Knee deep in….Stepney City Farm compost

I realised when Tom was asking for a volunteer for the run report, I had actually volunteered at the last run, however I had conveniently forgotten and never written anything! Racked with guilt I offered to make up for the mishap and do the report this week instead, so here goes....

Following the heroic efforts of many GG runners in at the Hackney half on Monday we were thinner on the ground than normal, although a big shout out to Andy and Tom who ran the half on Sunday and still made it along!

But it’s not all about quantity…there was a lot of quality amongst the group and together we took a gentle pace to Stepney City Farm, a regular haunt for GG Tower Hamlets. We were split into 3 groups; people who wanted to take it easy, people with middling energy and people who were feeling extra energetic – the last group only required 4 people and was not overwhelmed with volunteers!!

So we split into our groups and got going with our 3 different tasks which were all compost related; moving compost from one side of the farm to the other, bagging up compost ready for the farm to sell and turning over compost. We smashed through the task like an ant colony and Tom made a fantastic queen!

After we had done about 40mins at the farm, Tom dragged us away from the animals so he could take us to Mile End Pak for some hill sprints. Unfortunately we only had time for 3 reps, but we were spurred on by an inebriated local who played a fiddle and shouted slurs of encouragement as he watched us ‘sprint’ up the hill and back down again repeatedly.
Before we knew it, we were back at base and stretching - time flies when you’re having fun with your GG buddies….
