yes that was a lovely sitting down job before the real work began but seeing a photo of my lockdown roots was a bit of a shock 😳🤣.

Deliver(g)oo(d)

Waltham Forest Report written by David Stoker

Thanks to David Fergus](/runners/fergus-mchugh) and Katy who arrived to the lovely community cafe in Leytonstone to help the mutual aid group deliver meals.

We each took four bags of meals and delivered them to grateful locals.

A huge well done all!

Holy Smoke, Churchyard Graves and Burning Car!

Redbridge Report written by Redbridge runner

Well done everyone for getting out there in the rain today!

Arrival Looks like only Katy and John grasped the concept of arriving on time hehe:) The rest of today's GoodGym crew (Julia, Ruby and Linda arrived a few minutes later but we all found our way to the churchyard to meet Francis (our task owner) to let us in to do some clearing of brambles, ivy and nettles!

Things to mention

  • This was a first time visit to this location for Ruby, John and Linda. We hope to see you here again (next session is on the 12th November)!
  • Linda is fast approaching her 100 deeds!!! A few more and you're there Linda!!!

Reclaiming back memories The team got on with the task of clearing the sprawling ivy, spiky brambles and all sorts of other weeds. It was very interesting to see the memorials and gravestones revealed once the vegetation around them was cleared. It made us wonder about the human stories behind the names and dates and we talked about how life must've been around 1880s and 1900s.

After spending about 45 minutes in the rain (which was totally fine for our hardy GoodGym heroes!), we tidied up the tools, sanitised everything in sight and Francis let us out of the gate to go on our way! We didn't expect what happened next....

Car on Fire!!!! Three of us were walking down Woodford Green road and noticed a huge plume of smoke and as we were getting closer we noticed that a car was catching fire and, thankfully, two people that must've been inside it were safe a distance away! Sadly they were watching their car go up in flames - the fire brigade arrived quickly to put it out! Unexpected drama in Waltham Forest!!!

Great to see everyone today and see you next time!
