Do I make you thorny baby?

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

13.1 The distance that the Big Halfers are going to run this week - good luck to all of you running, supporting and volunteering!

1 The number of free places you get in the Hackney half next year, the Asics 10k, or the Oxford half if you sign up to volunteer at the Hackney Half on 17th May. There has just been another aid station added so it's your second and final chance to sign up!.

100 The phenomenal tally of good deeds that Eloise has achieved. That is such a lot of doing good and an incredible number of miles run in the process. She definitely deserves a cheer! Well done Eloise.

Many Biscuits and cups of tea you will be rewarded with if you sign up to this great community missions on Saturday - and you can even get a parkrun in beforehand if you want! This community association really needs a hand moving mulch for their tree planting day as their members can't manage the physical activity very easily - you can really make a difference at this one.

6 the number of kilometres we ran last night to help out at Gunnersbury park. It was our third session at the old lodge which we are methodically clearing of brambles so the space can be used again. Every session we remove more - from the first time we came when we couldn't actually get onto the site, we are now reaching the walls. All the hard work is definitely going to be worth it when we finally clear the whole building and uncover the beautiful ruin.

15 Runners who came to lend a hand last night, including newly christened 'Gateman' Andy. He appears when the city needs him most, can crack any lock, scale any fence, break any code - listen for the sound of trainers on asphalt and look to the skies for the gatesignal.

40 minutes spent hacking back the brambles and uncovering strange stones in amongst them. Were they tiny diving boards, pet graves, or something even more sinister? Watch this space for the next installment of the new Gunnersbury mystery when we go back again soon.

6 days left to wait until we do it all again. Next week we're back at Chiswick allotments, helping sort out a site which is used for kids with behavioral problems. They hope to turn into a productive garden with our help. Sign up here and have a very happy week in the meantime!

Follow the yellow chip road

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

We were sandwiched in between two storms last night, but we just managed to get away with it!

As always, we took advantage of our cosy room at the town hall to do the news before we set off

  • The 2020 GoodGym Shindig will happen on the weekend of Friday 7th August - do you fancy it? All you need to know can be found here where you can also register. This year we are heading to YHA Wilderhope Manor and it really is for everyone who wants to be involved in making GoodGym as good as it can be, whether you have just come on your first run or you've reached the hundreds!

  • Well done to the loads of you who did parkrun at Gunnersbury this weekend, especially to Matt who got himself a new 5km PB!

While we were doing our warm up ahead of the 2km run to Berrymeads infant school and our task for the evening, we discussed what we would do if we were London Mayor for the day. From giving everybody the day off, punishing litterers, and banning cheese to making everything free, we had some very lofty ambitions.

After an increasingly drizzly run to the school (or 'wet air' as Matt called it), we arrived to find Sheila waiting with an enormous pile of wood chip which had just been delivered. Our first job was to spread it over the paths and bare areas around the school's beautiful garden. So, barrows and spades at the ready we got cracking.

Meanwhile, Andy, Kate and Mikaela set to tackling the ivy on the back wall of the garden with enthusiasm and zero tolerance for anything left stuck to the wall - check out the incredible job they did in the pics. They even found some goodies hidden away. 'I just pulled this plant and a spoon fell out,' said Andy. Well I never.

At the back of the school was a hive of activity, Luis and Mira were doing some hard graft in the nursery area picking up all the twigs and branches that had been blown down by the bad weather. In just 15 minutes they managed to collect three huge bags of them, which was some seriously good going.

With all the jobs done, we took a steady run back to the town hall to knock out a 4 minute progression run which saw us up our speed and intensity finishing with a minute of really hard running. Great work everybody.

Shout out to Michelle, Cathy and Georgia who came up with this week's excellent run report pun! See you next week for more getting fit, and doing good.

The Rake’s Progress

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

We kicked off tonight's group run with a look back at the month before, and the incredible results of the January challenge .In a truly barnstorming effort that smashed last year's final numbers, team Hounslow finished up in fifth place on the silver table, which I think we can all agree is a very good result indeed! Overall there was an incredible 8655 good deeds done across the whole of January, which is a phenomenal amount of kindness across the UK. Well done everybody.

Don't forget that we have the extraordinary task award as an extra bit of loveliness this year. GoodGym wants to recognise those who went further to do something good. This can be a group, individual or task that went above and beyond, or which had a big impact on the beneficiary. The final award will be judged by an external panel of friends of GG. All the details are here.

If you're looking out for a community mission this weekend (and one where you can even squeeze in parkrun beforehand) then check out this one in Hounslow helping to create a peace garden at a local mosque. There are even rumours of snacks!

After a warm up and a discussion about our favourite treats - beer, champagne, coffee liqueur (is there a theme here...?) books, snacks, chocolate and Ben and Jerrys - we set off for our task at Gunnersbury Park.

Our job was to carry on clearing a huge overgrown space in the park for reuse. This time we were able to get all of us into the space to start work. Last time we had been there only two of us had been able to start cutting back the brambles as they were too high for us to get in. We had already made great progress, but there was a loooot more to be done still. After a few minutes of hard work, we realised that the floor we were standing on was actually stone, which means we think we are actually working inside the remains of the former lodge. It's going to incredible to see how we can turn the space into somewhere clear of brambles and weeds, and uncover its former glory!

Working seamlessly between hackers and rakers, we quickly revealed more and more of the area. Before long, the beautiful arch was much clearer, and we had released a set of metal fencing pieces from their brambley prison. There is definitely room for a few more repeat visits, but progress is certainly happening!

After returning all the tools and barrows, and our usual fumble with the locks, we headed back to base, finishing the night off with a good stretch. Hope you're up for our usual brand of fitness and fun next week, you can sign up here. Hat tip to Dave who came up with this week's Hogarth related pun. I think you'll agree it's a cut above my usual weekly run report title!
