Pastures new as five years pass for Goodgym barnet

Tue 24 Aug
Report written by Paul Salman

Seven GoodGym members came together to help Long Lane Pastures,a nature reserve in the middle of Finchley. We met up with the friends of the Pastures Donald, Wayne and Maureen. They asked us to help to clear the paths of weeds and to rake up the recently cut long grass. It was a beautiful evening as we started our work. To our surprise Donald had remembered that it was the anniversary of the formation of Goodgym Barnet and that we had visited on our first mission five years ago. They had generously arranged a birthday cake for us to consume at the end of our task. Much appreciated and let's hope we can continue to help them in the years ahead.

keey active and doing good!

Help look after a nature reserve.

Improve the environment

Long Lane Pasture is a 1.1 hectare nature reserve in Finchley in the London Borough of Barnet. It is owned by Barnet Council and managed by the Long Lane Pasture Trust. The council does not contribute any funds to the Trust. The trust relies on local volunteers and under a management plan agreed with the council, the site is managed to protect its wildlife value and maintain and enhance its biodiversity. There is access by a footpath from Long Lane immediately north of the North Circular Road. We may look to do a local run or group exercise.

Tiny Forest, Big litter pick

Tue 3 Aug
Report written by Daniel Mermelstein

A group of Barnet goodgymmers got together near Henlys Corner in North London, at the site of a proposed Tiny Forest, to be planted by the council and environmental charity Earthwatch.

A Tiny Forest is a dense and rapidly growing native woodland in a small area. It will provide a protected habitat for wildlife, capture carbon, filter the air of harmful particulates and reduce flooding and soil loss. You can find out more about the benefits of a Tiny Forest on the Earthwatch website.

This Barnet tiny forest is scheduled to be planted this winter. GoodGym is going to play a big part in this project by engaging the local community to help with planting, fencing, weeding and generally looking after this Tiny Forest over the coming years.

Our first support mission was a straightforward litter pick. We fanned out across the site and got to work, uncovering a treasure trove of trash!

It was a lovely, sunny summer evening and after the litter pick we did some exercise in the fading sun. The group got very excited about the Tiny Forest project. We are all looking forward to taking part in this exciting environmental initiative.

Environmental project preparation and visit to the Tiny Forest site.

Tue 3 Aug 19:00 pm
Finchley Road, London, NW11 6AH
Come to hear about how the Tiny Forest project is shaping up!

Barnet Council and Earthwatch are joining forces to plant a Tiny Forest in the borough and GoodGym are mobilising to help!

The project will need volunteers to plant the trees, build fences and look after it over the next year or two while it takes hold and develops. We hope that GoodGym members will be at the forefront of these efforts!

Planting is due to take place at the end of this year. In the run-up to that we are organising a few events to get familiar with the proposed site (off the North Circular, near Henlys Corner) and tell everyone more about Tiny Forests.

So please join us for a bit of litter picking and an information session. There will also be an optional Yoga/fitness session after for those who want to stay behind.

Gratifying to paint the Phoenix cinema

Tue 27 Jul
Report written by Paul Salman

Goodgym Barnet came together to help the Phoenix cinema save money removing graffiti from the building . It was touch and go with rain forecast right through the day but in the end the rain held off and the sun shone. We met with Owen, the duty manager, who provided all the materials for our work in removing the graffiti. Phoenix cinema is the oldest purpose-built cinema in the UK and it was a pleasure to help them in these difficult times. We finished in good time and were able to do a little fitness session and warm down. It was great to see some new joiners give them a cheer! Afterwards some of us enjoyed a drink on the balcony overlooking the cinema. It really is a special and historical building well worth visiting to see and enjoy one of its films. Thank you for doing some good, helping repair a historical building and important charity. We will be back to help again.

Painting the facade of the Phoenix Cinema.

Tue 27 Jul 19:00 pm
Phoenix Cinema, 52 High Road, London , N2 9PJ
Help reduce costs for this charity and improve its appeal.

Unfortunately the Phoenix cinema did not escape vandalism and graffiti during the pandemic. We have been asked if we can paint The facade of the Phoenix. They will supply all the equipment just bring your gloves dexterity and artistry. We might do a small warmup in cherry tree woods and may split the work force.

The Phoenix Cinema is an independent, not-for-profit cinema which is uniquely operated by a charitable trust on behalf of the people of North London.

Barnet Environmental Project Tiny Forest.

Helping to create new habitats for wildlife please register

Goodgym Barnet are looking to help develop several small protected plantings of trees through Barnet. ( A Micro Forest)

A Micro Forest is a dense and rapidly growing native woodland in a small area. It will provide a protected habitat for wildlife, capture carbon, filter the air of harmful particulates and reduce flooding and soil loss.

Besides these important local effects, it is symbolic of our need to protect our wider environment and it is hoped it will provide an education and emotional engagement of our community. It’s also something that we will have to physically nurture as a group. Its a great fit for Goodgym!

These initiatives are gaining popularity across the UK, with organisations like EarthWatch and The Conservation Volunteers getting involved.

The Council is interested in the project but we need as many people as possible to support the idea. For the moment please register your interest here and we will keep you up-to-date with what is happening as a rolling community mission. If you have ideas about how to promote this to the community please also get in touch. We want schools, community groups, artisans, news media and others to get involved.

Thanks to Daniel Mermelstein for introducing the idea to Goodgym Barnet.
