Sun in a Million

Report written by Laura Williams

What a start to the week.

There we were in picturesque, spacious Meath Gardens, with the blue, blue sky; the refreshing breeze and the best company in town.

Tonight's team of 15 was a cheerful one. We took great delight in welcoming Leona to her first training session; said hello to familiar faces, some of whom had joined from the 6pm task at Hollybush Gardens.

And then the work began.

We whizzed through 50 minutes of:

  • Laps and running drills, ranging from hip mobility to knee strike; hamstring-activators and stride lengths.
  • Standing core work, focusing on recruiting those deep abdominals, glutes, and balance skills.
  • Floor work focusing on abs; rotator cuff muscles, glutes - and more core stability.
  • The greyhound-and-hare game, helping to tick those speedwork boxes.
  • Much-needed stretching.

And then that, as they say, was a wrap.

We dispersed promptly, into the setting sun, bidding one another farewell, and looking forward to next week. So, until then!

If you have any questions, queries about tonight's session - or if you're new and thinking of joining - just drop our Area Activator Laura a line, at laura@goodgym.org. We'd love to see you at a Monday night session soon!

The Graveyard shift

Mon 10 May

Report written by Leo

Tonight 9 of us met at the pleasant time of 6pm on a lovely balmy evening on East London at a Tower Hamlet fave location of Hollybush gardens.

It was a tale of two tasks with us initially finishing off a job from a few weeks ago, along one side of the Ellsworth street square, where a couple more planters needed weeding, including tying up daffodils so that they aren't "blind" next year (who would have thought..) and removing some poppies and potatoes.

There was a lot of excited chatter as the team worked hard, with everyone pleased to be reunited with familiar faces and in the fresh air on a delightful Monday evening.

After that was wrapped up, we were back to Rocky Park to blitz what Margaret affectionally terms "The Graveyard" which is in fact a strip of paving between the allotments and the fence. It was beset with weeds which the team tackled with a winning combination of hoes and brooms - just as the clock ticked around to 7pm we had essentially cleared the path, much to Margaret's delight.

After a quick wrap up and customary group photo, we dispersed to enjoy the rest of our evenings with some of the team heading to nearby Meath Garden's for Laura's Sun in a Million workout for yet more GoodGym fun.

Special mention to Leona for her second ever GoodGym task - hope to see you at many more in the near future Leona! πŸ‘

If you have any questions, queries about tonight's session - or if you're new and thinking of joining - just drop our Area Activator Laura a line, at laura@goodgym.org. We'd love to see you at a Monday night session soon!

Band and Deliver

Mon 26 Apr

Report written by Laura Williams

There was chat, there was running, there was a pre-training task... Yep, it was Monday night at Meath Gardens.

All the regulars!

What a lovely turnout. A full list of sign-ups arrived at the fallen tree in huge Meath Gardens, an oasis nestled away behind bustling Roman Road.

We welcomed back Task Force member Kat, who'd flung herself right back in at the deep end, co-leading tonight's task at Hollybush with Becky. A supersquad no less.

And so we gathered in our favourite semi-circle with mats, resistance bands, music and a blue, blue sky.

What we did...

We ran to the basketball court a couple of times ("Maybe 3/10 intensity on the way there, and, say 7/10 on the way back?"); enjoyed some static stretches, dynamic stretches, and a core set-up, before running through top-to-toe moves with our looped resistance bands.

We finished with the greyhound-and-hare speed game, perfected by Simon who did the best hare impression, even after a sprint finish.

Shout-outs of shout-outs

Thanks to Becky and Kat for top task-leading, and to Becky for leading the run from Hollybush; to Jess and Simon for being our speedy, fun, courageous hares, and to the whole crew in general for committing, showing up, welcoming one another, and just being living, breathing Team Spirit.

See you in a fortnight!

Daffodil & Poppy Maintenance

Mon 26 Apr
β€’
Report written by Katherine

A beautiful sunny Monday even greeted us for our activity at Hollybush on Monday, although a little chilly! We were greeted by the lovely Margaret ready for us to get going, but not before showing us how the worms were getting on!

A task of weeding and maintaining the gardens lay before us - folding over daffodils and ziptying them down so they grow back into the bulbs and resurface next year - who knew that was a thing?! We loving learning new things whilst we're out and about. The rest of the beds were to be weeded - but ensuring we left the poppies alone!

Before we knew it time was up and we got sweeping to tidy up before we got on our way again, a few of us popping off for the training at Meath Gardens with Laura, and the others heading home.

A wonderful evening had by all!

"This what we did,"

...writes Calleen:

  • Clearing the garden borders of dead wood and plants.

  • Sifting soil.

  • Putting up a trellis.

  • Cleaning a sign."

> Says Simon,

"Martin, Jo, Ivy, first time GoodGym-er Calleen and I chopped down some dead wood, pulled up weeds and tidied the flower beds around the garden. Then Martin and I watered!

Phew... It’s been warm in the sunshine... Those plants were thirsty!"
