You Must Be Guttered If You Missed this Draining session!

Mon 18 Nov
Report written by James Poole

On a chilly night in November, six of Goodgym's hardiest runners met to clean gutters, sweep leaves ands get fit and ran 5km in the process.

Well the weather has certainly turned and with tempretures just above zero degrees, the hardiest of runners met at Wanstead House Community Centre. The Centre has been our home for the last three and half years and we share space with all sorts of local community groups, creative writers, photographers, street dance groups and even astrologers. Its a veritable melting pot of community groups.

With all these groups using the centre it is important that it always look welcome and in a good state of repair. Which is where Goodgym steps in, we love helping around the house and keeping things spic and span. A couple of months back we cleaned some of the guttering on the theater building in the pouring rain BUT we didn't have the time to finish it all.

So, with James armed with a ladder heading back to the Theater and the rest of the crew armed with rakes, and shovels the hard work began. The leaf fall around the house becomes a huge problem at this time of year, blocking the gutter and drains and making the places slippery. But with six Goodgymers hard at work a huge pile of leaves was clearer and final sections of the gutter cleaned and blockage free. Nice work team.

With the good deed done all that was left was to head out onto the streets of Wanstead. We're using the darker winter nights to explore the borough and this week we headed North towards North Woodford taking in a more hilly route and some of the quiter roads. 35 minutes later we were back and ready to stretch it out with some post run exercises!

Why not get involved and join us next week for another night of doing good deeds in the borough and getting fit and the same time!

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and it is often possible to walk to the task if you would prefer. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

Ready Wansteady Go!

Mon 11 Nov
Report written by James Poole

On a chilly autumn night, seven of Goodgym's bestest runners met in Redbridge to keep Wanstead spick and span and ran 5km in the proces.

With a huge accident crippling road traffic around Leyton and Wanstead, a small crew met at Wanstead House Community Centre ready to do good in the borough. One of our favourite task owners is Marian of Wanstead Community Gardeners who fondly refers to us as her 'heavy lifting crew'.

Over the past few years we have worked tirelessly with Marian to make Wanstead and Snaresbrook blossom by turning unloved areas of land into havens of wild flowers and green plants. Despite all the signs these community gardens still attract rubbish and from time we spend 20 or 30 minutes checking them and discarding the trash. It's not a huge job but we take great pride in the work we have done and keeping it tidy makes us smile - even if the rubbish doesn't.

Armed with bin bags and gloves the team dashed down the high street removing wine bottles, beer cans, crisp packets and all sorts of odds and ends form the bushes and beds. It's incredible to see how much stuff gets discarded even when litter bins are frequent and well positioned.

With several bin bags full and disposed of, the team were soon of up the round to explore a new winter route up Herman Hill. 5km later and a lot sweatier the squad were back at base for some easy stretching to keep the aches and pains at bay.

Fancy getting involved? Why not join us next Monday as we do more good deeds in the community!

What's Up (Ox)Fam?

Mon 4 Nov
Report written by James Poole

On a foggy autumn night, six of Goodgym's most committed runners met to wash charity shop windows and ran 8km in the process.

With a few regulars away on holiday this week, it was a smaller crew assembled at Wanstead House Community Centre to do good and get fit in the process. Four of the six even did a Community Mission the previous day with Wanstead Community Gardeners, so bravo to Peter, John, Linda and Beth.

Keeping the windows sparkling clean is a never ending task for high street charity shops and can become a significant expense during the course of a year. Hearing about our help at Barnados and St Francis Hospice, the local Oxfam shop was keen to get in on the act too.

Armed with squeegies, sponges and old newspaper the team soon set to work on the two windows and within 15 minutes the windows were sparkling clean - although the inside smears are something of a frustration.

All that left was some easy Monday miles to set us off for the week. At John's request we head out onto the streets of Wanstead and Snaresbrook - rather than an interval session on George Green - but with a twist, we ran our usual winter loop in reverse. It's amazing how a regular loop can look completely different when ran the opposite direct and it can be a great way to add interest to a run which may have become a bit too regular.

With the group racing round the 5km loop, we were soon back at base with just enough time for some easy stretching before heading home for some well deserved dinner. Great job team!

Why not join us next week for some more autumnal fun as we get fit and do good in the Borough.

Goodgym, Goodgym, Read All About It!

Mon 28 Oct
Report written by James Poole

On a chilly autumn night, eight of Goodgym's finest runners met to spread the word about Goodgym and some even ran over 8km in the process. You guys rock!

At Goodgym Redbridge we have an awesome group of regular runners who come week in, week out. In the rain. The snow. The wind. An even on those rare occasions, the blazing sun. They're committed to getting fit and improving the local community. BUT, here's the rub. We don't get too many new people joining us to find out what it's about.

So armed with a tonne of Goodgym flyers the squad headed West to spread the word and to try to drum up some new members. While the two Peters, John and Jenny headed to Leytonstone to hit the busy commuter tube station, Sharon, Linda and James stayed closer to home to target people who live around Leyton.

When people are so passionate about something it's easy to spread the word and in a few short minutes both teams were waxing lyrically about the benefits of Goodgym, whether that been the weekly group event, Coach Runs or Missions. Plenty of people seemed to be interested and a few even promised to head down and join us soon. Great work team!

We were also excited to be joined by Peter, who is the Trainer for Barking when it launches early next year. Keep your eyes peeled on the website and social media channels for details of future runs in the area.

Finally, we have a community mission this Sunday organised by the brilliant Linda. Why not head down to George Green on Sunday 3rd November at 10:30am and get stuck in tearing down some ivy and moving leaf piles. Wanstead Community Gardeners desperately need your help so if you have an hour or two free, get down and get stuck in.
