Getting things Ship Shape

Monday 30th January 2023

Written by Tom Mutton

An inside task in January? Yes please!

11 started from The Showroom and once at Ship Shape we met up with an additional 2 runners to make 13 on tonights run.

We met with Nur who told us all about Ship Shape's fantastic work in the community and how we could help. We got straight to it with the following tasks:

  1. Vinyl wrapping the ladies bathroom to make them sparkle!
  2. Putting up mirrors in the bathrooms and taking some time to reflect..
  3. Screwing table legs to make broken tables good again.
  4. Sorting the activity/food bank room so the table tennis/wiff waff/ping pong table can be used again.

When we left the pingers table was clear and good to go, the toilets sparkling, the tables well and truely screwed and the mirrors looking incredible (or was that just our reflections).

Into the night once more we ran and back to base to stretch off and rehydrate.

Until next time, happy running :)

From raincoats to fresh coats

Monday 28th February 2022

Written by Tom Mutton

It was wetter than an otters pocket tonight, but we didn't let that dampen our spirits!

Third time was the charm for Ship Shape. A quick knock on and we were in to the welcome warmth of the inside and the smiling face of Tanya from Ship Shape who showed us the way to the beam room which was to be painted.

We got straight to it, unwrapping fresh rollers and trays and popping fresh tins of paint for a fresh coat of paint! With the taller of us getting as high as we could and the shorter of us getting the lower levels it was no time at all until the room was looking like it had been subject to 60min makeover!

We said our thanks and goodbyes to a very appreciative Tanya and headed back out into the wet to meet with Lucy and Michelle who had done the sterling job of doing some litter picking in the rain as we'd run out of rollers!

On the way back we took refuge in a well lit underpass and took created the 'Wall Sit Centerpede' where we all lined up and wall squated whilst one at a time each of us lunged to the end of the line until we'd all had a go. There were some very stylish lunges seen.

Once back at. base we again headed for cover to stretch off, hear news and head in for refreshments.

Thanks to all that made it out in the wet eve and until next time, happy running :)

Getting Ship Shape, Ship Shape

Monday 20th September 2021

Written by Tom Mutton

On another beautiful sunny Sheffield afternoon we met outside The Showroom Cinema and got ready for the off. Our new friend Mohammed jumped in for the group photo before we headed off toward Ship Shape with James as our trusty back marker.

On arrival, unfortunately there wasn't anyone around to greet us and provide us with tools so we had to think on our feet. We did what we could with what we had and got litter picking and weeding what we were certain were weeds! Despite trying Regather down the road to see if there was anything we could do for them quickly it wasn't a goer so we did what we could at Ship Shape, had some excellent photos at the front door and then headed to the U-Mix center for an extended fitness session.

This weeks fitness session involved some paired work with one partner on the the planters doing step up's, step up's squat downs or box jumps, whilst the others did a lap of the area.

Next up we headed down to the climbing frame and again did a couple of paired rounds of dead arm hangs, knee lifts or leg lifts whilst partners did their choice of press ups, using the concrete steps to increase/decrease intensity.

Following a fantastic fitness session we headed home for stretching and refreshments at the Showroom. Hopefully we will be back at Ship Shape again in the future.

Don't go into the long grass!

Monday 3rd August 2020

Written by Rachel (she/her)

... not because of danger of velociraptors, just because it was full of litter and you'll come out covered in seed burs.

Rachel, Rachael and James met on a Monday morning to help Shipshape charity get their grounds shipshape. Lots of local people use the grounds, but many sadly don't pick up after themselves.

We cleared the flower beds at the front and the most obvious pieces of litter all around before heading into the long grass for a deeper dive. The quote from the Lost World came to mind, which led to a trip down memory lane about films that freaked us out as children.

After plenty of litter bagged and plenty of chit chat, and leggings dusted free of burs, we headed our separate ways until next time

Getting Shipshape and GoodGym fashion

Friday 24th July 2020

Written by Caroline Thomas

Teamed up with a couple of Shipshape volunteers to get Shipshape living up to its name and sprusing up the outside area so it is clean and tidy for them running women's only aerobics class. Charly, James and I with the help of two other volunteers filled 3 bags of litter and then 9 sacks and a large rubble bag full of garden waste.
