Run, Litter Picking and Foraging For Free Fruit

Monday 12th September 2022

Written by Annie Anthony Mays

Great run by all, litter picking and chatting to locals . On way back stopped at park with fruit trees. Foraged Fruit of Bullace, plums, various variety of apples. Fortunately James was tall enough to reach the Fruit trees and shake, shake, shake so that we women could pick the fallen fruit.

Ain’t no (Gleadless) valley high enough!!

Monday 8th August 2022

Written by Tom Mutton

8 AWESOME goodgymers came out last night to help INCREDIBLE IREN who consistently does an amazing job keeping her area of the city clean and tidy.

It was fantastic to welcome Ellie and Yvette who have both recently moved from other areas to the mighty Sheffield. Neither are new to GG having volunteered in other cities. Hope you both enjoyed it and will be back for more soon!

The Sun was shining and the weather was sweet yea! We moved our running feet up, up and away all the way to the Gleadless Valley via the Co-Op for Michelle to drop of some plastic recycling. The green theme continued with litter picking and brushing to tidy up a messy and glass ridden section of walking and cycling path that is used a lot as a link to/from the Gleadless Valley amenities from surrounding housing areas. We were thanked by path users as we filled up 11 bags and then tied them up and took them to the nearest AMEY bin for collection.

On route back we went via some of Celine’s old haunts and she pointed out her old flat and some of he numerous community planting endeavours she had lead on whilst living in the area. What an absolute ⭐️!

On return to base we stretched off and some grabbed an alfresco drink and chatted of Shindigs, fixing bikes and checking of passports!

Until next time, happy running :)

Get fit once, do good twice

Monday 6th June 2022

Written by Yvonne R

On a slightly muggy Sheffield evening, four runners set off for a slightly longer and hillier run than normal, to Gleadless Valley, to gives us extra time to catch up on everyone's adventures during the long weekend. We also had a quick break en route to give Michelle some time to recycle her plastics at co-op, showing us all how to do good twice on one run.

Once arrived, we met the fabulous Irene from the Gleadless Valley Litter Pickers who was already busy at work. We helped to fill a satisfying eight bags of litter between us and then manoeuvred them into the bin (action shots above!). Since the mission site was close to residential area, we hope that this will help improve the area for residents :)

The run back was thankfully much easier, being mostly downhill. Back at the Showroom, Tom rounded the evening off with some stretching and teaching us how to tie our laces in a runners knot. Our toes and shoes will thank you!

Here are some instructions for those who need a catch-up: 4 Ways to Tie Running Shoes

Windy bags at the bus stop

Monday 11th April 2022

Written by Tom Mutton

On a longer and hillier route than usual we were glad to once again meet up with the all time legend that is Irene Wadsworth.

Once we hit the peak of the hill on Gleadless valley top the wind was also peaking, filling our bags with wind, ready for the litter that we would fill them with. And oh was there a lot to go at, from chip forks, to wrappers, cans and even somethings that resembled brains, we picked it and bagged it!

At the end of the task a significant amount of litter had been bagged, ready for the council to take it away in the near future.

On route back we took advantage of some freshly mown grass to play some kids games where we got into groups of certain numbers and then did a different exercise each time with the reps being the number that was called. Great stuff!

Once back and stretched off we headed into the Showroom for hand washing and delicious delights!

Until next time, happy running! :)

Making Gleadless Gleaming!

Monday 9th August 2021

Written by Tom Mutton

This week we headed uphill into the rain to meet Iren of the Gleadless Valley Litter Pickers.

Irene met us with pickers, gloves and bags in hand and even a dustpan and brush and walked us to a particularly littered alleyway.

We got straight to work filling bags, sweeping up shards and grabbing fly tipped items.

We came across paint, cans, cigarette buts, the usual suspects. There was plenty to go out.

After collecting the bags together we left them ready for collection and said our goodbyes to Irene.

Gleaming Gleadless and Hygienic Heeley

Monday 12th July 2021

Written by Rachel (she/her)

Celine, Michelle and I met to run up the hill together pre-mission and collect a few Beat the Street points en route. As the segment says it "sure is Heeley"

We meet lovely Iren and 5 other Goodgymmers at Gleadless Medical Centre, to pick along a stretch of road which often gets missed as it's right on the edge of where Gleadless and Heeley litter pickers pick. Welcome in particular to Catherine who was joining us for her first good deed.

1 hour, 14 black bags, a tyre, umbrella and several pieces of wood later, the area looked a lot nicer. We posed with our haul and headed off most of us back down the hill towards home. Some of us collected a few more Beat boxes and admired the newly painted horse at Heeley People's Park
