Water water, everywhere but not a drop to drink

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton (he/him)

We brought a real CAN do attitude to our task last night.

It was an uphill journey with some real unique city sites along the way!

On a hot and humid Sheffield eve some sensible GG folk decided to meet us at the task due to the hills, heat, injury or other and the rest of us slogged it up the hill from The Showroom to Arbourthorne primary school to meet Angela at this fantastic garden space used at the school.

The order of the eve was all about watering the trees and plants on site as everything was sooooo dry!

It was a great task with a very definitive aim of getting as much water onto the plants as possible in the time we had. We used watering cans and water harvesting tanks as well as hoses to get as much water into the plants as possible as they were looking very dry.

We were rewarded in our efforts by Angela who provided biscuits and water at the end before we headed back to The Showroom for a stretch off. Celine even went blackberry picking on her way home!

Until next week, happy running :)

Money plants , orange squash welcoming treats

Sheffield Report written by Annie Anthony Mays

We welcome Ernest to our Goodgym group. thank you all for attending. It was fairly a hot day but 7 of us ran from The Showroom Cinema to Union Street, to Common Threads We were made very welcome with orange squash and loads if fruits too. Jess gave us a briefing and explained our tasks. We were all impressed with the 'Money Plants' at the entrance and a lovely photo was taken. We worked in pairs sorting from Baby clothes to adults and placing them in appropriate signage bags . There was also a 'Sports Bag' and we were given first choice to take what we want Not everyone is as lucky as Michelle who managed some lively sporty stuff for herself . We were also given bananas, water melons, plums and other treats. Thank you for your generous amount of treats. All in all the task was carried out with the help of other volunteers too.

From Durham Ox to real cats and lions sculptures

Sheffield Report written by Celine (she/her or they/them)

Our good friends at the walk wheel cycle trust had asked for extra pairs of hands to tackle the local infamous grot spot on the cycle path around the old Durham Ox pub and sorry it looked too: there was litter, vegetation hanging low, plenty of fallen leaf mulch on the path encroaching and shrinking the path to half its width.

Jane and Hafza from the Trust shared the tools and off we went tackling the path from both ends on a strategic pincer movement: 2 of us with shovels, 4 with pickers to start with, then onto brooms and loppers. and before you knew it, we had met in the middle and the cycle paths started to look more like a red carpet!

We took time on the way back to meet with a few cats and with the lion and lionnesses sculptures of the Sheffield children’s hospital " pride of Yorkshire" fundraiser!

Swamping Leaflets in Sheffield City Centre

Sheffield Report written by Annie Anthony Mays

7 runners met up at The Showroom Cinema. 2 runners (Michelle and Celine) could not join us but took some leaflets where they can distribute in their area of home and work in Sheffield. We left a dozen leaflets at The Showroom Cinema because there were none left. I personally left some a week ago. The other 5 runners started running to various pubs, cafes, and hubs that will actually welcome the leaflets. The Rutland Hotel Pub, The Forresters Pub, and various other pubs were really welcoming and we actually ended up for a drink too. Various cafes on Division Street greeted us with respect and kindness. Prior to this I have also taken leaflets to The Circle on Rockingham Street. The runners also walked into hubs where leaflets were placed for the public to take. We also took photos of the installation of The Lions and included our task as a touristy fun run. I also spotted and targeted various groups of people and explained to them about the play and gave them information of where to go. Also met Kiki, a theatre enthusiast and works with Refugees and she informed me that she also will take some leaflets to her church . All in all it was good swamping of leaflets. After the run I personally went back to Utopia Theatre to check how the Opening went and majority that I met said that the play was so emotional, fantastic, overwhelming and would like to see it again.
