Local volunteers are looking after this beautiful section of the park. We will look to help them with some of the work they need to do through the seasons. This may include digging planting, composting and fund raising.
This day we will be leafleting the local area to raise funds. Running and walking options.
This is a large 120 year old park designed by Parker and Unwin as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb Conservation Area. Northway Gardens is a linear park comprising three areas of gardens through which the Mutton Brook runs in a channel, lined in parts by weeping willows. The gardens have woodland and grass to the west, formal gardens and tennis courts in the middle area, and ornamental shrubs and trees in the most easterly section.
Meet at the t junction of Northway and Litchfield Way NW11 if not group running.
Judith has done 10 good deeds. They are a trusted GoodGym runner and are now eligible to join their local TaskForce.
Three GoodGym members braved the forecast of torrential rain (well two of them didn’t check the weather forecast) to help Martin’s primary school with it woodland paths. The two Paul’s met and ran from Phoenix cinema just a short kilometre. Met by Judith and John at the school they set about distributing woodchip across the woodland paths. using shovels and wheelbarrows we finished much quicker than expected. It was really good fun! We returned back to the Phoenix for a drink on the balcony. Only as we left did it start to rain. Thanks for doing some good! Ps The bond film starts at the Phoenix this Thursday if you’re interested?
We will help this barnet primary school in East Finchley with its forest school.
Forest School is a type of outdoor education in which children visit forests and woodlands to learn personal, social, physical and technical skills. It has been defined as ‘an inspirational process that offers children regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence through hands-on learning in a woodland environment.
We need to move wood chip to help keep the paths free of mud in the woodland area. We will meet the school caretaker Tristan.
We will do a fitness session for those that want to take part.
Goodgym Barnet are looking to help develop several small protected plantings of trees through Barnet. ( A Micro Forest)
A Micro Forest is a dense and rapidly growing native woodland in a small area. It will provide a protected habitat for wildlife, capture carbon, filter the air of harmful particulates and reduce flooding and soil loss.
Besides these important local effects, it is symbolic of our need to protect our wider environment and it is hoped it will provide an education and emotional engagement of our community. It’s also something that we will have to physically nurture as a group. Its a great fit for Goodgym!
The Council is interested in the project but we need as many people as possible to support the idea. For the moment please register your interest here and we will keep you up-to-date with what is happening as a rolling community mission. If you have ideas about how to promote this to the community please also get in touch. We want schools, community groups, artisans, news media and others to get involved.
Thanks to Daniel Mermelstein for introducing the idea to Goodgym Barnet.
Running from The Phoenix Cinema (or meeting at the park) we are helping to maintain the grounds of Stephens house and gardens this week (charity park in Finchley.)

We will look to do some group exercise if time allows.
Coldfall Wood is a fascinating area of ancient woodland covering 14 hectares. We are looking to help with branch fencing to build barriers to protect saplings and new growth allowing it to regenerate. Or other work needed in the woodland. Meet at the entrance on Creighton Avenue and Beech Drive. (Not far from East Finchley station.) See photo map. Limited places first come basis. Social distance will be maintained throughout our visit and we will work in small teams. Hope you can run cycle or walk to the task. Gloves needed. Our contact is Linda from the friends.
Judith just completed a six month streak of doing missions. That’s so many bags of garden rubbish cleared and jobs done to help someone out and put a smile on their face. Give Judith a cheer to encourage them to keep up the good work.
Goodgym members gathered at this extraordinary forest in the middle of North London to help the Rangers of Highgate woods. We met with Gilbert who suggested we were employed to search and destroy several of the dens. The structures are potentially dangerous and do not provide a useful habitat for woodland life in particular the insects and fungi. The wood is better rotting on the floor. We destroyed four structures before running back to the cafe area to do some exercises. Good fun and a good deed done on a lovely sunny day.
