Just Scraping the Surface

Friday 16th April 2021

Written by Pauline Harrison

On a bright and sunny Friday morning, five fabulous GoodGymers rocked up at Rotunda College, ready to rid the community well-being garden of a year's worth of weeds.

Terry, the gardener, and assistant Steve were waiting for us with tools and wheelbarrows at the ready. The garden has been closed for a year, so was in need of a lot of tlc. Terry had been shielding, so was very grateful of the help.

Carol, Linda and I set to with a hoe each and cleared around the raised beds and edges of the garden.

Meanwhile, Mat and Ema joined Terry, shifting a whole heap of soil...they are quite the experts at soil shifting now.

Steve had a more sombre role to perform, as he set up a separate, enclosed part of the garden in readiness for a funeral party for later in the afternoon.

Several members of the college staff popped in to see how we were getting on, and to thank us for the work that we were doing, including CEO Maxine, who was amazed at the change. We were even treated to cups of tea and a whole tray of sandwiches ( Mat very kindly allowed us all a share). There were also lots of bunches of flowers needing homes that were offered to us.

Within 45 minutes, the difference was obvious. Terry was amazed, and said that he felt re-energised working alongside such enthusiastic GoodGymers 😁

After just under two hours, the garden area was transformed. Most of the weeds had been scraped, dug and pulled up, overgrown plants had been cut back, and all of the soil had been removed.

There are still jobs to be done...as in any garden...so we may well make a return visit soon. Terry has some plans for planting, so watch this space.

Rediculous Routes and Weedy Tasks

Monday 1st July 2019

Written by Char Binns

Our excellent 18 ran nearly 8km, saw every red light in Liverpool and helped out at The Rotunda.

After a cloud morning in Liverpool, the skies cleared just in time for GoodGym. After all, the sun always shines on GoodGym*. It was the first time that we'd helped out at The Rotunda, a great charity and community hub in North Liverpool. But since we'd not run that route before, we also didn't know just how many red lights we might encounter. Without fail, at each and every crossing the lights matched our t-shirts.

Once we were finally there, we were greeted warmly with cups of water and given instructions for a weeding task to tidy up the front of the centre. The team made quick work of the task, weeding, sweeping down the steps and even doing a little litter-picking until the place was spit and span.

Loads of shout outs tonight. First of all welcome and we loved having you, to 3 newbies: Ben, Lisa and Jak - you rocked it!

Shout out to Yan who has been working overseas for 6 weeks - we are so glad to have you back!

And the biggest shout of all, to our grand matriarch Pauline, who became the first GG Liverpool member to hit a mighty 100 good deeds. Well done Pauline, you're an inspiration to all of us!

Given how quickly we completed the task, I decided we should have a little fun and played a quick round of "the best runners...". Then changed the route home in an attempt to avoid traffic lights, It seemed to be working until we hit the city centre. And then... red, red, red, red! I'm so sorry for getting you back to base a little late dear team.

Great running everyone, you hit nearly 8km tonight - that's boss!

Next week we have another new task and it is a little bit different.... find out more and sign-up here.
