Don't Stand Bow Close To Me

Mon 13 Sep
Report written by Laura Williams

Not a bad-sized group for this evening's task, joining the wonderful Trees for Streets team for the second time.

But first, the workout...

Team GG showed up early in pretty St Stephen's Green a little earlier than our Task Owners, to enjoy a short workout (and few Cadburys Heroes). We sped through some slow-out-fast-back shuttle runs; endless squat variations and speed skating, and other lower body warm-ups, before handing over to the brilliant Lizzie and Simeon for tonight's intro and instructions.

Armed with A3 maps, highlighters galore and the best local knowledge going, we were soon divided into three teams, over two Bow wards.

Those brush letterboxes

It was a busy evening out on these bustling East London streets but we all managed to blitz our areas: no letterbox too tough; no dog bark too ferocious, no street too long. We did good.

And it was really great to get the opportunity to chat to residents, some of whom opened their front doors (mainly those who heard us wrestling with those pesky brush letterboxes), to come out and find out what all the fuss was about: "Trees, I tell you, it's all about the trees"

We arranged to meet back at the Lord Morpeth after 8, to compare our leftover leaflet stash; flyering anecdotes, pics and post-task plans.

Well. Done. All.

What a team.

A huge shout-out to Simon, who not only took the reins at dividing up all those many streets into teams, but who's also just became the most recent member of our Task Force. Amazing stuff.

And to Charlotte who took some great pics, and to all those who showed up to this step-heavy, productive task tonight.

Until next week, folks.

Trees for Streets Part II: Bow West vs Bow East

Mon 13 Sep 18:45 pm
St Stephen’s Green, (between St Stephen’s Rd & Old Ford Road), Bow, E3 5JU
And it's BACK: the second part of this task sees us taking to the streets of two wards to see who can cover the most ground...

We're one of the three areas invited to get on board with the new Trees for Street campaign in Tower Hamlets! And there's work to be done...

In this second event of our partnership, we return to the streets with the Trees for Streets crew, armed with maps and highlighters in a quest to discover which of today's teams - Bow East and Bow West - will be tonight's winners…

What we will be doing

  • We meet in a new location, St Stephen’s Green - map here - just for this evening (due to where we need to leaflet) at 6:45pm for a pre-task workout.

  • At 7pm, the Trees for Streets team will brief you on your mission...

  • We return to base for a post-task pint option at The Lord Morpeth.

  • Our teams will be divided up into fitness ability: those runners among us will be heading to further-away streets; the walkers to those closer by. But the end goal is the same - to see who can flyer the most houses in an hour...

Trees the Day

Mon 23 Aug
Report written by Laura Williams

It was a decent sized group in the end who gathered to meet Lizzie and Simeon from the Trees for Streets team.

The sun put in appearance; the Museum Gardens looked beautiful, the project interesting, and then brought beautifully to life by Simeon and Lizzie.

Why trees on streets matter

We started with an explanation about Trees for Streets: why we were there; the role of the lowly tree, and how more of them can benefit our beautiful borough. We learned about how the scheme is one of sponsorship, in partnership with the council, and how multiple households can club together for a tree to make this doable and affordable for all.

All a-ward!

Then the serious business of the leafleting strategy was revealed: divided up into two wards, using our local knowledge of house-filled streets, we were divided into teams, along with highlighters and maps and dispatched to five areas of Bow and Bethnal Green.

We blitzed road after road, chatting to interested residents along our way. Those who headed further East managed to get a bit more running in, ending up with a decent step count for the day.

Mine's a flat white

We arrived back at base at 8 (some of us, who insisted on squeezing in "just that last half a street" a little after). And so the remaining leaflets were carefully laid out in team piles on our weighing bench where our flawless, highly sensitive adjudication system ascertained the thinnest pile was indeed Team Stepney, consisting of just a two-man effort of Johnny and Leo. What work. The lucky team won a £20 voucher for the lovely Chiringuito summer meeting spot, to help fuel a future Flat White Saturday for the boys.

The after-party

We posed for some winning team pics, savoured the last of tonight's Cadbury's Heroes, before bidding farewell to Lizzie and Simeon, with some of the thirsty leafleters heading off for a post-task beer.

Well done, team. Massive congratulations on finding the perfect streets, covering multiple miles, turning out on a warm, free August Monday to get on board with this splendid scheme.

Until next time.

Trees for Streets Leafleting Competition

Mon 23 Aug 18:45 pm
Chiringuito, Museum Gardens, Cambridge Heath Road, London, E2 9PA
Steps, speed and sass: This is a Monday night fitness challenge like no other...

We're one of the three areas invited to get on board with the new Trees for Street campaign in Tower Hamlets! And there's work to be done... In this first phase of our partnership, we take to the streets with the Trees for Streets crew, in teams armed with maps and highlighters in a quest to discover our fittest flyer-ers.

What we will be doing

  • We meet in our usual Summer spot by Chiringuito at 6:45 for a briefing by the Trees for Streets team.

  • We'll warm-up before dividing into teams to head out to neighbouring streets most densely-populated by houses.

  • Our teams will be divided up into fitness ability: those runners among us will be heading to further-away streets; the walkers to those closer by. But the end goal is the same - to see who can flyer the most houses in an hour...

  • We'll return to base, where the winners will claim a prize!

We'll also be collecting any spare shoes (women's, men's and children's) for the Care4Calais team tonight, which we'll run across the road before we start our leafleting, so do bring these if you have any.

The Pull Monty

Mon 26 Jul
Report written by Laura Williams

Amazing gardening work from Team TH this evening.

Yes, a sturdy crew of 15 helped Catherine de-weed the large Parkview Estate, of thistles, bindweed, and just about every other menace to a garden you can imagine.

How it started

We met in our current meeting location to the East of Victoria Park, where we separated into two groups: a small team headed out on a shorter, more leisurely lap of the park, while Chris, for the second week running, took out a bigger team on a much longer loop.

What we did

We gathered together by the community garden, where Catherine had prepared maps and Weed Teams (more wholesome than it sounds) before we all made our way to our respective corners of the garden.

It was thistle-y, it was tough...We dug, we tugged, we loaded, we binned. It was a humid one too, so more pats on the back to tonight's team.

The time flew by, and soon we were posing for a final couple of pics, before Catherine led us through several relaxation and grounding exercises, the theme being 'letting-go-of-the-day', along with any unforeseen difficulties (yes, unexpected adversities, we're looking at you).

...And how it ended

A team then headed off to the pub, for a cooling drink and a chat - a great way to start the week.

Next week, we're two-tasking it: yep, we're at Hollybush cutting back more overgrowth of the Family Area and heading to Meath Gardens for a litter-pick and weeding. It's all go.

Until then, have a really good week.

The Big Monday Gig: Weeding with Catherine on the Parkview Estate

Mon 26 Jul 18:45 pm
Victoria Park Royal East Gate, Grove Road, London, E9 7HJ
There's biscuits, there’s running, there’s weeding, there’s stretching…

This is how your Monday evening Group Run looks, folks:

  • Meet for briefing in Victoria Park, opposite The Royal Inn on the Park.

  • Run to Parkview Estate in the Greyhound-and-Hare running game.

  • Undertake 45 mins of ferocious, much-needed weeding. Please bring own gloves!

  • Finish with Stretch 'n' Soothe in Parkview Gardens, taught by Laura and Catherine.

FAQs

What's the Greyhound and Hare game?

It's when we run at two different speeds: runners who want to take it a bit easy accompany Area Activator Laura heading out at a leisurely pace, while the faster runners, who want to squeeze in a more serious bit of pre-task mileage, start a few minutes later with Chris B and aim to catch the chatty joggers up…

What’s with the weeding?

Weeding an estate garden of this size without the use of strong chemicals (that disrupt the wildlife) is not normally feasible. But with GoodGym Tower Hamlets…

What will we be eating?

McVities Gold Bars.

What’s Stretch and Soothe?

It’s where we spend a few minutes at the end of the task ‘landing’ for the week: we’ll run through a few post-task stretches with Laura, and then Catherine, an experienced meditation teacher, will help you finish the evening with some relaxation exercises.

We Stone the Night

Mon 19 Jul
Report written by Laura Williams

It was a great-sized group that gathered to litter-pick and gravel-spread for our first Group Run of the year.

We met in the far corner of Vicky Park where we welcomed first time runners, ran through the health and safety bits, and enjoyed a couple of dynamic stretches.

Speeds for all

In two groups, we then sped off to The Hub to meet Mark and the team for tonight's activity. The Leisurely Pace Crew took it easy with me, with a nice slow jog via the most direct route, while those who meant business headed off for a mile-plus detour of the East of the park, with our running pro, Chris.

A couple more joined us at The Hub and before we knew it we were dispatched into two groups: the litter-pickers and the gravel-spreaders.

Two teams, two tasks

The litter-pickers headed out to all four corners of the park, enjoying the combination of a stroll with a lot of productivity (and great company), while the sturdy team of eight gravel-spreaders got a Monday workout-and-a-half, as they shovelled barrow full of barrow of gravel, wheeled it to the play area where a team of two proceeded to rake it over the swings.

That's a lot of contribution to your park tonight, team: helping distribute a surface to make the swings safer, and helping clear up after a big, big weekend in the park.

It was a lovely time together: warm, fun, appreciated...

More to come

It's the start of our new regular activity with the Parks team, who are keen to have us back asap, so... well done all.

The shout-outs

A special big shout-out this week to our first time runners, Aarani and Naike and to Chris who suggested the venue and activity for tonight, and for helping plan and lead.

Until next week!
