It was a cold Thursday evening on December 7, when five GoodGym runners (Ben, Lucy, Emma, Darren and Aimee) kindly turned up at University of South Wales, Student’ Union to watch and support Zimbando, a band with whom Martin (a GoodGym runner from Cardiff) was a member.

Eclipse nightclub where the event was held soon filled with psychology students (and GoodGymmers), who happily purchased enough alcoholic beverages to get them in the mood to listen to Zimbando, who were due to hit the stage around 9pm.

Zimbando

So at a little after 9.10pm or so, Zimbando took to the stage to the cheers (or were they?) of an unsuspecting but happily inebriated audiences of around 150. Under the lights of Eclipse Nightclub, the band played a variety of songs starting with ‘Come on Everybody’, ‘Jumpin Jack Flash’ and the old Kinks number ‘You Really Got Me’. The crowd really made a noise, but sadly, despite their efforts they failed to drown out the sound of the band.

The Bobo Dolls

After playing five numbers, Martin introduced the backing singers, Klara and Shakiela known as the Bobo Dolls, (theres a Psychology reference here  ) who took their places with the rest of the band on stage. The girls looked fab with their cool white shades. They sang another six numbers including ‘Mustang Sally’, and ‘Twist and Shout’ ending with a singalong version of ‘Hey Jude’. The audience really helped with this last song. Which was just as well because Martin always forgets the words.

Encore

So after playing for around 45 minutes or so the band left the stage. Would they return? After much cajoling and coaxing, the audience were persuaded to shout for more, and seizing their chance the band promptly returned to the stage. This time they had switched instruments with Martin now on drums. Would they sound any better with this line up? Hmm…. After playing ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol’, the band reverted back to the original lineup to end the set with Slade’s ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ with more singalong from the audience. After that it was ‘thank you very much and goodnight’.

Carlsberg don’t do audiences, but if they did…. Zimbando had a great night. Thanks a million to everyone for coming along.

RunPun-social-stiltskin award was won by Ben!
