GoodGym-doo! Mystery, Inc.

Sun 15 Nov
Report written by Becs Clarke

Yesterday afternoon 10 hardy GoodGym runners safely met to do an essential gardening task for Parkview estate.

After being briefed in our masks by Catherine and Liam, we split into 2 groups of 6 and 4. 6 runners went off to tackle the larger plot of greenspace, and 4 went to the other side of the estate to cover a smaller area.

Closer to the main road at the front of the estate, TaskForce co-leader Alex led the gang to plant daffodils there.

Julia and Alex paired together and got straight to work planting the hundreds of bulbs we were given in buckets on the west side of the green area.

The Shirleys were optimistic (and ultimately successful!) with planting a larger arc of daffodils, staying longer than the allocated 1.5 hours to make sure the task was done. Everyone needs a Shirley in their lives.

The biggest mystery of the task (and the reason for our Scooby-doo themed pun) came from Sree and Ivy, as after their planting session, Sree came out covered in head-to-toe with mud whereas Ivy, who was working directly next to her for 1.5 hours came out having not a single spot on her. We'll leave Shaggy to work out the answer to that one.

Over in the smaller area, Boris and I got to work planting a teardrop shape of daffodils. It's safe to say Boris did most of the leg work here as I am a terrible digger. We also had the job of turning over the soil and recovering an area of grass that had recently been run over and damaged by a bin lorry. By planting the flowers there, we hoped this would deter the binmen from running over the plot again!

We also got talking to a local older resident who kindly thanked us for our hard work in making his home a better place to live, which gave us the determination to persevere despite the onpour.

Stephenand Ceiling (who celebrated her 100th good deed last week!) worked together on the other plot of greenery. When the rain got torrential, Ceiling showed her determination and work ethic by being the only runner to stay out in the rain and carry on digging, whilst the rest of us ran for cover.

Well done everyone for getting out and doing a good deed despite the atrocious weather👏

Adventure Film Watch Party: "Transamericana with Rickey Gates"

Thu 12 Nov 19:30 pm
The Arsenal Community Hub, 56 Benwell Road, London, N7 7BA
Running and adventure inspiration during lockdown!

During lockdown 2.0, Team #GoodgymRedThunder will be hosting a weekly Adventure Film Watch Party- an opportunity to watch these great free-to-air documentaries together! During these uncertain times, sometimes we need a bit of inspiration to get us out the door and finding our own adventures!

"Transamericana with Rickey Gates: Running 3700 miles across America"

"In a time of uncertain politics and a crescendo of differences, American Ultra-Runner Rickey Gates sets off on foot across America. In the midst of the 2016 National Elections, which saw Republican candidate Donald Trump win the presidential elections, Gates realised that the America he knew wasn’t necessarily the America that was. Intrigued and curious, Gates decides to head out and see for himself in order to try understand and empathise with his fellow Americans. Starting out on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina, Gates journey takes him 5 months and nearly 3700 Miles to the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco, California. What begins as a search for the true America, during a period of political turmoil, ultimately becomes a story of identity as Gates begins to find clarity and meaning in his own life."

Completing a gardening task for an estate's green space

Sun 15 Nov 14:00 pm
The Glasshouse, Parkview Estate, 161 Old Ford Road, London, E2 9QB
Come and help finish this small, much needed gardening task.

Why are we heading to this Community Mission at this time?

Our Area Activator Laura and Parkview task owner Catherine consulted long and hard before bringing you back here.

There is a small amount of time-sensitive gardening to be completed, that is not do-able for this large estate's small Resident's Association at the moment.

Your work will mean vital last minute plans can be completed, bringing life and greenery to this large estate, which houses many elderly, isolated residents who have no outdoor space of their own.

What you will be doing

You will be heading in groups of 1-2 to large, spacious, outdoor areas to plant bulbs and clear pathways.

SAFETY: PLEASE READ

  • You need to bring a face covering, for the briefing at the start of the Community Mission even though this is an outdoor task.

  • We ask that you please avoid arriving and congregating early. Meet in the designated area at 2pm only.

  • Please disperse promptly after the Community Mission has finished.

  • Please bring your own gloves.

If you have any queries or concerns about this Community Mission, please contact our Area Activator Laura, at laura@goodgym.org

Shotgun weeding

Sun 1 Nov
Report written by Alex Dray

On what was threatening to be a pretty wet and miserable Sunday afternoon, 11 goodgymers showed true community spirit to turn up for another great Catherine and Liam Parkview task. After the slight disappointment of a significant amount of bulbs being delivered late... Catherine quickly ran through the backlog of ad hoc tasks we could help her with:

Aine and Stephen were originally tasked with planting an apple tree, but unfortunately it was dead. Becs and Sam were weeding around newly planted lavender. Ceiling and Ottla were weeding around more lavender which somehow included "weeding" some potatoes that John took home for dinner! Ivy, John and Julia were re-potting oak trees. Jennifer and myself weeded the Air bnb bed.

Catherine and Liam were happy doing the rounds and keeping everyone smiling and motivated - Liam in particular provided a morale boost by asking various task members questions such as "Have you ever had a leak?" and "Whats the biggest mistake you've ever made"

Good luck to the superheroes Ceiling and John who hopped straight over the road when the task was finished to help Becky plant some daffodils in the Cranbrook Estate!

Thanks all for coming, hope you had a lovely rest-of-Sunday 
