Pre - pearing the Edgeley Field Orchard

Tue 7 Sep
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

This Tuesday's group saw 5 GoodGymers helping the Edgeley Field Orchards to prune and prepare their trees ready for the cold winter months.

Ed, the man in the know, gave us a much needed and appreciated prep talk and educated us on the DDDC method to cutting back the plum trees. Damaged, Diseased, Dying and Crossed.

Then we were let loose to blast through the remaining trees which were left from a previous community session.

Rob and Pete even managed to stumble across a tree with mini plums, and happily munched away.

We were.lucky enough to have 'picked' (pun intended - of course!) the pearfect evening for the task and watched the sun set while eating Hannah's remaining Red Velvet cupcakes. The ones we salvaged from a passing dog anyway!

Maintaining the community orchards

About GoodGym

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects across the Stockport region.

The Task

The Edgeley Field Orchard is a beautiful community maintained plot of pear, apple and plum trees which is situated not far from Edgeley Park. Our task will be to pick and to prune the delicious crops, ready for a new season of growing.

The Run/Walk/Cycle

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

Our run will begin at 6pm on Tuesday 7th September from Life Leisure Avondale. We will navigate the 1.5km journey on foot to the orchard, taking it slowly on the inclines!

On arrival at the plot, we will pick and prune!

Toilet and parking facilities available at Life Leisure Avondale Bring gardening gloves and mask for indoor areas

Weed all about it...

Tue 17 Aug
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

After a 2.5km run, filled with peaks and troughs we arrived at our destination. In the heart of Stockport, perched on the busy A6, lay the majestic yet unkempt Wycliffe Congregational Church.

The church was littered with signs reading 'This is not an abandoned church, work in progress'.

Our 'work in progress' mission was to aid the church in cutting back their vast but overgrown jungle garden area, in the hope that a community garden could be created in the year to come.

We picked our tools and steadily battled the brambles, weeds and debris that filled the grounds. Branch by branch, we chopped and shifted until the jungle was no more.

After admiring the striking stained glass window, and munching through some biscuits, we headed back on our equally hilly return run back.

Heaton the run

Tue 3 Aug
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

Following a successful mission delivering the Cheadle Post community paper, the Heatons Post requested our running help to deliver their August edition.

We took advantage of the Stockport sunshine and followed a scenic route down the River Mersey, with our backpacks laden with papers and our bodies sweating with effort!

We concluded that there were definitely some ex paper girls/boys amongst us and complete the task in record delivering time!

Retreating back down the Mersey with lighter loads was a Tuesday treat!

Weed all love to bash some Balsam

Tue 27 Jul
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

Three GoodGymers narrowly escaped the Tuesday monsoon weather and ran 4.5 km to the beautiful Tudor gardens of Bramhall to help the Friends of Bramhall park to bash some Himalayan Balsam.

We were led into the depths of the valley forests and got a lesson in the brutal technique to bashing the Balsam.

Pull gently from the roots, snap before the first knob and then dash to one side.

A weirdly satisfying process!

So we pulled, snapped and dashed.

In no time at all, we cleared a large patch of Balsam before the torrential downpour hit.

Balsam Bashing at Bramhall

Tue 27 Jul 17:45 pm
Life Leisure Bramhall, Seal Rd, Bramhall, , Stockport, SK7 2JT
Clearing the pathways of our beautiful park to make it accessible for all

Who are we?

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects in our area.

The Task:

We will be joining some of the wonderful Friends Of Bramhall Park to help to clear away the pesky Balsam bushes from around Bramhall Park. During lockdown, the park has become over-run with Himalayan Balsam and it is spreading quicker than the Friends can bash it!

Himalayan Balsam

It is a non-native species that was taken from its natural home in the Western Himalayas and was brought to the UK in 1839 to look pretty in our gardens. It goes by the different names of Kiss-me-on-the-mountain, Indian Balsam and Policeman’s Helmet, amongst others, but is distinctive in its appearance, having pinkish flowers, oblong jagged-edged leaves and a pink tinged succulent stem.

The green seed pods are also quite unique, holding up to 16 seeds each, which they can fling up to 7 metres away when touched. One Himalayan Balsam plant is said to be able to spread 2,500 seeds alone!

The Run/walk/cycle:

Our run will begin at Life Leisure Bramhall at 5:45pm, ready for a warm up then run (walk or cycle) the mile to Bramhall Park.

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and it is often possible to walk to the task if you would prefer. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.
