What a delightful evening for doing good.

We met in golden hour, discussed which plant we'd be (with some very thoughtful reasoning) and welcomed brand new GG runners Jesse and Tim, as well as brand-new-to-Lambeth-group-run-runners Lindy, Rachel, Katie and Federico ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Lovely to have you along!

Our task was a brisk 2k from Papa's and despite a couple of traffic light squat stops, we made it to Fairholme House with energy aplenty.

Orsetta from the incredible Urban Growth gave us a bunch of tasks, mostly involving brown stuff:

๐Ÿ‚ Compost turning - which Becca, Lindy and Chris managed with aplomb(??)

๐Ÿ‚ Most of us were based at a huge pile of mulch (basically woodchip) which was to be moved onto the ground around some raised beds. Some shovelled and some wheel barrowed. And we also bagged a load of it which was going to another nearby community garden!

๐Ÿ‚ Then we had our team of rakers, Federico, Clare and Michael who spread the mulch across some weed-proof tasks, just like one might spread Nutella on toast ๐Ÿ‘…

The task was done in no time, and now the residents of Fairholme House have a bouncy surface to their garden to enjoy whilst tending to the veg, and some thoroughly turned compost.

On our way back, we took a little detour for a classic game of rock, paper, scissors with a fitness twist.

Great work guys :)

Next week I'm not about so Sarah is leading a sesh to Jubilee Primary School. Here's the link.

Race chums pick ace plums

Report written by Kim Parker

Congratulations to everyone who ran The Big Half on Sunday - you all did amazing! It was amazing to see so many GoodGym runners on the route running and supporting.

It was also great to have GoodGymmers from other areas joining us this evening!

As there were a few tired legs this evening (mine included) we did a gentle warm up and made our way up a big hill to Springbank Community Garden where a lot of people were meeting us, preferring to get tired legs to the task using another means of transport. We started by working out who knew the difference between a plant and a weed, a common GoodGym question, and then we divided tasks based on those answers.

Anne-Marie had a long list of tasks for us, including:

  • Plum picking (there may have been limited plums remaining but we made the most of it)
  • Topiary
  • Weeding
  • Digging up trees
  • Painting the fence
  • Planting plants
  • Cutting back the plum tree
  • Putting up a sign
  • Moving a planter

We smashed it (and no one got hurt)!! We left feeling like a job well done and knowing Anne-Marie was very happy the long list of jobs had been completed. We were also treated to some homegrown vegetables including a variety of courgettes, cucumbers and plums - thank you

Next week we are off to St Swithun's Church in Hither Green - sign up here

Shifting woodchip with Urban Growth

Tue 24 Aug 19:00 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Helping get the community garden at Fairholme House up and running

๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

That's right, the legendary GoodGym Lambeth group run is back!

Here's how it's going to work:

  1. Arrive at Papa's Park between 6:50 and 7pm. There is somewhere to leave bags and coats if you need to, but please be considerate of others when moving in and out of the room.

  2. We'll gather outside.

  3. After a quick intro and warm up, we'll split into groups to run to the tasks (there are always options for different paces & distances - no one gets left behind)

  4. We'll arrive at the task by 7:30, blitz the task and then run back to Papa's for an 8:30 finish. If there's time, we'll squeeze in a relaxed(ish) fitness sesh.

Sound good? Here's our task for this week:

Urban Growth set up community gardens across Lambeth so that locals can help to grow veg, encourage bees and improve their mental health.

They've asked us to help shift a load of woodchip onto the area around the vegetable beds. We'll have shovels and wheelbarrows and get it all laid in 30 minutes!

It's a 2km run to get there but we'll probably have the option of a longer run if you fancy it.

๐Ÿงค๐ŸงคPlease bring gardening gloves!

Any questions? Drop me an email.

Fruit picking at Springbank Community Garden

Mon 23 Aug 18:45 pm
Glass Mill Leisure Centre, 41 Loampit Vale, Lewisham, SE13 7FT
Take your pick of jobs at this beautiful garden

Welcome to GoodGym Lewisham!

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every Monday evening to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations in our area.

The Task

This week we will be helping out at Springbank Community Garden in Hither Green. One of the main tasks will be picking fruit off the plum trees and there will be other tasks to get stuck into in the garden.

The Run

GoodGym is for everyone! We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together, so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is. This weeks run is approx. 5km in total - don't forget we have the task in the middle to recover.

The Essentials

We meet at Glass Mill Leisure Centre at 6.45pm, so a short walk from Lewisham Station. We have access to lockers and changing facilities, so you could easily drop in on your way home (bring a pound coin or padlock if you want to use the lockers). Look out for the red t-shirts, we're very friendly!

Ivy feeling we might be going back there...

Report written by Mark Gilyead

This evening's task took us up Brixton Hill to Palace Road Nature Gardens but before that, we had a quick chat about our lunches (there were some pretty fancy ones for a Tuesday lunchtime) and we welcomed Clare to her very first GoodGym run! ๐Ÿฅณ

The route up to the gardens is basically one long hill, so we learned a few tricks for making them a touch easier via the anacronym SKAB (Slightly smaller steps, Knees up a bit more than usual, Arms - use them!, Balloon - keep your head/body up straight).

Everyone smashed the hill and we met Gerry who showed us our task. Lots of the brambles and ivy had grown across the paths around the garden so we were equipped with shears to trim it back. After a solid half hour, we'd managed half the paths so decided to call it a day and said we looked forward to coming back soon.

Nice job guys ๐Ÿ’ฅ

New faces clear green spaces

Mon 16 Aug

Report written by Kim Parker

On what turned out to be a beautiful evening for some running and doing good, 14 superstars gathered outside Glass Mill ready to head over the Wildcat Wilderness. This evening we celebrated Adam's 50th good deed after stalling on 49 for a lot of the pandemic, it's well deserved - next time we see him, he might be wearing his black 50th good deeds t-shirt. Give him a cheer!.

It was wonderful to see some new faces, faces from different areas and returning faces! After a quick warm up, we started to make our way to Wildcat Wilderness. It's one of our longer runs and everyone smashed it! We picked up the cyclists and people meeting us at the task and made our way into Wildcat to meet Heather who explained this evenings tasks, weed bashing - much to everyone's delight!

The group split into 2, one tackling the pathways leading to the bees and the other tackling the area around the willow trees. There was a moment when I thought the group I was giving instruction to had weed bashed too far (is that even possible?) but after checking with Heather, it was all good!

Before we wrapped up there was a path that needed clearing by the bees and the best person to tackle that was a weed bashing expert - Vic! The path was cleared in no time and it was soon time to gather everyone back up for a group photo.

We arrived back at Glass Mill a slightly smaller group to when we departed, for a cool down and celebrate our achievements this week.

We are volunteering at Hilly Fields Parkrun on Saturday morning, if anyone fancies joining, sign up here and don't forget to email HF Parkrun to let them know what role you'd like to do.

GOOD LUCK to everyone running The Big Half on Sunday!!

Mon 16 Aug 18:45 pm
Glass Mill Leisure Centre, 41 Loampit Vale, Lewisham, SE13 7FT
Helping clear some space at this hidden gem

Welcome to GoodGym Lewisham!

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every Monday evening to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations in our area.

The Task

This will be our first group run to Wildcat Wilderness since before the pandemic - a GoodGym Lewisham favourite. There'll be plenty of tasks to get involved in including weed bashing, watering, clearing new paths and occasionally fruit picking!

The Run

The run this week is one of our longer ones, around 4km each way. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together, so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

The Essentials

We meet at Glass Mill Leisure Centre at 6.45pm, so a short walk from Lewisham Station. Look out for the red t-shirts! As this is one of our longer runs, please arrive promptly so we can set off on time and make the most of our time a the task.

Sound good? We will have not one, but TWO task options for you.

1๏ธโƒฃ Helping out at home - Papa's Park is where we meet every week! It's a colourful playground and community hub and we occasionally support them with jobs across the park! This week they've asked us to help paint their big concrete bench! The paint is getting a bit flaky since we last touched it up.... There's also a good amount of weeding to do! If you're wondering where the getting fit aspect comes in, worry not! I'll put you through your paces with some circuits and a few sprints around the block!

2๏ธโƒฃ Palace Road Nature Garden is an awesome spot on the way to Streatham. There are some branches growing over the path which Gerry would like us to snip off! It'll be a 3km run each way.
