Football or Food-Haul?

Bristol Report written by Shona Buchanan

The divisive Tuesday night question: England's match in the knock out stages of the World Cup, or bagging a Good Deed with GoodGym? While a few red tee's strayed to the bar (and kept us updated with regular commentary of the match, thanks Darren), the rest of us prepped our helpful legs of a night of dodging England fans while running to do good. It was great to meet Anna, Alexandra and Alice as they joined us for their first run with GoodGym - welcome!

After the group warmed up with a very simple (ahem) game of GoodGym's very own Ship Sea Shore (the catchy Park, Food Bank, School, of course...), we split into two groups.

Group 1: A sign of the times

Dave did a wonderful job as group leader and chief cameraman (and pun maker) of the GoodGymers who were going to help Up Our Street with a challenging task. They had a big chalkboard which was at the side of the Bristol-Bath cycle path, but they wanted to give it to another of our tasks, the Felix Road Playground. Little did we know when we arranged for the group to come and do this, that several weeks of hot, dry weather would make the task a whole lot harder as the ground was so solid. But the crew did not give up and they shovelled and shoogled until the sign was loose. The Pink Panther then acted as a great supervisor watching the group carefully get the sign to the right place. All in all, a job very well done!

Group 2: Lifting us up

Meanwhile, the rest of us went back to our favourite Bristol storage unit to help East Bristol Food Bank sort their food donations ready to be made into food parcels for local people in need. As our normal guide Andy was tied up being loyal to Engand, we met Sally from the Food Bank team who was showing us the way. All our practice has been paying off and we managed to get the crates sorted and back in storage in no time! We are yet to finalise whether our speed of sorting or the number of people we fit in the lift was record-breaking, but we believe they both were!

Mel did a much better job than me of leading her group home from the Food Bank while catching Gromits (getting ready for Sunday's Gromit Run) - even managing to sneak one in the Marriott!

All of this was topped off by our monthly GoodGym Eats, this month at Turtle Bay. Thanks to Liam for organising - we had a relaxing or nail-biting experience depending on whether you were tucking into the 2-4-1 cocktails or tuning into Darren's continued football commentary.

Two tasks complete, a lovely meal eaten and a night well-spent!

Goat-al Eclipse of the Heart

Bristol Report written by Shona Buchanan

It was another big old Good Deed filled evening at GoodGym Bristol. A massive 53 runners came along to lend their hands to the good causes of Bristol. 53! You bed-der believe it. That is the Bristol record if you don't include medical students... A massive welcome and thank you to all of the new runners this evening, you were all absolutely brilliant!

Anyway, to the tales of an eve well spent. We got the bodies belonging to those helpful hands warmed up with some good old 'Shona says'. It's just like that fun game of Simon Says, but it involves burpees - so it's even more fun, right? Sofar, so good. The group then split into its three hefty sub-groups...

Got to Mala-go to the maze

Paul led a group out on a 6km run to Malago Maze, where we helped Jackie to do a massive amount of weeding to spruce the maze back into shape. The group did a fantastic job, and worked very hard to get a lot done in the time plus do the run there and back - brilliant work everyone!

It's goat to be perfect

Chris did a fabulous job of taking the second group to Bramble Hill Farm to also get stuck in with the weeds giving it a good prep-up for summer. These lucky do-gooders had an extra treat of getting to meet the goats and the pigs of the farm (and potentially spending more time getting the perfect selfie than weeding? (Not mentioning any names, Matt...)

The tables have turned

Meanwhile, the rest of the group went to help the British Heart Foundation team to set up their new store in the middle of Bristol. The team got stuck in with moving furniture, sorting books and pulling down window stickers (and managed to cajole some innocent bystanders into it too - thanks John the window-cleaner). The time flew by and we are looking forward to coming back for Part 2 in a couple of weeks' time.

After all that, everyone chair-ished a good sit down, and what better way to do it than with our June Monthly Eats at Bambalan. Flat breads and beer later, we'd sure forgotten about the squat pain. Thank you Clo for organising this!

To be honest, I've got to get a load off my chest - this run report may or may not have been written with the aim of including numerous furniture puns. Just in case they aren't quite good enough to notice, I have handily highlighted them so you can really appreciate that I am just sofa-nny.

Weed have thought of a better pun if we weren't Bugged

Bristol Report written by Shona Buchanan

It was another big group attendance tonight as our Bristol runners spread out across Bedminster to fix up some green spaces. Welcome to the new faces that joined us tonight - it was great to see you Anna, Beth, Cristina, Aga and Abigail! Also good to see some new but returning faces - good luck for the big one this weekend Stu!

Thanks to Charlie, who led the first group to Cherry Tree Garden. There, they were met by Julia who explained to them the momentous task of weeding and clearing nettles ahead of the bulb-planting they are planning in the future. After a slight delay followed by being rescued by the henceforth-named Glove Superman, Darren, the group were ready to enthusiastically set to work. Apparently, Chris decided to get in a fight with a Sycamore (as you do on a Tuesday night with GoodGym), while the rest of the group picked on something their size... Or at least, a whole lot of nettles slightly closer to their own size.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group met Laura from Bedminster Patchwork. They manage 12 patches of land across Bedminster, which they work on to make beautiful spaces for the local community. GoodGym had previously worked on this particular patch a couple of times and it is coming on leaps and bounds. The group set to work weeding and planting across the ground. Despite hitting a spider nest and finding surely the entire population of Bristol's hairy caterpillars, the group did a stellar job of making the patch weedless and freshly planted ready for summer. What a great job all round. Thank you to your brilliant back-marking Maria, which got us past all the envy-inducing pint-holding locals sipping in the evening sun, until we could get back for our own well-deserved pints.

Overall, a Tuesday night well spent, and Bedminster looking all the better for our green-fingered GoodGymers!
