Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)
It's always amazing to see how much good stuff can be packed into 90 minutes every Wednesday, and last night was no exception with a task to help out a brilliant new project, a snappy run and a tough speed session.
Good luck to Eloise, Matt and Danny running the Oxford Half this weekend, Kate doing the Cabbage Patch 10 and Jon starting the cross country league. Go team!
If you're on the look out for a community mission this Saturday then why not check out this lovely one in Kingston helping to create an area for the butterflies. It's at 11am, so you've even got time to squeeze in a parkrun!
It's the monthly social tonight! Head down to the Islington Townhouse from 6:30 to hear about all the interesting things that have been happening across the whole GoodGym network.
After a warm up and a quick chat about all the things we were most looking forward to this weekend, including, racing, rugby, sleeping, rugby, watching the sub 2hr marathon attempt and more rugby, we set off for Chiswick allotments for our task for the evening.
Chiswick School have an allotment near the school grounds and are in the process of developing a project for some of the disadvantaged kids in the community. Partnering with a local restaurant they will be growing food, but the area needed some initial clearing and setting up. Some of the teachers and parents have already given up their weekends, so we were more happy to lend a hand for such a brilliant cause.
We arrived to find teacher Elizabeth, Mum Andy and chef Owen waiting for us with a pile of tools and instructions to clear weeds, dig over the ground and lay woodchip. So with Danny acting as lightbearer, we cracked on with the jobs.
There were plenty of very stubborn brambles to dig out, lots of old potatoes to get rid of, and plenty of weeds to eliminate - all the while Mira was working hard with the barrow to spread the paths with that woodchip. After 40 minutes of hard work it was starting to drizzle, and we had reached the end of the patch so decided to call it a night. We got a group photo, said our goodbyes, wiped the mud off our trainers, and hit the road.
It was a speed session night back at the green, which is tough at the time, but so great for your endurance, fitness and improving your times. We alternated sprints of different lengths and recovery runs for five minutes, and then finished off the session with a plank minute.
Next week we're back to help out Brentford Community Association with their new garden project. It's going to be some good upper body work for a great organisation, so hope to see you there. Until then, run happy!
