Pond Life

Haringey Report written by Pennie Varvarides

I go out when I want except on Wednesdays when I go running to pull weeds and plant bulbs (Pondlife)

This week we had 16 GoodGym-ers show up to help on our longest run in AGES! I don't know if that means everybody loves a long run or just that everybody wanted to help make sure we got enough done in our shorter task time.

Either way, you're all wonderful!

We were joined by GG newbiew Dominic, who hadn't run for years but was still super speedy.

Seeing as the run was real long, we split into two teams: the speedy lot and the party pacers, with Julie leading the party group and me leader the others.

Thanks to my medium sense of direction and Niamh helping out with her own medium sense of direction, we did an extra half a kilometer or so (including the biggest hill) and arrived at the same time as the other group anyway. Luckily on the way home Rhiannon directed us a way that didn't mean we had to go back up the massive hill we came down to get to the park entrance!

At the task we were greeted by three volunteers, already hard at work. Our task was to pull out all the weeds and take them to the compost round the side. We only had 15 minutes, but with 16 pairs of hands, we still blitzed it. The Friends of Stationers Park will be planting some new bulbs and bringing the pond back to life.

The volunteers told us it would have taken them a couple of weeks to get as much done on their own.

Everybody did so good!

Next week will be my last ever run, so I hope you can make it!

Show me a sign

Haringey Report written by Pennie Varvarides

This week 14 epic GoodGym-ers ran 5km to help Westbury Banks Nature Reserve hang their new sign

We were joined by FOUR NEWBIES, making last night's run the biggest so far this year (think). Go give Veronika, Freya, Alex and Ella a cheer!

We started off with warm up drills to gey the legs ready for the running, followed by the Burpee Name Game, to get everybody's brains and hearts working.

We then headed off towards Westbury Banks Nature Reserve. Julie was our trusty back-marker, while i lead the way with Rhiannon and Nurjehan.

We had a wall sit on the corner to give the back marker a chance to catch the front, much to the amusement of the local residents. One boy even joined us for a wall sit, but drew the line at running with us (by running away from us).

We took the scenic route last night through the park, detouring through some trees and steps to add a nice little change from the road side.

A quick run back to keep the group together and we were off again through the next park and down the hill.

When we got to Westbury, Luke and the gang were waiting with all the letters.

The first part of our task was a novel one: take photos holding each letter so Luke could create a gif.

Part two was to hang the letters up.

We had 30 minutes to take all the photos and hang all the letters. Ro said it took them 4 hours to hang the letters last time - definitely didn't take that long with 14 people!

The team split in half, with someone inside the fence and someone outside the fence, working as a team to hold and hang the letters.

We then took many photos, said our goodbyes and ran to Lordship Rec for some sprint work and Burpees.

We then ran home, including a sprint back up the hill, and another detour through the park. Dave was our trusty back marker on the way home.

Back at base, we stretched, we breathed, we high fived.

Really awesome task last night. Thanks so much guys.

Dig a little deeper

Haringey Report written by Pennie Varvarides

This week 10 GoodGym-ers ran 6km to help fill a planter outside a local library, so volunteers can grow edible plants

We were joined by two newbies: Charlie and Adam - give them a cheer!

We started with some warm ups in front of base, including the burpee name game and some bunny hops

Sarah was our trusty back-marker, while Dave lead the way, taking up an almost totally new route to Quernmore Road

He even took us up the biggest possible hill!

GG tourist Patrick met us at the library as he was running a bit late.

The team quickly split into teams of shovellers, tippers and sweepers.

There are a couple of great boomerangs in my instagram stories if you're interested.

Within 20 minutes we had filled the planter and made friends with a local who wanted us to help with a nearby pond!

It was soon time to run back to base. Niamh helped me navigate to Chestnuts Park for a game of Peliton (although I'm not sure that's the right name).

We then ran home, making it back to base with 30s to spare! Win!

Short run next week to the Living Under One Sun community center to clear leaves - 1km each way. See you then!

Working out with Chi-p wood

Haringey Report written by Chi Nwa

Last night’s tasks had 11 of us going on a short adventure towards Cheshnut Park to help our friends make the Garden space more inviting.

News

Team Haringey are heading towards Burges park to do a park run this Saturday. Feel free to come and join.

We are looking to build a big Haringey Team for the Olympics. Click here for more info and to sign up

The Spartan Race is in 2 weeks, so anyone interested in doing a different kind of race sign up here

I want to give a big welcome to out first timers Amelia, Nina, Freya, Shanni and Ronnit. Hope the session fulfilled your expectations.

After a nice warm welcome to our new members, we headed towards the green for a warm up to get the body ready for the evening activities. While we were warming up, I decided to get everyone to say their names, number in ascending order and let the group know what their favourite drink is. I was expecting everyone to pick drinks kin to Ribena or Lucazade, all that my ears were hearing was cocktails and wine with one mention of a fruit juice. With Dave as back marker, we shot of down the road to Cheshunt park stopping mid journey to do a wall sit while we waiting for the runners at the back.

At the park, we had a mixture of Jobs. Litter picking Moving logs Shovelling wood chips Carrying the wood chips in the wheelbarrow Spreading the wood chips on the path Spreading the mulch on the plants

The group got split into 3 groups with everyone taking turns on trying a different task. Natasha turned the task into a workout by filling up the wheelbarrows and running with it between the 2 destinations. Rita was injured but with a “Never give up” attitude, she was determined to be useful and helped pick up the litter and spread the mulch all with one hand across the plants with a little help from Ronit. Nina, Freya and Dave picked up the mantle of spreading the wood chip throughout the path and inside the hut with the sun roof. Marusha and Kipil stood watch over the woodchip and would shovel them onto the wheelbarrows for Shanni and Natasha to carry them over to the path and Hut. Then to make the work go faster, Amelia and Latoya would help Shovel the mulch on to the wheelbarrows but they also would carry the mulch on the spade to the Hut and path too (Top Heroes).

The task got finished around 7.55pm and the difference could really been seen. With the early finish of the task, this meant there was time for a Chi workout and a time trial. The workout lasted around 10 mins. The moaning meant they were doing the exercise properly. We engaged arms, legs and core with little time to rest. Rita got the hall pass from me to go and use the park gym equipment due to her injury. The task got ended with a time trial. It was not a race but a marker to see how fit someone is going with everyone’s timing going lower and lower.

These are the times: KG 3.00 RP 3.11 DM 3.22 Rita 3.27 ST 3.52 NC 5.05 FJ 5.07 NT 5.08 LS 5.20 AH 5.27

Well done for taken part everyone, hopefully next time we can improve on our times. Feel free to add the Whats App group which is on the e-mail and go on runs with other members of Goodgym Haringey.
