Shopping in the rain

Report written by Gosia Rybacka

Oh blimey, what a heavy rain in Kingston today! Gosia - who was smart enough to take an umbrella โ˜” - was helping Ms T with some essential grocery shopping ๐Ÿ›.

Ms T welcomed me very warmly on the phone. It felt especially nice very nice after being soaked by the cold rain right before ๐Ÿฅถ. Ms T was incredibly nice, prepared upfront and put everything on her doorstep - two bags, the shopping list and ยฃ20 in a small foil bag. I grabbed all from there and rushed into the shopping area.

It was a great surprise ๐ŸŽ and very heartwarming โ™ฅ๏ธ to see a little "Thank you Gossier" not at the top of the list. I was lucky as there was almost no queues today in all three shops I went to (maybe the rain scare few shoppers of) and managed to get everything Ms T wanted.

After around 40 mins I was back at Ms T's flat. I put everything on the doorstep (groceries, receipts and change), stepped away and gave her a quick call โ˜Ž๏ธ. I waited in distance for a little while, just to see that she has managed to pick her shopping up. She thanked me at the door and also sent a short text "Thank you sweet thing." This immediately warmed my heart ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

Shopping Bags Bunny

Today, Gosia helped Mr G - who lives in Kingston upon Thames area - with his essential grocery shopping ๐Ÿ›.

As I preferred to do shopping before arriving at Mr G's house I gave him a quick call โ˜Ž๏ธ. I checked with him if the list provided in the mission description was still accurate. It was ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ˜Š. I had everything I need โœ….

I went to Sainsbury's, the queue ๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธwas very long though it was worth waiting as I managed to get everything from the list.

I left the bags on Mr G's doorstep and exchanged the cash through an envelope โœ‰, remembering about keeping a distance.

It was quite a long walk from where I live though it was worth the effort. I reminded myself how good it feels to be here for others and be able to show them kindness โค.

Helping Hand

Report written by Gosia Rybacka

What a lovely sunny day today ๐Ÿ˜Š. Gosia has spread some GoodGym magic today in Kingston upon Thames by helping Ms A today with some essential grocery shopping.

I was a bit earlier in the area, so gave Ms A a quick call to confirm if this is OK to meet few minutes before 9 am. She said that she is ready with her shopping list and can give it to me anytime. Perfect! Ms A has problem with walking so it took a while for her to open the door ๐Ÿšช and leave her shopping list on the doorstep.

I picked up the list and run to the shopping area to find two stores that she specifically mentioned - Iceland and Drugstore. I have managed to find and purchase all requested products, picked up the receipts and put them in the shopping bag.

I walked back to Ms A's address and left all the bags on the doorstep. Then, I gave her a quick call letting her know that everything is ready to be picked up. She thanked me for the help and confirmed that she would like to send the money via bank transfer.

Guildhall, Kingston-upon-Thames, London, KT1 1EU
Keeping stock levels up at Kingston food bank for those in need

Kingston foodbank have seen a dip in donations and as stock has been in greater demand the need to keep stock topped up is more important than ever. To help ensure Kington's most vulnerable residents are supported during this time please help by asking for donations from your local neighbourhood whilst following the social distancing rules. Goodgym members have been placing a box outside their homes or communal areas for residents to add donations to, this will then be collected and taken to the Foodbank. For tips on what to donate please see the website https://kingston.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-food/ All donations will be collected by one Kingston Goodgym member by the week of the 20 April and drop all off to the Foodbank.

Where is Welly?

Report written by Gosia Rybacka

Today we represented GoodGym on the one of regular community conservation volunteer days organized by Friends of Berrylands Nature Reserve. We have arrived outside Berrylands Scouts Hut at 10 AM โฐ, when the event was kicking off with a short introduction. We heard a bit more about the todayโ€™s tasks but it was especially inspiring ๐Ÿคฉ to hear about all amazing things they have already done in the nature reserve ๐ŸŒฑ.

Super energized by intro and todayโ€™s sun ๐ŸŒž, we grabbed three wheelbarrows full of equipment โœ‚๏ธ ๐Ÿงค and headed off all together into the nature reserve. It quickly turned out that the site was really muddy ๐Ÿ‘ฃ at the moment after recent rains ๐ŸŒง, so both of us looked at our trainers and felt deep regret ๐Ÿฅบ about not taking a bit more suitable footwear for the conditions โ€“ wellies would be just perfect ๐Ÿ‘Œ!

Our main task for the day was to start work on a dead hedge. Itโ€™s essentially a barrier constructed from cut branches and saplings. Itโ€™s good for wildlife - especially for small mammals ๐Ÿฟ, birds ๐Ÿฆ and insects ๐Ÿฆ—๐Ÿž - because it gives them somewhere to shelter that is protected from predators and from the wind and rain.

Before getting to the area where this hedge should be built, the Friends showed us a similar construction completed in a different part of the reserve. The group split in two, with one working on evening out and clearing the area, the second cutting and shaping the branches for the hedge.

We immediately joined the second bunch, our task was to ensure that the branches that go into the ground will have a relatively same length ๐Ÿ“ and also that their endings will be spiky ๐Ÿน so it will be easy to stick them to the ground. We grabbed saws and get on with the work. There was a lot of material to process, so this is how we spent most of our time!

After around an hour, we were asked to go to a different part of the reserve to transport ๐Ÿ— the second pile of branches that was collected by Friends some other time. Now we could make a good use of it โœ…!

After around 2.5h we went back to the hut to wash our hands (Happy Birthday ๐Ÿฎ sung x2) to prepare ourselves for biscuits ๐Ÿช and warm drinks โ˜•.

We havenโ€™t stayed until the end but long enough (2.5h) to see a nice progress the group made. As they said before we started โ€“ building a dead hedge takes surprisingly long time so the task wouldnโ€™t be finished today and the work will continue! Our trainers were crying for wash. Not-welly planned ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ!
