The Crossness Engines Trust
The Crossness Engines Trust was set up in 1987 to restore the engines at Crossness Pumping Station, a unique part of Britain's industrial heritage and an outstanding example of Victorian engineering. Much of the restoration work completed so far has been by a team of dedicated volunteers. As well as restoration the Trust runs public open days and offers visits for schools.

Crossness Pumping Station is an historic Victorian sewage pumping station, built in the 1860s as part of Joseph Bazalgette’s revolutionary sewer system to improve public health in London.

Today, it is a restored industrial heritage site and museum, famous for its ornate cast-iron architecture and impressive steam-powered machinery.

The task

We've been asked to go along to help their regular team of volunteers in the garden - cutting back weeds, replanting, and other tasks around the grounds.

We'll work for around an hour followed by tea and biscuits, then an exclusive tour to see the magnificent beam engine house, normally only open on special event days for an entry fee.

Please bring gardening gloves. All other equipment and tools will be provided.

📍When and where

Meet at 10.30am at the entrance gate in Bazalgette Way, Abbey Wood SE2 9AQ, What3words: charmingly.cure.tone.

If you are planning to drive, there is parking onsite - please leave a message in the comments below so we can tell the onsite team to expect you.
