Happy New Year

Leicester Report written by Sarah

3 GoodGymmers helped out at Braunstone Parkrun for their New year's day event. We had Tommo wearing his T, Amanda the Run Director and Sheila doing the double with barcode scanning and token sorting at the end.

Weldone all, kicking off the year to a good start looked like a fantastic turnout and your efforts were appreciated by many. Weldone!

Big fish, little fish, plastic box

Leicester Report written by Sarah

While Millfield Primary school had seen the end of the school day, 4 Goodgymmers got straight to work on the woodland area for the children.

Tonight's task was another round of filling the wheel barrows with woodchip and laying the woodland trail path. Although there was a spanner in the works, the wheel barrows were missing ..fear not we improvised and used plastic box's and our hands, luckily I remembered the gardening gloves and carried a rake on my short run.

Rosie was back for more! After meeting Rosie on our Big Help Out day she was back for her first group session, fantastic to see you again and awesome work getting stuck in and cycling to the task.

Working as a team we could see the woodchip pile going down, with Nick and Tommo filling box's like no tomorrow and carrying 2 at a time, while Rosie made it into a path making light work of the task.

We did laugh at the end I looked like I'd been bit by a huge mosquito but it was just a mark from my head torch! Weldone team fantastic efforts all round once again.

Schools Out

Leicester Report written by Sarah

While Millfield school had seen the end of the school day, the Goodgymmers crept in to continue the work we started in the summer holidays, creating a woodland area for the children to learn about nature and have fun. We were greeted with a mound of woodchip right next to the start of the woodland trail.

The team were straight to work filling the wheel barrows with woodchip and laying the woodland trail path, Mel did great job flattening the path with her sweeping brush. Meanwhile Tommo was placing bird boxes he had made in secret locations for the school children to try and spot them through the trail, there's 4 to search for.

Lindsay did an amazing job cutting back more branches, some with berries that we thought could be a risk with kids. We also litter-picked a bag and Nick played curling with Ashley, she swept as he wheel borrowed more woodchip making him go faster, teamwork!

Before we knew it the day was drawing in on us, 3 quarters of the way through the mound, it was home time. Weldone team fantastic efforts all round, deffinatly some strength work ticked off this evening.

Picnic Pick

Leicester Report written by Sarah

8 Goodgymmers met at Everards Meadows to walk along to the main cycle route through Leicester, route 6, to keep the area clean and tidy supporting the Sustrans Charity. Pleased to see there wasn't too much litter, but still enough to keep us out of trouble. Although Stu still had time for panks, balancing a dogs old ball on top of my bag, me not noticing carried it all the way back to base.

Afterwards we had our little picnic with Athletic Brewing Co. non alcoholic beers, everyone loved them, even non-beer drinkers enjoyed them too giving a fruity , slightly sweet flavour and aroma. We bumped into 3 running friends who were at the right place at the right time for a beer, perfect summer evening.

Hot off the press take 2

Leicester Report written by Sarah

6 Goodgymers enjoyed an evening stroll to help deliver the Braunstone Alert, a brochure by the charity B-inspired, to tell the community about the events they have and the valuable foodshare service they offer, supporting the community.

Weldone everyone, shout out to Siânna and Sue for coming back after their first session last week, great to have you on board, love how keen you are to get stuck in.

With our chief photographer being on holiday I completely forgot to take a group pic, although there is a pic of us in the brochure we were delivering which is pretty cool.

B-inspired pass on their appreciation for us taking on our regular brochure rounds plus we covered an extra road whilst one of their volunteers is on holiday. hopefully more people will know about the services they offer for the community and enjoy having a read of the free brochure. Keep up the good work and getting fit at the same time, Stu ran to and from the task this eve, weldone.

Wheel barrow of laughs

Leicester Report written by Sarah

Second of our Tuesday evening summer sessions saw 4 Goodgymers run from Jenno’s, Everard’s Meadows, to run to Millfield Primary School, taking the scenic route through Osier Nature Reserve. We then met another 6 Goodgymers to bring our group to a huge 10.

With 3 new members this evening they had a tour of what we had completed last week, and the wigwams were built with strength as they hadn't moved an inch. Shout outs to Annie Siânna and Sue on their first Goodgym sessions. There was a common trend that they all work in schools around Leicester from teachers to teaching assistants we were well in the knowledge this eve. Sianna and Sue joined forces with Mel and Lynn making the path more defined finding logs and sticks, meanwhile Annie helped cut down overgrown weeds from the path with Stu. I'm hoping Stu has a rest this morning as he had already ran 10 miles today before running atleast another 6 this evening, forgetting that wednesday night is race night!

Dave was busy using some recycled rope from his boat to make the wigwams safer and created a wigwam tunnel along with a little tyre swing, deffinatly using his knott skills.

Pleased to see Tommo join us again, working with Jimmy further down the path to wheelbarrow the rest of the wood chip. Time was soon up for some of us to make the return run where mine and Jimmy's bikes were waiting for us.

Weldone team fantastic efforts from everyone, the secret garden is really taking shape now, once finished will really benefit the whole school for the kids to learn about nature in a fun way, I know we will have fun doing good whilst keeping fit.

Wigwam wins

Leicester Report written by Sarah

We’ll see which wigwam is still standing next week!

10 Goodgymers met at Jenno’s, Everard’s Meadows, to run to Millfield Primary School, taking the scenic route through Osier Nature Reserve, my everyday route when the kids are at school so there was zero chance of getting lost.

A popular task this eve we were well equipped with the school’s new tools and the contents of Dave and Mel’s boot, we quickly got stuck in with trimming the hedges a little and marking out the woodland path with the aim of creating a secret garden at the back of the school field for the children to enjoy whilst learning about nature and having fun.

Great to see Tommo back in action after his broken foot and hand, he fills us with inspiration after he still managed to win Beat the street (tapping beat box’s all around Leicester), covering 2640 miles on his bike earning 76,000 points! 3rd time he’s won.

Shout out to Sarah on her first GoodGym session, hope you enjoyed yourself and keep the running up you’re doing great. Was really good to hear Martin has knocked a good 2 minutes off his 5km time, after working hard for 6 weeks sticking to a plan, Weldone Martin.

After an hour or so the area was starting to take shape as you can see from the brilliant pics Mel, Nick and Ashley took, there was a bit of competition over who’s wigwam was the best, I liked the effort Stu made making a camouflaged seat.

Time was up and we all set off for the return run, with Stu still feeling competitive he tried to race me up the hill!

Weldone team fantastic efforts from everyone, making an excellent start to a project that once finished will really benefit the whole school for the kids to learn about nature in a fun way, I know we will have fun doing good whilst keeping fit.
