Weeding the way!

Saturday 27th April

Written by Bromley runner

Linda and Nick met the Friends of Alexandra recreation ground for a spot of weeding. The challenge was to clear the weeds around the plant bed ready for some new flowers to be added for the upcoming Penge in bloom competition. After the weeding was complete we threw down a couple of barrows of mulch to keep the weeds at bay. A job well done โœ…

Green fingers for a Green Flag!

Saturday 13th April

Written by Ria

A very satisfying and motivational task down at Cator Park!

Marco, Amy, Angela, Linda and Ria spent time on a variety of tasks to help the park ready for its Green Flag assessment in May!

The willow arch was watered, bollards sanded and re-painted, a generator even got used and time was spent trying to remove the remnants of an arson attack from one of the benches.

Good gym once again showing many hands make light work and I think weโ€™d all love to see the park get the flag it so deserves!

Hitting the benchmark

Monday 8th April

Written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

Getting hench, drenched and edging to the bench, GoodGym Bromley smashed it this evening in pretty grim conditions.

Thankfully our jog was perfectly pleasant as we set off from the Bridge House. Today we made up for a lack of Easter session by naming our favourite eggs from fried quails eggs to Cadbury's creme.

We swung by Cator Park's freshly planted Tiny Forest and a beautiful surprise display of tulips and daffodils we installed on our way to meet Millie.

We split into two groups to tackle a couple of tasks:

๐Ÿ’ฆ Soaking the willow arch, with scooped up water from the river. Some new stems had been planted so water helps them bed in.

๐Ÿ’ช Edging the paths to widen them.

The rain came soon after we started and it got muddy pretty quick but we managed to get the willow arch watered and edging all the way to the bench.

Ace stuff.

Wheely well weeded saplings

Saturday 6th April

Written by Linda Gatley

So many weeds choking recently-planted saplings in Alexandra Recreation Groundโ€ฆ we pulled out 10 wheelbarrow loads of catchweed and bindweed, along a 50 metre length of the new hedgerow. The before and after photos show how badly this effort was needed! Now the saplings (there are 700 in total) can get the light and nutrients they need for their springtime growth spurt. We took care to leave as much alkanet as possible, as itโ€™s flowering at the moment so good for pollinators.

Oh my clod!

Monday 25th March

Written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

After naming ourselves and our current book we're reading (what a literary bunch!), we made our way down to Cator Park. We nabbed the keys from Millie and equipped ourselves with many shovels, a wheelbarrow and a brush to tidy up.

This has been our third in a series of sessions to widen the main path into the park. The mud and grass has been creeping over for years so we've been freeing almost a metre of path in some places ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Slicing and dicing gives you a proper good workout and thankfully we had Molly on barrowing duty picking up all our mud clods.

See pics for what a difference we had made - so much room!

Lovely stuff everyone ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ

You're gonna need a bigger barrow

Monday 4th March

Written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

Thanks James for the pun-spiration!

Last night 11 wonderful people met for a jog and a good deed in the dark in the park.

We met at the Bridge House, shared our top tips for warming up on a cold day and hit the pavement - a lovely downhill jog to Cator Park.

Armed with shovels, a brush and just one wheelbarrow, we set about widening a path which was being encroached on by grass and soil. There was a lot of scraping, some slicing and some shoveling to fill up the wheelbarrow before it got dumped by the hedges.

In the end we managed to free up a good metre in places and a serious chunk of the path completed โœ…

Top job/jog everyone! ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ
