Site for Saw Eyes

Sun 16 Jan
Report written by David Mansfield

Martin, Paula, Jenny and David all joined forces with the Luton and Dunstable Conservation Volunteers to tackle some overgrown scrubland, removing overhanging branches and unwanted trees to let more light in and allow the adjacent grassland to expand, extending that habitat to a wider area.

Paths were cleared and trees were cut away to open the space up. Several bags of litter were removed as well, making this green space more accessible and opening up the view across Luton.

Winsdon Hill Conservation Day

Sun 16 Jan 10:00 am
Wellhouse Close, Luton, LU1 5SN
Improving our green spaces

Teaming up with the Luton and Dunstable Conservation Volunteers we'll be helping with some nature conservation in this wildlife hot-spot.

The grassland meadow needs protecting from invading trees so we'll be doing some scrub clearance to keep things open and grassy, so that wildflowers can thrive in the spring and support all the species that live in the area.

There will be activity here all day 10am-3pm so feel free to drop in whenever you can for as long as you can, but the main GoodGym effort will be in the morning session 10-12.

Hardcore Workout

Tue 2 Nov
Report written by David Mansfield

This week we visited a new task in the middle of our 8km run. Suitably for Halloween, we found ourselves digging in the dark with a view of the graveyard and accompanied by loads of large spiders! 🕷️

The garden area of the Trinity Community Centre had been neglected for several years but the current occupants, Training 4 U Services, are putting it back into use as a vegetable garden.

Martin, Jenny and Sam got started digging and found absolutely no soil in the first area, just chalk, so we relocated and tried again and found mostly sand, but turned it over to clear the grass and weeds.

The area was also littered with piles of fencing and heavy paving slabs so we cleared them up to make space for the garden works.

In the end we had created a bare patch that is a perfect blank canvas to build a veg patch on. Theres plenty more to do here so I'm sure we'll be back to help the continued development.

Creating a Community Centre Veg Patch

Tue 2 Nov 18:45 pm
St George's Square, Luton, LU1 2NG
Providing a space for home grown food

The Trinity Community Centre has a neglected garden that has fallen out of use and they'd like to make use of it once again.

There's lots to be done to reclaim this garden but the first job is to create a veg patch out of the overgrown lawn. We'll make quick work of it with a flurry of forks and spades, to get it ready for planting of some winter veg seeds.

Who You Gonna Call? Post Busters!

Tue 12 Oct
Report written by David Mansfield

A last minute replacement for our planned riverside task, we were tasked with helping Love Luton distribute road closure notices to a bunch of streets that will be affected by the upcoming half marathon.

We had a quick warm up and then started posting letters to all the businesses and residences around the town centre, jogging leapfrog style all the way up Park Street and back again all the way to St Georges Square.

A few hundred letters posted in under an hour, with a team effort, a bit of jogging and a few staircases, it's actually good fun and a welcome break from last weeks long distance run!

Riverside Cleanup at Manor Park

Improving Luton's valuable green spaces

The river through Manor park was recently re-naturalised from its former concrete banks. While nature gets itself re-established we're going to give it a guiding hand and remove the undesirable plants that have moved in under the instruction of Trevor the council's ecologist.

Expect nettles, long sleeves will be a good idea!

A Thistle Stop Tour

Tue 28 Sep
Report written by David Mansfield

This week six GoodGymmers assembled as the autumnal weather blew in the rain. We ran 3km up the hill to find out task, the 'Welcome to Luton' gravel sign.

The first thing you see as you enter South Luton from the M1, it was riddled with thistles and wasn't quite sending the best welcome message.

Despite being a prickly job we got it tidied up quickly as the rain arrived. With a clean, clear sign visible to passing cars and planes we ran away before the worst of the rain arrived!
