Don't Get Shirty With Me

Tue 19 Oct
Report written by Mark Gilyead

9 GoodGymers met for a delightfully mild October evening featuring bags, brownies and more bags.

If there was a Guinness world record for the number of times ‘bag’ was said within 30 minutes, I think we would have won.

We kicked off at Papa’s by sharing our favourite desserts (it was dessert week on bake off last week) and had a very varied selection. Sophie’s ‘chocolate apple Charlotte’ prompted the most intrigue.

Then we ran, finishing off with a nice up and down to get to St Faith’s Church Hall near North Dulwich.

We met doubting Andrea who questioned our ability to be able to sort through some big bags of clothes for Get Rid Of And Donate’s rough sleeper project. We were up for the challenge though.

We had a jacket bag, jumper bag, T-shirt bag, kids bag, ladies bag, shoe bag, accessories bag, trousers bag and the infamous naughty bag (for miscellaneous items) which we quickly filled, with some essential photographs of notable clothing along the way.

30 minutes past and we were done!

BAGS OF FUN

When we arrived back, Clare shared her Bake Off bake with us, some phenomenal vegan brownies. 😋😋😋

Sorting clothes for Get Rid Of & Donate

Tue 19 Oct 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Packing bags of essentials for rough sleepers

The fab GROAD (Get Rid Of & Donate) do really great work taking people's unused stuff and redistributing to people who need it, such as homeless people and refugees.

They've asked for our help sorting and bagging clothes, blankets and sleeping bags which they then distribute to rough sleepers (look out for a GoodGym Westminster listing on the 26th...)

We'll be inside so please bring a mask if you'd feel more comfortable. And we'll be running about 3km to St Faith's Church Hall, near Herne Hill.

New to GG Lambeth? We're a super friendly group who meet at Papa's Park near Brixton Station at 7pm on Tuesdays. We run to a local organisation, do a physical task for them and run back by 8:30. You can leave things in Papa's Cafe where there's a loo too! Email me if you've got any questions??

Raking leaves at Brixton Road Youth Centre

Tue 12 Oct 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
And bagging them up

The leaves have been falling again at Brixton Road Youth Centre, so we're going back for our regular job of sweeping them up and bagging them. Our record is about 30 bags - can we beat it!?

We then stick them on the kerbside so the council can take them and use them for compost! 👌

Brixton Windmill? Big fan.

Tue 28 Sep
Report written by Mark Gilyead

Ain’t no threat of rain putting off tonight’s do-gooders! (Though the lure of baked goods might have tempted some out…)

We had a lovely bunch tonight, including many a friendly face and a few new ones! Shout out to Chris, Jen, Hannah and Alice for joining their first Lambeth group run! You are so welcome 👍👍

Tonight’s task was at the awesome (and slightly terrifying in such dark conditions - see ghostly pic) Brixton Windmill where we met Jean who gave us a few tasks to be cracking on with:

🌱 Raking up the mown grass for the compost heap

🔪 (closest relevant emoji?) Edging the path to make it look nice

✂️ Trimming back the hedges on the outside fence and putting the branches in a sack

Fake it till you rake it

Although the clumps of grass were a struggle to find and our lights didn’t quite light up the path as desired (according to Chris), in 30 minutes we were done. And we had 2 bags of grass and branches to show for it as well as a neatly edged pathway.

Great work gang! 💥

Cookies and crème de la crème

We then had a brisk run down the hill back to Papa’s. After a quick stretch, Jen brought out the goodies;

Chocolate chip cookies with a dash of salt. A phenomenal start to our Bake-Off Sweet-stakes!!

See you next week for sanding and painting benches at Hillside Gardens and (fingers-crossed) round 2 of bakes! 🍰

Gardening @ Brixton Windmill

Tue 28 Sep 19:00 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Getting the gardens in shape for a event they have the next day

We're going back to the Windmill! And they have an event on the day after we're visiting so hopefully we can get the park looking nice for new visitors.

There may be some tasks in the Windmill to do but we'll mostly be outside, planting and weeding etc!

Please bring a mask & gardening gloves 🧤🤿🧤

It's a short run but we'll have a longer option if people fancy it!

Helping out at Papa's Park's clean up day!

Sun 26 Sep 10:30 am
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Make the space nice for the locals (and take home some quinces!?)

The wooonderful PAPA's Park are having a clean up day to get the park in shape.

There will be plenty of jobs to choose from:

🌱 Weeding

🌷 Planting

🎨 Painting the bench!!

🌳 Tree-picking (with quinces to take away!)

It all kicks off at 10:30am but you can stay as long or as little as you like. It'll be done by 12:30pm latest.

They let us host our group run there every week free of charge so it would be great if we could get a team down to say thanks!

Gardening @ Ruskin Park & Flyering for GROAD

Tue 3 Aug 19:00 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Group runs are back!

💥🥳🎉😬🙌🍻

That's right, the legendary GoodGym Lambeth group run is back!

Here's how it's going to work:

  1. Arrive at Papa's Park between 6:50 and 7pm. There is somewhere to leave bags and coats if you need to, but please be considerate of others when moving in and out of the room.

  2. We'll gather outside.

  3. After a quick intro and warm up, we'll split into groups to run to the tasks (there are always options for different paces & distances - no one gets left behind)

  4. We'll arrive at the task by 7:30, blitz the task and then run back to Papa's for an 8:30 finish. If there's time, we'll squeeze in a relaxed(ish) fitness sesh.

Sound good? We will have not one, but TWO task options for you.

1️⃣ Ruskin Park Community Garden encourage locals to help reduce their carbon footprint by learning to grow veg in this lovely leafy part of Ruskin Park. They're always asking for our help with sifting out good compost, cutting back the bushes and of course a bit of weeding! They even sometimes give us freebies for our help... 🧅🥬 This is a roughly 2km run each way.

2️⃣ Get Rid Of And Donate do awesome work taking people's unused stuff and getting it to people who need it. Kitchenware might go to newly settled refugees, big coats might go to rough sleepers and toys might go to local vulnerable families. To do this, they have to get the word out and flyering is how we go about that. It'll be a 3km run each way, plus running/walking around the houses.

🧤🧤Please bring gardening gloves, unless you fancy the longer run.

Any questions? Drop me an email.
