Amazing gardening work from Team TH this evening.
Yes, a sturdy crew of 15 helped Catherine de-weed the large Parkview Estate, of thistles, bindweed, and just about every other menace to a garden you can imagine.
How it started
We met in our current meeting location to the East of Victoria Park, where we separated into two groups: a small team headed out on a shorter, more leisurely lap of the park, while Chris, for the second week running, took out a bigger team on a much longer loop.
What we did
We gathered together by the community garden, where Catherine had prepared maps and Weed Teams (more wholesome than it sounds) before we all made our way to our respective corners of the garden.
It was thistle-y, it was tough...We dug, we tugged, we loaded, we binned. It was a humid one too, so more pats on the back to tonight's team.
The time flew by, and soon we were posing for a final couple of pics, before Catherine led us through several relaxation and grounding exercises, the theme being 'letting-go-of-the-day', along with any unforeseen difficulties (yes, unexpected adversities, we're looking at you).
...And how it ended
A team then headed off to the pub, for a cooling drink and a chat - a great way to start the week.
Next week, we're two-tasking it: yep, we're at Hollybush cutting back more overgrowth of the Family Area and heading to Meath Gardens for a litter-pick and weeding. It's all go.
Until then, have a really good week.
This is how your Monday evening Group Run looks, folks:
Meet for briefing in Victoria Park, opposite The Royal Inn on the Park.
Run to Parkview Estate in the Greyhound-and-Hare running game.
Undertake 45 mins of ferocious, much-needed weeding. Please bring own gloves!
Finish with Stretch 'n' Soothe in Parkview Gardens, taught by Laura and Catherine.
What's the Greyhound and Hare game?
It's when we run at two different speeds: runners who want to take it a bit easy accompany Area Activator Laura heading out at a leisurely pace, while the faster runners, who want to squeeze in a more serious bit of pre-task mileage, start a few minutes later with Chris B and aim to catch the chatty joggers up…
What’s with the weeding?
Weeding an estate garden of this size without the use of strong chemicals (that disrupt the wildlife) is not normally feasible. But with GoodGym Tower Hamlets…
What will we be eating?
McVities Gold Bars.
What’s Stretch and Soothe?
It’s where we spend a few minutes at the end of the task ‘landing’ for the week: we’ll run through a few post-task stretches with Laura, and then Catherine, an experienced meditation teacher, will help you finish the evening with some relaxation exercises.
Grit and Emma donned spectacular high viz tabards along with a number of other Bethnal Green Foodbank volunteers for a rather warm and sweaty shift this afternoon.
People were greeted and provided with little coloured slips, orders run to the warehouse helpers so that food bags of choice could be gathered and handed out to them.
It was pretty non-stop for two solid hours and well managed by Cathal.
With many of the foodbank's original volunteers returning to work, the team are in need of a few pairs of GoodGym hands over the next few weeks.
What you will be doing
For this busy lunchtime shift, you'll be helping the team get stock and provisions ready for the busiest session of the week...
Although I won't be at the task, I can contact the team if you have any issues. Any problems, just give me a shout (I'm always available to offer remote support for this Community Mission, even if I'm not there) - Laura
Grit is part of a crowd that's making a huge noise. Grit has been cheered by 25 people - that's a round of applause just on their own. We hope they keep it up.
Four good gymers fitted in a task just before kick off for the England semi final. We joined Bablu from trapped in zone one and resident graffiti artist Alex to paint two railway arches ahead of them having the art work added. For such a small team we had two milestones - Ivy on her fiftieth task and Grit on her tenth. Emma arrived early and got stuck in painting the first arch green, and then was joined by Ivy, Grit and Stephen. There was only one can of green paint but we just about eked out to cover the whole surface. We did this in double quick time and then dashed over to the next arch which we were painting white, this time with plenty of paint going spare. This wall was much more challenging with very rough surfaces in the bottom half which required painting by brush rather than slapping on using the roller.
Painting the railway arches (with the artist himself!) for the new artwork: Ackroyd Drive Wildflower Meadow Task Week 5
We'll be joining Trapped in Zone One (TiZO) and The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetary Park (FoTHCP) for Week 5 of this splendid summer task.
What's the story?
In July, a new mural has been commissioned for the arches along Ackroyd Drive, to be accompanied by guided walks from FoTHCP, but the arches need painting white before the mural can be painted on top.
What you will be doing.
We will meet Bablu from Trapped in Zone One, and the artist creating the new mural, for Week 5 of our part in the project. Our Task Force member Stephen is leading tonight's activity on Ackroyd Drive Green Link where Burdett Road meets Ackroyd Drive (just opposite Revolution Karting), at 6:30pm. PLEASE USE THIS LOCATION FOR ADDRESS.
We will wander down to towards the arches together, and prepare the walls with the artist himself, ahead of the actual mural-painting next Thursday.
*Please wear clothes suitable for painting, and bring gloves if you have them.
- You will also have the option to contribute to a short film being made about the project on creativity in the community (not compulsory!)
Grit has done 10 good deeds. They are a trusted GoodGym runner and are now eligible to join their local TaskForce.
Continued great turnout to ensure the adventure playground is at the top of its game come its reopening.
Goodgymers came from far and wide to toil across the playground, reassembling goals, painting benches and containers and building gentle slopes out of soil.
A good day's work in the afternoon sun!
