Cyclists wanted! Ringcross Community Centre Foodbank

Fri 4 Jun

Ringcross Community Centre has been operating a large foodbank since the start of lockdown, and currently offers food and essentials to over 70 Islington households every week.

Islington Cycle Club have also offered assistance to the project, by arranging a food collection pickup from shops and supermarkets, often using a cargo e-bike.

Goodgym have offered to assist with delivering shopping parcels to various households around Islington (no more than 2 miles from the community centre).

Would you like to be a foodbank cycle courier?

All deliveries will be prepared in advance, with addresses and contact phone numbers attached to the parcels.

You will need:

A bike

A method for carrying pretty heavy stuff

This can be pannier bags, or a large rucksack (12 ltrs or larger). Most deliveries would be the size of 4 shopping bags of items, so a larger capacity bag will make your trip easier. A few spare bags will be available to borrow if required.

There are 3 large bags available to borrow if you are without a suitable rucksack!

Some sort of map

Google maps on your phone would be fine.

Confidence when cycling on London streets

We are looking for safe cyclists! Steady, controlled and predictable cycling is preferred over speedy deliveries!

Any questions, feel free to contact Simon Fitzmaurice (Islington Trainer).

Track Attack: The Bank Holiday Special

Sat 29 May
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

We were treated to some beautiful summer sunshine for our monthly "Track Attack" time trial event- an all-abilities social run at Victoria Park track. It is wonderful to see so many Goodgymmers from all different boroughs come together to run (we had folks from Redbridge, Islington, Camden, Tower Hamlets and Wandsworth this morning). We even had Daniel unexpectedly join us while he was on his morning long run (the promotional power of the red t-shirts should not be underestimated!).

Two distances on offer for this event: 1 mile (4 laps of the track), and 5km (12.5 laps of the track). We also had a top cheer squad on hand in the form of Linda, John, Tracey and baby Mali.

Thank you to Tracey, John, Stephen and Jacqui for helping with time keeping, lap counting and photography today.

Top class running today, even through the muggy airless climate. We always finish up with a coffee and breakfast at The Park Cafe too.

Shower Power (CREOS May)

Sun 16 May
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

6 Goodgymmers joined Glenys and the team at Crouch End Open Space on an unpredictable Sunday of spring showers and sunshine. We got to work straight away, with gathering wheel barrows, shovels and rakes from a neighbourhood garden shed (with permission of course!).

Within an hour, we successfully spread almost 200 meters of woodchip along the forest paths, connecting the Hanley Cricket and Tennis Club to the main meadow on the way to Highgate. We received lots of praise from local runners, families and dog walkers for our efforts over the last few months.

Excellent job everyone- We will be back again next month!

Our good weed for the day

Sat 15 May
Report written by John Shirley

A super sextet headed over to Highbury Quadrant to continue the good work we've carried out over many months on behalf of the redoubtable Fran. It was an early start but even Sam nearly made it on time. Paul and John renewed acquaintances, having been inseparable GoodGymers at one time. Eilidh travelled only a short distance, while Katriona came from Scotland - though not today. Beth arrived full of joy following her recent race success.

First we had to move some bags of soil by wheelbarrow, from the wall plot to another area. We knew they'd be heavy, because it was GoodGym who'd carted them to the wall plot when they first arrived. That part of the task was soon done and we then spread the soil out and levelled it.

We also spread some black sheeting over another bed to deny the weeds any sunshine, while other weeds were tugged out by the now-experienced hands of GoodGymers. Beth found a bone, though it might not have been human.

Having inadvertently continued over our allotted time, we returned the tools, said "au revoir" to Fran and headed off in different directions with most of our Saturday still ahead of us.

Crouch End Open Space (CREOS) Volunteering Day (May 2021)

Sun 16 May 11:00 am
Hanley tennis club car park, Greenways, Shepard's Path, off Park Road, London, N8 8JJ
Our monthly woodland regeneration session with the CREOS volunteering team

Join us as we help the team at CREOS, a local conservation charity, maintain and improve a lovely green oasis in Crouch End.

CREOS looks after the meadows and wooded pathways of the Crouch End Open Space. GoodGym runners have been helping them maintain this beautiful patch of land for a while now, and the CREOS team always has lots for us to do.

We'll meet for an 11am start and aim to work for two hours. Stay as long as you can... but if you can make it to 1pm you'll get to enjoy a picnic* provided by the CREOS team. (Though this may be contingent on the weather!)
