We Were Soil-Mates Again And Had A Wheely Good Time

Sat 3 Apr
Report written by Matthew

It feels as if we were never away. Whilst we may not have not been able to meet up in groups, Good Gym has certainly been active during lockdown with all sorts of individual Missions taking place. But what better way to start celebrate the gradual easing of lockdown than with a double header of a Community Mission at La Salle Academy, with the amazing Gerry Proctor. Good Gym is back with a bang. As we are limited to groups of 6 meeting outside, we organised for two groups of 6 to help Gerry out, staggered during the day. But it was so lovely to meet up with people again and there are none finer than a bunch of Good Gymers to spend your time with.

La Salle aims to provide the next generation of hospitality professionals in the Liverpool City Region and beyond and they have partnered with one of the best hospitality educational institutions in our area - Hugh Baird College in Sefton. The students, who attend the academy will be given an unparalleled training so that they can enter on a career pathway that will include the greatest restaurants and hotels in the country. Aspiring to the highest quality of service will be what distinguish us from other providers.

The project is a massive one, not least because they have to kit out an entire building so that it is a functioning hotel but also because they have a kitchen garden, in which they are going to plant fruit and vegetables for use in the hotel academy kitchen. But time is running out and with 20 enormous raised beds to fill with soil, it's Good Gym to the rescue. We had 11 amazing Good Gymer's attending and so a massive thanks go out to Claire, Ruth, Tony, Sam, Ema, Matthew, Rowan, Chris, Roz, Sallyann, Jo and Ema again. In fact a special shout out goes to Ema our new area activator for Liverpool, not only for turning up for her first Community Mission but doing both sessions. Ema

It never ceases to amaze me how the power of Good Gym can act as such a positive force in the community. When 6 people work for an hour and a half and then it gets repeated, a massive amount of work is done and so it was that we managed to get 7 of the raised beds filled. We have been described as being like a budget version of "DIY SOS".

Gerry was really grateful for the help. He is pretty much doing all this on his own and is a volunteer himself. The urgency is that seeds are going to need to be planted in the next few weeks. The plan is to go back again next week and do it all over again and hopefully we can finish off the job and Gerry can get sowing.

And of course no Community Mission would be complete without a pun and because there were two groups, you get two for the price of one.

We are always looking for volunteers to come and help. You don't have to be a runner, we welcome anyone who wants to help out in the community and you don't need to commit to a set minimum amount of time. Don't hesitate to contact us if you want to do good in your community as we have 58 groups across England and Wales.

Trail Run: Intermediate Session

Thu 13 May 18:30 pm
Calderstones Mansion House , Calderstones Rd, Liverpool, L18 3JB
Explore some scenic urban trails with the GG crew

Let's run together: Part 2!

In the second of two urban trail running sessions, we're exploring off-road running in leafy south Liverpool. Sign-up to the first session, Trail Running 101 here.

The route is one of few options for city dwellers like us to pretend we're running on a countryside trail. Starting on the outer trail of Calderstones Park, we'll diverge towards and through Allerton Manor Golf Club and then on to Camp Hill (I know how much you all love hills) and through Woolton Woods, before returning to our starting point at Calderstones.

The route is between 12km - 15km and is 80% on trails. All paces welcomed (no one is ever left behind) but please ensure you're up for the challenge of running 15km (with some breaks) by training for this session :) If that is a challenging distance for you please join us for part one first and if you enjoy it, you'll have 4 weeks to get ready to run further. Plus I'm more than happy to offer training advice. You can do it!

Please arrive promptly for a 18:30 start. We'll enjoy a fun warm-up before hitting the trails and return to our starting point after the run.

Important notes:

  1. Due to covid-19 restrictions, we are strictly limited to 15 people, so please only sign-up if you know that you can definitely make it :)

  2. Trail shoes are recommended, especially if it has rained, as the trail can get VERY muddy.

  3. Please make sure you are maintaining social distancing guidelines throughout the run.

Meeting Point

We will meet in the car park off Calderstones Road (close to The Reader but not their car park). Don't use the postcode in the listing, rather click here for an exact location.

Trail Running 101

Thu 15 Apr 18:30 pm
Calderstones Mansion House , Calderstones Rd, Liverpool, L18 3JB
Let's run together round beautiful Calderstones Park

Let's run together!

In the first of two urban trail running sessions, we're heading around the outer trail of Calderstones Park. Some of us enjoyed a similar session there last summer and we had a ball.

The route is one of few options for city dwellers like us to pretend we're running on a countryside trail, so a good training ground to prepare for potential runs further afield later in the year.

The route is around 3.5km long. You're welcome to stop after one lap but adventurous folks can join me for the double! Walkers are also welcome.

  4. Well-behaved dogs welcome.

Meeting Point

We will meet in the car park off Calderstones Road (close to The Reader but not their car park). Don't use the postcode in the listing, rather click here for an exact location.

Part 2

I'm organising a second trail running session that will involve a run of between 12km - 15km. If that is a challenging distance for you but you enjoy this first session, you'll have 4 weeks to get ready to run further and I'm more than happy to offer training advice. Check the listings page to sign-up for part 2.

Getting a Kitchen Garden ready for a new hotel school

Sat 3 Apr 10:00 am
83 Carr Lane East, Liverpool, L11 4SF
Helping local young people gain gardening, catering and hospitality skills

The Task

The La Salle Hotel School need help with filling in 17 newly-built raised beds, preparing other beds for growing food and general work on pathways and hedges around the site. The work will involve moving soil in wheel barrows, and raking to remove the cooch grass roots (a nasty invasive species).

About the local organisation

Opening in September 2021, The La Salle Hotel School is a charity which will provide vocational training and employment opportunities in catering and hospitality to local students and young people from around the city region. Based on the grounds of the De La Salle Academy, the training hotel school will be a fully functioning hotel with restaurant and conference facilities, as well as a kitchen garden supplying both the hotel school and the local community.

Bring with you

Please bring your own gloves and waterproof clothing in case there's rain. There are toilets on site and tea/coffee will be provided and maybe the odd biscuit/bit of cake.

Directions

You can take the number 18 bus towards Croxteth Park and get off on Muirhead Avenue East, near to Dwerryhouse Lane, from there it is about a ten minute walk. Parking is available on site.

To access the site go past the school if coming from the city centre and it is the last entrance on the right. The gate to the car park should be open.

Times

We will have two groups of 6:

  1. The first group at 10.00am -11.30am
  2. The second group at 12.00pm-1.30pm

Please give your preferred time in the comments below
