The good deeds are PILING up

Lambeth Report written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

33 marvellous GoodGymers hit the pavements last night to run to Jubilee Primary School for a mystery task...

WOODEN you like to know!?

First we welcomed first timers Jen, Emma and Oscar to the gang and had a speedy warm up.

Steve lead a 4k route and the rest of us took the direct route to Jubilee where we were greeted by Juan. He had a big pile of wooden sticks/rods/planks hidden under a staircase which we awkwardly removed and took round to a shed - the kind of job we do so well!

So well that unfortunately by the time the splinter group had arrived, pretty much all the wood had been moved.

All that was left to do then was a serious HIIT sesh in the school hall. It was a hot one and everyone smashed it.

We then headed back for a well needed stretch.

Top work everyone!

Wooden it be nice...

...if you came along next week for some furniture removal at Brixton Road Youth Centre? You can sign up here.

Slinging In The Rain

Lambeth Report written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

19 absolute champs braved the weather for a night of chucking out and lucking out (with the weather - most of the time...).

We firstly welcomed Zoe, Laura and Emily to their first run with GoodGym, which it seemed was a blessed one, as the GoodGym gods/karma halted the rain for us to run to our task.

George lead the long run and Nicky lead the direct route. We had a few near misses with puddles/reckless drivers but the rain still held off...

We arrived at Brixton Road Youth Centre to be greeted by Sharon who showed us to the containers out the back as well as a big skip we had to fill.

Time to deploy the GoodGym conveyor belt.

Tim & Shauna and Nicky & David grabbed junk from the containers and passed it along the line to be chucked into the skip. This was stuff passed through generations of owners of the Youth Centre so there were some serious finds.

Highlights included:

  • Barack Obama
  • A large VHS collection
  • Spiders

When the skip was full, we bid farewell and hit the road, just in time for a spot of drizzle!

After a quick stretch we were treated by some phenomenal bakes:

  • David brought double helpings of fruit bread with butter and ROSE & STRAWBERRY jam!
  • Phil baked some delicious jam and custard tarts (NB: no soggy bottom)
  • and George provided a subLIME G&T cake.

"YUM" - all of us

Join us next week for more good deeds, good bakes and good running. We'll be at the Portico Gallery and Styles Gardens. For more details and to sign up, click here.

We're Lavender Tasks at Kennington Park!

Lambeth Report written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)

40 runners hit the road last night for all manner of gardening jobs and some litter picking at the delightful Kennington Park.

First off we welcomed new runners into the fold - cheers for coming along Lucy, Anna, Hannah and Louisa!!

And then we had some congratulations to give:
Steven has now smashed his 50th good deed and Michael is on a massive 100 good deeds!! They had the honour(???) of wearing the cape of goodwill and the wings of glory for their incredible contribution to the community.

Nice one guys!

And then we had to say goodbye 😢 Long-time Lambeth runner and ultra reliable taskforce member Lucy is back off to bonnie Scotland. She’d done 123 good deeds before last night, and has a group run streak of 39 months (3 years, 3 months and 3 days actually) which is just nuts. She will be so missed but we know when GG Edinburgh kicks off, she’ll be there!

Then we ran. Steve lead a 4k route and the rest of us had a direct 2.5k run. We were met by Rita and Mariette who instructed us with some pretty specific jobs.

Just a little bit off the top, please.

✂️ Snipping lavender

🌳 Trimming the big (yew) bushes

🚮 Litter pick off on the fringes

🌱 Up-ROOT-ing some ‘tree of hair-ven’ saplings

🌺 Getting the Wisteria out of one’s eyes

CHIP CHOP

We split into small groups to tackle each task and got to work.

There was some super even snipping from Lucy, Phoebe & Hannah and Freddie was hot on their tail, sweeping up the split ends.

Team litter pick was on fire: Tim found some old Country music CDs, Phil was picking up every cigarette butt he could possibly find and Magda, Frances & Marina collected 2 massive bags of rubbish between them.

After half an hour and a very important headcount, we left.

Shears m’dears!

And what a treat we had to look forward to from our Bake Off Sweet-stakes!

A perfectly moist orange and almond cake from Phoebe, a spectacularly colourful angel cake from Steve and an expertly executed antigravity cake from Samantha. 🍊👼🍎

YUM 👅

See you next week for a brand new task - painting and gardening at Loughborough Community Centre - and BISCUITS! Sign up here.
