Jenny has done 10 good deeds. They are a trusted GoodGym runner and are now eligible to join their local TaskForce.
Three runners met at the Phoenix Cinema and ran to Coldfall Woods, where we were joined by several others. The task owner, Linda, explained that our job was to dismantle some dens and use the logs and branches from them to restore the edging around the paths. Not only would this stop people from creating new paths through vulnerable bits of woodland that need protecting, it also provides a habitat for insects - which in turn will attract more birds and other wildlife to the wood.
We worked quickly in the fading light and managed several dens.
Huge apologies again to those we didn't manage to find in the woods. I'm sorry for your wasted evening - and also sorry for us that we missed out on your company and help with the task.
Jenny just completed a six month streak of doing missions. That’s so many bags of garden rubbish cleared and jobs done to help someone out and put a smile on their face. Give Jenny a cheer to encourage them to keep up the good work.
Goodgym members gathered at this extraordinary forest in the middle of North London to help the Rangers of Highgate woods. We met with Gilbert who suggested we were employed to search and destroy several of the dens. The structures are potentially dangerous and do not provide a useful habitat for woodland life in particular the insects and fungi. The wood is better rotting on the floor. We destroyed four structures before running back to the cafe area to do some exercises. Good fun and a good deed done on a lovely sunny day.
Coldfall Wood is a fascinating area of ancient woodland covering 14 hectares. We are looking to help with branch fencing to build barriers to protect saplings and new growth allowing it to regenerate. Or other work needed in the woodland. Meet at the entrance on Creighton Avenue and Beech Drive. (Not far from East Finchley station.) See photo map. Limited places first come basis. Social distance will be maintained throughout our visit and we will work in small teams. Hope you can run cycle or walk to the task. Gloves needed. Our contact is Linda from the friends.
We are looking to help the Ranger in Highgate Woods who usual takes the time to show us around and is very knowledgeable. Possibly general assistance or Den destruction. Meet at the café ( middle of the woods). Limited numbers of places first come basis. Social distance will be maintained throughout our visit. Hope you can run cycle or walk to the task. If we have time we may do some additional exercise. The Ranger is Cindy.
Seven GoodGym members came together to help Long Lane Pastures,a nature reserve in the middle of Finchley. We met up with the friends of the Pastures Donald, Wayne and Maureen. They asked us to help to clear the paths of weeds and to rake up the recently cut long grass. It was a beautiful evening as we started our work. To our surprise Donald had remembered that it was the anniversary of the formation of Goodgym Barnet and that we had visited on our first mission five years ago. They had generously arranged a birthday cake for us to consume at the end of our task. Much appreciated and let's hope we can continue to help them in the years ahead.
keey active and doing good!
Long Lane Pasture is a 1.1 hectare nature reserve in Finchley in the London Borough of Barnet. It is owned by Barnet Council and managed by the Long Lane Pasture Trust. The council does not contribute any funds to the Trust. The trust relies on local volunteers and under a management plan agreed with the council, the site is managed to protect its wildlife value and maintain and enhance its biodiversity. There is access by a footpath from Long Lane immediately north of the North Circular Road. We may look to do a local run or group exercise.
A Tourist likes nothing better than exploring new areas and meeting new people, and that's what Jenny has been doing. Jenny has been to three different GoodGym areas now - nice!
