Serving up a Feast

Sun 10 Jan
Report written by Adele Prince

We took a family stroll down to Catford and the King's Church, home of The Feast. We have had a group of volunteers helping out a few times a week in the past couple of months, collecting hot meals to deliver by bike and on foot to local people who need a little extra support right now.

We were met by Simon, who leads the project, and he introduced us to his daughter and her two friends, who pack and organise the bags and boxes every Sunday (and some weekdays). They are clearly pros at this, with everything bagged, labelled and ready to go (including a gift bag and card for a recipient's birthday). Edward, Hector and I are hoping to be able to help out as a family where needed, so it was great to see how it all works.

The smell in the hall was lovely, with trays and trays of freshly made lasagne in the oven and little boxes waiting to be filled. Our timing was pretty good and we quickly pulled on some gloves and made our own little chain, with Edward scooping lasagne into boxes and Hector and I popping on lids and putting them in the insulated cases.

Soon, we were joined by a team of delivery drivers/riders and strollers, including our very own Caireen and John (it was a real treat to see them after such a long time!). Simon took me outside, so I could see how this side of things works and wave the hot meals and extra supplies (including some bunches of flowers) on their way.

Until recently, the weekly Feast took place here for people to come in person, sitting down to a hot meal, socialising and receiving any other support they might need. For now, things are running slightly differently, but still on an incredible scale, with around 150 meals going out while we were there. If you want to see the team in action, take a look at this lovely short film that they have put together.

GoodGym Lewisham (virtual) birthday run/walk/cycle

Sat 16 Jan 00:00 am
Your Street, Your City, Your Postcode
Celebrate lockdown style!

It's our birthday!

We normally celebrate our birthday with a group run to Crofton Books, but this time we will do things slightly differently. Across the weekend of January 16/17th, let's see how far we can walk, run or cycle (solo, or with your household/bubble). As it's our fifth birthday, maybe a (not)parkrun/walk, or a five-miler, or seeing how far you can run or walk in five minutes?

A birthday wouldn't be complete without a birthday cake. If you enjoy baking and fancy getting busy in the kitchen, please share your creations on Strava, Twitter @GGLewisham or via our WhatsApp group.

Please take photos of any activities you do, so I can put them all together in a birthday report :)

January Challenge Bingo!

Sun 31 Jan 00:00 am
Your home, Your city, Your postcode
Find new ways to get out and about

The January Challenge is on!

UPDATE, JANUARY 11th

Please ensure you complete these challenges solo, with someone from your household or your bubble.

As we enter a time of greater restrictions, we need to find new ways to motivate ourselves and each other to get outside. With our January Challenge being all about the KMs (read all about it here), let's mix it up with some fun ideas.

You can aim to complete as many of these as you like in January, ticking them off as you go. They are all manageable in our local area (with a bit of imagination!) and must be completed within lockdown guidelines. Use your common sense, of course, wearing a head-torch if out after dark, wearing gloves if litter-picking and so on.

To access the 'bingo card' go here (or ask me and I can email it to you).

Don't forget to share any photos/new routes/interesting finds via Twitter @GGLewisham or on our WhatsApp group :)

For your mileage to be added to the January Challenge totals, you will need to connect your Strava to your GoodGym profile and remember, every step counts. If you find yourself feeling unmotivated to get outside, let me know and I will do my best to help.

(In your own time) New Year's Day (not) parkrun

Fri 1 Jan 00:00 am
Your home, Your city, Your postcode
Make your (not)parkrun count towards the January Challenge!

Start your year with some movement!

Many of us enjoy heading to a parkrun on New Year's Day, with some even tackling 'The Double' (completing two nearby events in one morning). I know that many of you have already been keeping your parkrunning going with the (not)parkrun activities, so why not start your year off with some fresh air and movement, by completing a New Year's Day (not)parkrun?

How does it work?

  • Head out (wherever you are) to complete 5k of walking or running
  • If you want to 'Do the double', keep going! Clock 10k in one go, or two separate 5ks
  • Take some photos en route and share these via Twitter @GGLewisham (if you wish)
  • Please complete your activity by yourself, or with someone from your household or bubble.

Make sure you link your Strava to your GoodGym profile (in settings) to make your efforts count towards our January Challenge totals!

Have fun :)

The grass is Green(er) on the Hither side

Thu 17 Dec
Report written by Adele Prince

What a beautiful day to be out and about on my bike! A quick pedal over (ok, I admit it, I was defeated by Eastern Road and had to push the last bit) Hilly Fields to collect a fundraising calendar from the Marsha Phoenix Trust, then back the other (downhill!) way and up and over again to Hither Green.

My task today was to deliver the calendar to a lovely lady, who greeted me with the exchange of a book of her poems! We had a little chat on her doorstep and she told me she is hoping to do a reading at Marsha Phoenix when possible.

I left up (blimey, south east London is so hilly) the hill with a Christmas card to deliver back to Hilly Fields and the sun on my face. All in all an uplifting trip out in more ways than one ☺️

A Hilly Fields Advent-ure

Tue 1 Dec
Report written by Adele Prince

One GoodGymmer walked 8km delivering fund-raising calendars for the Marsha Phoenix Trust

The Marsha Phoenix Trust is a wonderful organisation, just along the road from Hilly Fields. They provide accommodation for young homeless women, between the ages of 16-21. This year their fundraising events have been challenged, but they need our support more than ever.

To raise money (and put a smile on people’s faces) they have produced a calendar featuring beautiful photographs of Hilly Fields (you can find details here).

My job today was to deliver the calendars to nearby streets, saving residents from leaving their homes. It was a gorgeous morning to be exploring Brockley, Crofton Park and Ladywell and I got to have a chat with some of those who had tiny letterboxes that wouldn’t accommodate the envelope.

We have a task set up this Saturday, helping to tidy the garden at the Marsha Phoenix Trust. We hope to continue these visits throughout the year, so keep an eye out for future activities.

All aboard the Rootmaster to Catford!

Sat 31 Oct
Report written by Adele Prince

On an incredibly wet Saturday in Catford, 10 of GoodGym's most dedicated helpers showed some roots who's boss.

Ah, what a treat to be back at the helm and what a treat to welcome some new visitors to Lewisham! A big welcome and Lewisham Love to Sarah, who was tackling her very first good deed - what a day to debut! A shout-out must also go to Lewis, who cycled all the way from Dartford and Alex who pedalled over from Tower Hamlets. Blimey!

No time was wasted in getting stuck in, with Oli kindly giving me some top tips on which tools work best (he's done this a few times now!). We had little teams working across the space, some digging up brambles, some raking, Louie weed-bashing and some very determined root-digging from Hector, Edward and Linda - one tree stump wasn't enough, so they kept moving on to bigger and bigger challenges!

You can see from the photos that the weather changed quite quickly, with rain coming down in buckets and the ground under our feet resembling the trenches. This didn't dampen everyone's spirit though, with a real focus towards the finish line, with whole areas cleared and very satisfied volunteers ready to grab hot drinks and get dry.

Well done everyone, this hard work will take the space that little bit closer to being an outdoor classroom. We look forward to welcoming our visitors back any time, keep an eye out for upcoming tasks!

We had a leafly time in Lewisham!

Mon 12 Oct
Report written by Adele Prince

On a soggy Monday night in Lewisham, seven superstars set-to with brooms and gloves to help tidy the Crofton Park Station Garden.

It was definitely one of those evenings where you might be forgiven for looking out and deciding the sofa, some comfort food and a bit of telly are far more tempting. Not our intrepid seven volunteers, who pulled on their waterproofs and got stuck in.

I was all set to jump on my bike, only to find a puncture had had its wicked way with my front wheel (it's definitely puncture weather), so hot-footed it to Crofton Park, where everyone was already busy, under the guidance of Paul, who gave directions to clear leaves from the beds and paths. Crofton Park Station Garden has certainly come a long way since our early visits a few years back. Since then, some funding and a lot of hard work from volunteers have transformed the space, which is now fully accessible, with nice wide paths and ramp and lots of welcoming areas to sit and take some quiet time away from the busy road and station nearby.

I was excited to see some old friends and meet some newer GoodGymmers, though I did find myself straining to see who I was talking to (it's a good time to invest in a head-torch!). I chatted to Sam, who was doing his best to contain the over-stuffed compost bin, whilst updating me on his mission to complete 300 good deeds before his 30th birthday (he's going to smash it way ahead of schedule!). I also caught up with James, who is new to GoodGym, having joined his first session last week, with Richard, over at Food2You.

Even in the dark, I could see just what a difference a group of energetic volunteers can make, with all the beds looking fresh and the paths cleared of fallen leaves - at this time of year it's hard work keeping on top of this, so our help will make a big difference to the team.

If you enjoyed this task and want a bit more gardening fun (in the daylight), we have a great task lined up over the next few Saturdays, all details and sign-up here. For details of all upcoming community missions, check this link and make sure you are signed up to receive the weekly digest to stay up-to-date.
