This week saw 15 GoodGym-ers taking on one of our longest non-stop runs to date in Barnet – 8km – to help our fabulous hosts deliver flyers across Finchley.

We started with congratulations for our mighty GG Olympians who came home with a medal, a war woud or two and the odd tan line. Freya wore the Barnet Flag with honour tonight. There's a write up of the events at the end!

We started with a 3km run up to North Finchley, where Joanna reminded us all of the importance of watching out for cars turning into roads. We then ran 1km towards Finchley Central, where we paused to split into teams. Damian lead a team down Road 1, Freya took a team down Road 2 and I took a team down Road 3.

Off we went, in our teams to deliver the goods. After two rounds of these we headed down to Victoria Park for a quick abs circuit – which few people enjoyed, but everybody did anyway. Powering through some crunches and toe taps, building abs of steel to build stronger runners. Hazel requested we do abs earlier in the session next week, so we'll head over to Cherry Tree Wood, weather permitting.

We then headed back to base for stretching and biscuits.

This week's Barnet Biscuit was a Wagon Wheel (type thing) coutesty of Heather

Next week we'll be heading back to Archer for (possibly) our last visit to the pond. Be sure to sign up

Here's a quick summary from TF Freya about the Olympics:

Goodgym Barnet raised the bar and the roof at this weekend’s Goodgym Olympics! One race track, one sunny sky and six heavyweights from the Biscuit Borough.

Louis got us started with an admirable performance in the first heat of the sack race. It didn’t quite equal a medal in the finals, but you got us all pumped! The 5km event saw Jack Concanon demonstrate the finest of form and athletic prowess. Meanwhile, old-timer Mark Gilyead just totally smashed both the 200m and 100m mens, earning him a handsome silver in the latter event.

Barnet’s ladies also put on a great show. An imitable performance came from Heather in the women’s 800m, covering two laps of the track at frankly ridiculous speeds. New-Freya gave the speed of light a run for its money in the ladies’ 400m, so high five that lady next time you see her. Slightly-older-but-still-young-Freya paired with Louis in a mixed gender duo that took on the super serious three-legged race. Barnet was JUST robbed of a bronze thanks to a photo finish which put them millimetres behind Camden.

The day drew to a close with a Goodgym relay, and we cheered a final cheer for Mark and Louis. Then it ended, we paraded about with flags and went to the pub. Quite frankly it was something special. You won’t want to miss it next year.

Be sure to sign up for Race the Neighbours on 2 July!
