999 Deeds but the Quiz ain’t one

Sun 28 Nov
Report written by Aine Hester

Two teams enjoyed a fun evening at the coborn as a "1000th task eve" party for Beth including a special team name for the occasion.

We had two teams: 999 deeds but the quiz ain’t one Vs The most normal in the team - (not quite sure of the story here, we'll have to ask Ivy and Jo!)

There were scotch eggs, many red wines, a dessert and a scandalous book - and all of that was before there was even a quiz question asked!

We'll be back again in January to go again.

Roll Lotta Love

Mon 22 Nov
Report written by Laura Williams

Roll it? It’s just that it appears to be rooted into the ground.”

And so we returned to Meath Gardens for Week 2 of The Big Tree Roll.

Background

For the last two weeks, we’ve been helping the fabulous Friends of Meath Gardens team move one-tonne tree trunks and logs to a newly-created woodland space to help safeguard the young tree saplings.

Tonight’s task was in two parts: rolling and relocating the log to the new woodland home, and litter-picking around all four corners of this popular urban oasis.

Exercise hors d'oeuvres

We started, however, with a tough 30-minute workout on the basketball court, where the crew did good with shuttle runs, seated abs, endless glute-med work ("Listen, these are really good for you." and every lunge variation known to man.

We welcomed first time GoodGymers Emma and Bella, thrilled they’d decided to include the fitness session in their first GoodGym outing.

And from there, we made our way to the changing room building to meet Jane, who was our task owner this week.

She talked us through the two tasks, and we made our way over to the fallen tree.

Stop and Stare

We stood and stared. We attempted to shift, with no luck. We took pics, we held lights, we reluctantly decided maybe it was just litter-picking on the menu for this evening, until Rob seized one of the stakes previously used to cage the log, and proceeded to prise it free of the ground.

And so it took its took its first turn, supported by TJ and a second stake on the opposite side. Team Tree (Rob, TJ, Becky, Stephanie and Sree) proceeded to roll the stubborn stump uphill and over to its new woodland home.

Meanwhile, Team Trash were busying themselves filling bags with beer cans, crisp packets and allsorts from every remote area of the park. It was industrious, it was enjoyable, it was energetic, and boy, was it cold.

But time flew as usual, and before we knew it we were saying our goodbyes and heading in various directions until next week.

Next week?

Why yes, next week. When we’ll be heading to Mile End Park to help brilliant John clear brambles and shift woodchip.

Until then.

November Quizzing

Sun 28 Nov 18:30 pm
Coborn St, Mile End, London , E3 2AB
Sociable Sunday evening Pub Quiz at the Coborn Arms

After the success of the event in October we're returning the the Coborn arms for teams of 4-6 good gymers "battling" it out at the Coborn quiz (but mostly just having a chat, testing our puzzle skills and having an optional "best Fish and Chips in London" or a tasty dessert. )

Friends and partners welcome but please comment on the event or drop organiser Aine a text so we can book for the right numbers. We'll aim for teams of around 4 members each and make up teams on the night as we arrive.

The quiz starts at 7pm so please try and arrive around 6.40 to get settled in. It costs £2.50 per person which can be paid on the night.

You’ve never had it so wood

Mon 15 Nov
Report written by Laura Williams

Moving some logs, spreading a little woodchip…

It sounded like the perfect start to the week. Twenty minutes in and there was only one question that needed asking: “How much do you think that weighs?”

How it started

10 of us met on the Meath Gardens basketball court for a variety of shuttle runs, single leg exercises, seated abs and core and some running drills, all set to “the worst playlist for a long time” according to Joel.

The team did good – as usual – not batting an eyelid as I threw in one more balance challenge (“It’s really good for your glutes”) allowing just seconds for stretching at the end.

Into the woodland…

And the team size slowly grew - by the time we gathered for our briefing and headed to part one of a three-part task, there were no fewer than 17 of us.

Our first job was to roll three huge logs into the woodland space, to create a seated, fenced-off area for park-users and TH residents. It was a vast effort, assisted by a new recruit and his excitable, engaged canine friend.

All three teams did good, particularly those manoeuvring the biggest trunk – no mean feat as they rolled this way and that to re-position it a zillion times before it reached its designated spot.

After a moment to take in this huge achievement, it was onwards to Part II: spreading woodchip over flower beds and gooseberry bushes. Again, the team busied themselves doing this at a great pace, finishing in no time, leaving a last couple of minutes to weed the tree cages.

We completed our session with a couple of stretches, a cheerio and the start of the plan for next week’s session.

Until then.

GetOut community garden

Sat 6 Nov

Kieran at the Get Out community garden is looking for regular help on Saturday afternoons 1 till 3 to keep the garden growing and make it an increasingly nice space for the local community.

You do not have to stay for the whole of 1-3. Perfectly fine for people to drop in whenever they can between those times.

Note there might be some Saturdays that we won’t have access to the adjoining school, so there may not be access to toilets.

The gardens are just next to the Gurdwara on Harley Grove, entrance through the black door. Also important to note that we’ll often do something social after, eg little drinky on the way home.

Cheers!
