Logging another good deed!

Monday 20th November 2023

Written by Tom Mutton

We had two new runners join us last night, a BIG GG welcome to:

Alba

Tom

Give them both a woop, hola, cheer and a follow!

Both Alba and Tom enjoyed the session and said they would be back for more, so it will be great to see them again soon!

This weeks task was a great one up at Heeley City Farm where we met Julie Blacker at the office, who gave us a quick run down of the evenings activities. The task was to move big wet logs from the bottom of a field, up and out of the field and into a poly tunnel where they can be dried out and cut, ready for sale to the public, with all funds going back into on site projects.

It was slippery under foot in the field where the logs were stacked so the first job was to lay down some scaffolding for us to walk and wheel our way across with barrows full of wood. We love a good plank at GG, so this was no probs at all.

We all managed a good number of loads with minimal spillage along route. We even had time to check out all of the animals on the farm including pigmy goats and pregnant pigs!

Julie was very thankful to us all and passed on her thanks from Nigel who is normally lumbered with this job..

Until next time, happy running! :)

Providing some lumbar support at Heeley City Farm

Monday 11th October 2021

Written by Tom Mutton

WHAT A TASK we had this week!

It had it all;

  • Sledgehammers
  • Logs
  • Lights
  • Hills
  • Goats
  • Cereal!

We met with the lovely Julie of Heeley City Farm (HCF) who let us into this gem of a place and through the site to the field we would be working in past all of the very cute goats.

HCF have had to have some trees on site felled and the larger logs needed splitting, bagging and shifting so that they can be dried and sold in the future to bring some income into the site which doesn't have any monetary support from the Council and needs to be self sustaining so this was a great way for us to help out.

We got straight to it, splitting.... into smaller teams:

  • Log splitters - 'I wanna be... your sledgehammer!'
  • Assistant log splitters - putting in the 'grenade' splitters into the logs to get them started
  • Log sorters
  • Log baggers
  • Log movers
  • Log shakers (ok, made this one up)
  • Goat petters

We certainly expended some energy and shed some timber on this task! It was great to be out in the night air, a great remedy to any splitting headaches...At times it was hard to see the wood from the trees, but in the end we were told we had made up 24 bags which was a great effort!

After finishing we made great use of the well lit traffic free hill outside for some hill reps in teams where we did 4 reps of:

40% 60% 80% 110% (as the Americans say)

We had a steady saunter back before stretching off and making birthday plans (see listings on website).

Until next time, happy running! :)

GG Sheff Fayreing well in the winter wetness wonderland

Monday 25th November 2019

Written by Tom Mutton

A HUGE GGSHF welcome to......

Carla Gibbons

Give her a cheer and support her by clicking on Carla's name above.

On a damp, dreary Sheffield eve our hardy lot donned their trainers and headed out to our old friends that we've not seen in a while over at Heeley City Farm. We ran and met with HAPPY HEATHER who welcomed us and gave us maps of tonights task which was to flyer the local area to let people know about the upcoming winter fayre (get the pun now?) this weekend which helps to raise funds to keep the farm running.

We split into 4 teams with TASK FORCE Team Captains -

  • Helen
  • Steve
  • Mike
  • Suze

After a good 30mins leafleting the surrounding streets we re grouped under shelter from the lethal drizzle and heard more about the upcoming events at the farm from Heather before saying our goodbyes.

On Goodbye we headed down the hill in style by all lunging forward, then backwards down the hill.

Think Monty Python meets Reservoir Dogs...

After a few tactical group circular squats to regroup we got back to base for stretches and liquid refreshment.

Until next time, happy running :)

"Manural Labour" down at the farm. Four bags good, two bags still good ;c)

Monday 29th April 2019

Proving once again that GGSheff ain't no party poo-pers, twenty-five GGSheffers made their way to Heeley City Farm last night to display maximum Goodness. We welcomed Cerowyn (referred to us by our old pal Shona), a new runner and also welcome back many recent joiners so it's good to see we haven't scared anyone off! After a quick debrief, an explanation of the running drills and count off, the team headed out on the 2km trip.

On the way out, we made sure to listen out for the whistle - one toot for fast feet, two toots for super slow running (just like Baywatch!) to practice our form and build core strength. We did squats at red lights and walked across the road in our best Emperor penguin impressions to build up some of our running muscles.

On arrival, Julie from Heeley City Farm met us at the entrance to explain our jobs. The farm had recently had to make a member of the team redundant so we took over some of the jobs that he would normally have done all on his own - bag up leaf mulch read for sale, move some manure and turn over another manure pile. The whole team worked really well together despite a few cramped spaces proving once again how much a group of good people can do in a short space of time. As we were all knee deep in the task it was suddenly time to start packing away and we left the farm neat and tidy, just as we'd found it.

After a few words from Julie, a photo with the big pig and a some hand scrubbing it was time to head back to base. In a change to the normal intense work out provided by Tom, we assembled on the green for a yoga practice showing the whole city our Downward Dog and Warrior poses before a good stretch off and round up of the week.

Thanks to Chris D and James for being solid back markers! See you next week :)

GoodGym x Earth Hour - Big Spon, little spoon, post it in the box...

Monday 25th March 2019

Written by Tom Mutton

A big GG welcome to first time GG'er;

Rois Muqsith

Give him a cheer and a follow.

We huddled together for a loving brief before setting off last night to an old friend that we hadn't been back to in a while of Heeley City Farm.

This community gem has sooooo much going on including the city farm itself with all it's animals, playgrounds, workshops and events that are so loved by the local community and visitors alike.

This week we helped Julie with leafleting around the area to promote the beer festival which will bring much needed funds into the farm to help keep it going and make the site sustainable for future generation to benefit and learn from all it offers. SENSATIONAL STEVE even came prepared with wooden spoons to save fingers from the dreaded letter box monsters!

What it offered us last night at the end of our rounds was a lovely steep hill, closed off to traffic which made for the perfect hill rep hill, so we partnered up with someone of a comparable pace and challenged each other with a 3 rep set up the hill in question. Everyone put in a great effort with some red faces and panting at the finish proving people had really put in a strong effort which was great to see. Hill reps are so good for developing fitness and although may not always be people first choice a great exercise which is much better practiced in pairs to stretch yourself!

On the way back we had some extra loops and link arm circle squats to ensure we all stayed together for the kids (any Blink fans....).

Until next time, happy running! :)

Ain't snow stopping us now!

Monday 2nd April 2018

Written by Tom Mutton

A big GG welcome to new member of the GG family;

Sally Wales

Woop, hola and give her a CHEER!

With DANGEROUS DAVE over from Manchester and kindly volunteering to be back marker using the websites brand spanking new way of volunteering to help out for a specific role he joined SENSATIONAL STEVE as back marker as we headed off via an alt route down Queens Rd as Bramall Lane was a wash with Blades on the way to a Bank Hol game.

On arrival at Heeley City Farm we were met by Julie and her little helper. Julie gave us flyers, a brief and some maps to head out with into the rain in small crack teams of 3/4 to spread word of the Heeley Spring Fair far and wide.

We had 40mins and were off to a flyer, legging it round the area getting as many postboxes filled as we could in the alloted time.

@GGSHEFF most definitely rained supreme on the night, battling the iffy weather on the roads to snowhere....

On return to our start point we took advantage of the hill before heading back by getting in some;

  • Lunges
  • Frog Leaps
  • Reverse Lunges

Finally we headed back along Bramall Lane where the road had been closed just for us, got stretched off and placed ourselves by the radiators to get dried off.

Until next time, happy running :)
