Report written by Sevan
Tl;dr: Sevan fixed Mr G's printer, wireless doorbell and one other mystery object
Sevan left Mr G's flat having solved 300% of the problems in the original mission description. That was pretty satisfying, so he enjoyed his run back to Ealing more than usual.
Kash and Sevan tried to help Mr G understand how call waiting worked on his phone. Kash and Sevan called him one after the other, with one or other hearing the hold tone while Mr G spoke to one of them. In the end, the call switching seemed pretty unintuitive on Mr G's iPhone, so they gave up on trying to explain it.
Sevan wanted to disprove Mr G's ghost theory. There must be a sensible explanation to why his belt was flipped around, with the leather loop and prong being on opposite sides of the leather strap. Well, there was only one way to manipulate a belt, so Sevan threaded the strap through the metal buckle and pulled it all the way through. Magically (but not spookily), the belt became usable again.
"How long has that belt been bothering you?" - Sevan
"About a year" - Mr G
"[Censored]" - Mr G
"Sevan is a smart man" - Kash
Take that, Mr G's ghost! ๐ป
Kash and Sevan decided to look at Mr G's doorbell.
He said that it used to have a light on it, but now it didn't and it wasn't ringing ๐. They moved the ringer and Sevan pressed the button, with Kash reporting on whether it rang or not. It didn't ring, then it rang sometimes, then it worked properly ๐. Strange ๐ค. They moved it back to the hallway and it stopped ringing again ๐. Weird. They didn't have a manual. Sevan picked it up and found 2 things that clicked on it. One turned out to be an on/off switch in an easily knockable position. Click and the light came on. So did the ring ding ๐๐๐.
Mr G said that the flat was haunted. He'd lost a grey duvet cover, he had a belt that had inexplicably flipped and had become unusable and now, his doorbell had flippin' well stopped working. That ghost was a real pest.
Mr G led then into the bedroom to show the belt. Kash and Sevan had seen it before and heard the ghost stories. Mr G added some extra background this time. Apparently there had been a fire that gutted the flat when the previous owner lived there. Mr G didn't say if anyone had died or what that had to do with the ghost.
Kash returned with Mr G's shopping. Including 2 mini tins of baked beans and some cod. You can read more about it here.
Mr G and Sevan sat in Mr G's living room talking about friendship and technology. The nature of those 2 things had changed a lot in Mr G's lifetime. He talked about when he was young, there was no internet and nothing that would not be considered modern technology. If you wanted to make friends, you had to go out and talk to people. You would run the gauntlet of rejection in real life, trying to read the signs from the human in front of you. Now, he tried to make friends online, which he found disheartening. It was too easy to lie, to manipulate, to string along and then ghost someone.
Sevan could relate. He was young at the dawn of mobile phones and the internet becoming popular. The moment when analogue and digital flipped. Modern life could be strangely remote.
While Kash left to shop for Mr G's groceries, Sevan got on with fixing his printer. Looking at it, there were 3 lights with no obvious meaning:
What did they mean? Why was the โ ๏ธ not an A? Sevan downloaded the manual and found that it was... pretty useless. It didn't describe the control panel in one place. Luckily, Mr G had the Canon app on his tablet and through that, Sevan found that the printer was out of black ink. That's what the B ๐ก was for. The C was colour and โ ๏ธ was indeed not an A, rather it was an "โ ๏ธ Error! Something's b0rked"
Mr G had a set of spare cartridges, so he recorded videos of Sevan as he checked the ink status on his tablet and also, how he changed the cartridge. The videos were filed for future reference. Once the new cartridge was in, the printer was happy and Mr G was happier too.
Kash and Sevan arrived at Mr G's flat on separate missions. Kash was going shopping, while Sevan would be fixing Mr G's printer. The door was closed, which was unusual. Kash rang the bell and they waited. Another go and still no answer. Kash called and again, there was no answer. Strange.
Eventually, Kash knocked at the door. Hard. After a few minutes, they heard the sound of someone on the phone coming down the stairs. That would be Mr G. As he opened the door, he said:
"Is the doorbell not working?"
"I was on an important call when another came in from a private number."
"I don't know how to use call waiting on my phone, so I couldn't answer it" - Mr G

Top work, well done! But I fear that demystifying the belt will only encourage the poltergeist to new heightsโฆ
