Battersea Park contains Wandsworth Borough’s only Local Nature Reserve. This means the area is protected for its local importance for wildlife and nature. It comprises of a ‘wild’ woodland and a meadow area. Unfortunately the quality of this habitat for nature has declined. In an effort to turn this around, the Enable Parks team is starting with meadow improvements. This woodland glade meadow offers long grass, wildflowers and a sheltered space for insects and birds to sun themselves and forage. Wildflowers and grasses provide food plants and habitat for insects and other invertebrates, which in turn feed birds and larger invertebrates. The more diverse the plant species are, the larger variety of insects and invertebrates it attracts, so the greater host of animals that can feed, and so on!

The meadow was overseeded in Spring 2026 with a native wildflower seed mix. We have been asked to help carry out selective hand weeding during the summer on more dominant species populations and survey what is there by making a species list.

This 'Meadow Maintenance' task in an amazing opportunity to get to know a hidden area of the park, help keep the biodiversity diverse and create a richer habitat. We're going to be tackling the common nettle, spear thistle, creeping thistle, broad-leaved dock, curled dock, and common ragwort.
