Goodgym returned to the lovely garden of the Phoenix Marsh trust to help out the wonderful Sue, whose professional gardening skills guided us to continue to help manage this garden. Leaves were swept, brambles trimmed back, and lots of weeding was done. A particular highlight was the gathering of ripe apples for the garden’s apple tree. There was a very large haul of apples which were enough for the Trust’s cook to have some to cook for the residents as well as Goodgymers to take some home. Hopefully some apple crumbles will be made by volunteers this evening!
Welcome to GoodGym Lewisham!
We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every Monday evening to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations in our area.
This week we will be helping out at Springbank Community Garden in Hither Green. There will be lots of tasks to get struck into including weeding, clearing bindweed, painting railings and planting, plus many more. There's always a lot to choose from!
GoodGym is for everyone! We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together, so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is. This weeks run is approx. 5km in total - don't forget we have the task in the middle to recover.
We meet at Glass Mill Leisure Centre at 6.45pm, so a short walk from Lewisham Station. We have access to lockers and changing facilities, so you could easily drop in on your way home (bring a pound coin or padlock if you want to use the lockers). Look out for the red t-shirts, we're very friendly!
In the latest of our recent visits to this impressive church in Hither Green, 6 GoodGymers arrived with one thing in mind; painting! Having been closed and used for nothing but spider homemaking for the past 18 months, St Swithun’s hall was ready for some sprucing via a fresh all-round coat of magnolia.
Our 6 began by applying masking tape to the floor and pillars that separated the sections of wall due for a good brushing before washing off the mix of dust, cobwebs and old confetti that adorned the adjacent window ledges.
Then out came the brushes as the team set about cutting in the edges, ensuring a neat job would be done. At last, it was time to grab those rollers and make a real difference! The large wall panels were efficiently covered before moving on to the few remaining fiddly bits to complete the job.
There was just time for a quick check around and cleaning up of any stray pain splatters (well, no-one’s perfect!) before the pallets and brushes were washed and a team photo was snapped as the sun came out and illuminated the hall’s smart new coat!
Taiwo completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Taiwo was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.
We're delighted to be able to help our friends at the Marsha Phoenix Trust again. This week we will continue the good work started in the garden on previous tasks.
- Make your own way to the task, at 90-92 Tressillian Road (a big house set slightly back from the road, with a bright red front door)
- Take direction from Sue, who will be leading volunteers through the session
- Please observe social distancing and wear a mask as you pass through the building
- Do not share tools
- Feel free to ask for a less physically heavy task if you would prefer something else, there's plenty to do, with something for everyone!
Taiwo is part of a crowd that's making a huge noise. Taiwo has been cheered by 25 people - that's a round of applause just on their own. We hope they keep it up.
Taiwo is a now a pretty committed GoodGym runner. They've just run to do good for the fifth time
