Dig Me Baby One Hoe Time

Mon 17 Jan

Barking Mad arrivals We had an exciting start to the group session: James, Hélène and Julia had an 'interesting' chat with a very drunk gentleman who considered coming for a run with us, whilst Linda and Sharon were late because they found a dog without an owner whilst getting to the meeting point. Thankfully both the dog and the drunken fella were safely sent on their way, with the dog's owner located and 'go straight' directions to the intoxicated dude:)

Running in the cold night It was such a lovely cold but crisp dry evening for a run on quiet streets of Hainault! James, Hélène and Linda run a good 3.5km with Julia and Sharon doing a 2.8km walk/jog so that we all met at the school at the same time. The sky was clear and the almost full moon and bright stars were just so beautiful.

Hoe before you go It was a super fun session with plenty of banter, jokes and 'Gardening music'! With the current outbreak it's difficult to get kids to maintain the school's allotment so tonight we helped to plant out onions and beans as well doing a bit (a lot!) of weeding!!! Linda, Hélène and Sharon made a good dent in a very overgrown with weeds raised beds. James was 'raking it in' by doing rows for veg planting. Hélène and Julia planted onions and broad beans so hopefully we'll see some young seedlings in a few weeks!

We walked back in the brisk manner to keep warm - great session with lots achieved and fun social banter! Well done everyone!

I hope to arrange a weekly SUNNYday run to a natural water source, in Redbridge, for us to litter pick on the banks of.

9am Start : Barnardo's Head Office (IG6 1QG) : 1.6KM Run

9.20am Mid point : Fairlop Waters (Bank Side) : Litter Pick

11.00am End : Barnardo's Head Office (IG6 1QG) : 1.6KM Run

I suggest each bringing a bin liner and protective gloves.

Please ask should you have any questions. The ground may be slippery on the river banks. Please wear suitable footwear, meaning trail running shoes if you have them.

"Where is the lake?", we pondered

Sun 16 Jan
Report written by Jay Rosenberg

Feeling energised, we met at 9am outside Barnardo's Head Office for the second ever SUNNYday Community Mission!

The group ran at a social pace to Roding Valley Lake. After making it to Roding Valley Meadows, we experienced a technical glitch. Being left to our own "devices" we decided to sniff out the Lake ourselves, but a stream was the only source of water found, plus some puddles. This however did not deter us.

We were greeted by many pooches and grateful passersby whilst out litter picking. Feeling virtuous and full of praise we put our sacks of rubbish in the bin and run 8km/5miles back to base whilst pondering where the lake actually was, which prompted this weeks pun.

In the words of Rihanna... we may have to "Pon de Replay" this one! ;)
