After a brief warm-up at the heart of bustling Ealing Broadway, five GoodGymers set off for a sunny run to Acton. Among them: a guest from Barnet, Jacqui, who came to celebrate Steph's 1004th good deed with the Ealing team! We couldn't keep up with Steph's tasking pace, and hadn't managed to update the celebratory red-and-gold cape, so our Frenchman had to fly to Acton with merely a "1000" on his back!
The mighty cape turned out to have a mind of its own, and - maybe aware of incompatibility with the extra 4 good deeds - tried to fly away before the runners reached Ealing Common. Luckily, Sevan backmarked the group, while Conor and Kash obliviously pressed ahead, so no capes have been left behind.
The running team stopped opposite Acton Park (known to GoodGymers mostly as a junior parkrun location) to meet cyclist Maria and runner Harvey. The mission brief was simple: post flyers through houses' and flats' letter boxes to promote Movement on the Mount - a programme supporting women facing challenges accessing exercise, for example, women with low confidence, caring responsibilities, limited income, or from diverse cultural backgrounds. The execution of the task was less straightforward.
The seven leafleteers entered the so-called Acton's Bermuda Triangle: a treacherous area around Birkbeck Grove, Mansell Road and Beardsley Way, where GoodGymers had been lost in the past during flyering tasks, especially after splitting and venturing to a nearby estate. Having covered that part of Acton multiple times since then, our team learned how to navigate those streets - but this time it led to overconfidence as we ventured into forbidden postcodes!
"W4... Hmm, isn't this Chiswick?"
"The leaflet says the eligible attendees are women living in W3."
"Uh-oh!"
Feeling like outlaws, we scrambled to get out of the Hounslow Borough, trespassing on Southfield Recreation Ground - also mostly within W4. It was a nice extra run, though! The route took us back to W3, but we landed in a primarily industrial area and had to wander around looking for residential streets. Eventually, we finished off the leaflets and emerged back on the main road in Acton.
A short run via Uxbridge Road took us to ActOne Cinema - not for the movies, but for a pit stop at their lovely, quiet cafe to celebrate Steph's milestone. Having refilled ourselves with light refreshments (and a box of popcorn on the house), we ran back to Ealing Broadway.
Next week's Tuesday session is at Cultivate London's plant nursery at Popesfield Allotments to continue tidying up the space - sign up here to join us!

The GoodGymers who ran last night from Ealing Broadway to Acton were wet in seconds after leaving the covers of Spring Bridge Mews. True or false? False. They had been soaked long before meeting at the starting point.
Yes, that group run was certainly in the "wet one" category, and yes, the weather was less than ideal for a leafletting activity. Fortunately, shortly after Sevan, Steph, and Kash arrived in Acton and met Maria with an umbrella, the rain eased, and the four were able to kick off the task.
On behalf of Action West London, we've been walking around Acton to post flyers about another round of the Movement on the Mount, a free community exercise programme helping women overcome barriers to being active through weekly fitness sessions at St Mary’s Church Hall. The registrations for next Movement on the Mount were about to close in less than a week, so the deadline was tight to get the word out.
We hit the streets North of Springfield Gardens. Some were a good fit for the target audience (Essex Rd, Hereford Rd, Shalimar Gardens), others not so much (Creswick Road, Pierrepoint Rd, Lynton Rd, with big houses and flats with no outside postboxes).
By the end of the task, our leaflet envelopes were empty and our minds full of hope that women who may face challenges accessing exercise, such as low confidence, caring responsibilities, limited income, or their cultural background, will find their way to the Mount.
According to Steph's stats, each of us walked 3.33km during the task - that's halfway to beast mode, if you know what I mean!
Next week we're heading towards Northfields and Blondin Park for a run, a woodchipping task, and most importantly, hot chocolate! Sign up now!

The last 100+ leaflets informing about the upcoming free health & fitness sessions at St Mary's church for women of Acton didn't need a big team to finish off. I ventured West of Acton's Morrisons this time, covering Denehurst Gardens, Marble Close, and parts of Willcott Road and Gunnersbury Lane. The flyers batch has been finished, so hopefully we'll see good numbers of women wanting to look after their health and wellbeing storming the classes January!

This year, the Santa of Acton brought the ladies from the neighbourhood a special gift: an invitation to free fitness classes in January. And no, it wasn't a free month membership that gyms tease people with at the start of each year, but a 6-week programme for 40+ women who want to improve their health while enjoying themselves in a great company.
Santa's four elves: Maria, Sevan, Steph and Kash, took Father Christmas' sack full of leaflets and swooped across the night sky, dropping the flyers through chimneys in Acton's Mill Hill area. Hopefully, the ladies for whom the classes had been designed weren't away for Christmas, and if they were, hopefully the leaflets won't get lost in a sea of other ads before January!

The temperatures tonight might have scared off a few new GoodGymers, as out of eight signups, only five regulars showed up. Freya, Steph Ducat, Sevan and Kash ran from Ealing Broadway to Acton to meet Maria, who ran to the task straight from the gym - she is unstoppable! It would have been great if more ladies in Acton and neighbouring towns had so much motivation to stay fit and healthy! Well, that's what this Tuesday session was about!
Action West London asked us to help distribute flyers announcing the January edition of a free health & fitness programme for women. The sessions, this time including dance classes and pelvic floor exercises, will take place at St Mary’s Church Hall in Acton and give the residents an opportunity to stay active, healthy, and connected.
Before we ventured into the streets off Horn Lane, we congratulated Freya on her 50th good deed. She got to wear the GoodGym Ealing elegant black sash, marking the fantastic milestone, ahead of claiming the famed black GoodGym t-shirt. So far, Freya has been known as a dedicated Tuesday group runner and a Soup Kitchen supporter. Who knows what new, exciting sessions the future has for her! Well done, Freya, and onto the next fifty to claim your wings!
Throughout one hour, each of us walked about 3km, and the air became colder and colder. Having covered Rosemont Rd, Mayfield Rd, Creswick Rd, Julian Ave, Shalimar Gardens and Hereford Rd, we called it a day and ran back to Ealing Broadway to warm up again.
We will be back in Acton to further spread the word about the January sessions for women in three weeks - sign up now to join us!
Next week, we will run or walk to Walpole Park to replace woodchip on the paths in the Walled Garden. Shovelling and wheelbarrowing will be an excellent way to get active and stay warm! Join next week's session here!

On Sunday, 26th October, the clocks went back. According to the This Girl Can campaign, that night marks the time when almost three-quarters of women in the UK change how and when they get active outside out of fear about their safety.
To raise awareness about that gender activity gap and urge communities to change behaviours towards women that make them feel unsafe outside in the winter months, Let's Lift the Curfew movement, together with GoodGym and England Athletics, hosted over 320 events across the UK. One of them happened in Ealing!
We were looking forward to our group run, excited to see a fifty-fifty split between boys and girls in our sign-ups. Ultimately, we ended up with twice as many men as women, which might have been a stark illustration of the This Girl Can research, highlighting the barriers to getting active that women may experience outdoors after dark.
Undeterred by fewer than expected women showing up, we ran to Acton, 3 km each way, to find other ways to encourage women to stay active and healthy. We had 450 leaflets from Action West London, inviting Acton women to participate in free, inclusive fitness programmes: from strength and mobility classes for women aged 50+ to courses about strengthening the pelvic floor.
To distribute the leaflets promoting the events, we set off for a 3 km walk through Horn Lane and the streets East of it, occasionally astonished by hop-on hop-off buses cruising through nighttime Acton and slightly disappointed by the poor numbers of Halloween decorations. We managed to drop all the flyers through the letterboxes and are hoping that the initiative will help more local women discover opportunities to stay active, healthy, and connected.
Next week, we will slightly shift the theme of our group run and visit the Lammas Orchard a.k.a The Garden of Eden, where we will be clearing the spaces around mature fruit trees and more recently planted saplings, then mulching around them. Sign up now to join us!
