Report written by Imy Hopkins
It was a lovely sunny day in Cardiff and everyone enjoyed their walks, runs or cycle to get to Stargalot allotments. We were welcomed warmly by Camilla who explained the tasks that needed doing, which were also helpfully written on a blackboard under the words "Fabulous Goodgym"
Martin was leading the community mission and had a very relaxed leadership style letting people choose which task they fancied doing. The main criteria for people seemed to be the task that would involve less red ants (for future reference - weeding around fruit trees is not the one you want to pick 😂)
Pete and Flo helpfully worked on moving compost. While Martin got to start moving things in a wheelbarrow. Sean, Imy and Laura started weeding around the trees and making a circle around them, where ornamental bark will be places. In a few years they'll be lots of pears, cherries, plums and even a welsh variety of apple that should taste great in a crumble.
After over an hour of busy gardening, the tasks were complete. When asked for a quote of what he'd completed, Martin very detailedly said "moving stuff" and didn't comment further. Regardless, our efforts were really appreciate by Camilla and we were provided with some refreshing drinks and some snacks too! I'm sure Goodgym will be back to help out again at Stargalot soon.
Stargarallot Community Garden was created in 2018 by local residents as a community garden network covering the STAR area of Cardiff.
