Never too-tyred to help at Full Cycle

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Emma Crowe

As a group we get head over wheels running - or pedalling - over to Full Cycle, an independent, not for profit group, to help them get ahead on a few time consuming tasks.

This week the many hands of nine GoodGymers made light work checking and labelling dozens of inner tubes. Jas, Tom and Sabir focused on removing the inner tubes from a pile of tyres while Luke, Rachel, Claire, Julie, Dave and Emma pumped and deflated dozens of inner tubes waiting for our attention, sorting out the good from bad. It may not sound like a significant job but with the air tight ones all rolled up, labelled and stored in different crates for the different sizes, the maintenance team will now be able to easily reach for the right inner tube to fit in a bike they can sell second hand or give to someone in need in Kingston. And don’t worry about the punctured inner tubes - they all get recycled.

A run back along Kingston Road saw us back at the Quaker Centre, where our cool down gave us an opportunity to check who’ll be attending the range of other great tasks lined up for this week.

From soy to toy

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Rachel White

Claire, Rachel, Dave and Camilla met up at The Lamb pub, not for a drink, but for a stretch and to warm up for the slow hill up to Tolworth Recreation Centre. Claire and Dave headed off in the lead and Camilla and Rachel took a steady pace for the long climb. Once we arrived we met Emma and the 3 Js - Jana, Jade and Jas! Susan, from Kingston Pantry, welcomed us in and explained what tasks needed to be done.

With such a good turn out we split into two groups with one team heading into the food bank for a deep clean. All the items were taken down and the shelves were given a thorough wipe down with antibacterial spray. Fridges were wiped down too. The other group was taken up to the stay and play toy cupboard where everything needed a re-organisation. All the boxes, toy equipment, books, mats and dressing up clothes were taken out of the cupboard, sorted into their appropriate box and then put back in a slightly more systematic approach.

It was just after 8pm when we finished and reconvened in The Pantry. We had the great honour of congratulating Jade who not only had done 100 good deeds but also achieved the most good deeds in Kingston in the January Challenge - she topped 28 good deeds. What a legend! She certainly deserved her crown, cap AND trophy this night. Well done, Jade! So pleased for your achievements and thank you for being a good sport and letting us dress you up.

And a big warm welcome to Camilla for joining our group on her second task to date! Great to hang out with you and hope to see you at another task soon.

Taking stock of the stocktake

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Rachel White

It was our pleasure to drop in on our group run this week to help the new student foodbank at Kingsgate Church, which is sadly needed to tackle student food poverty in Kingston.

A running and walking group made their way there to help volunteers Sarah and Alison tidy up and help with a stocktake, getting the shelves ready for more donations arriving this week. We discovered quite a few Goodgymers (Julie, Dave and Jade!) had experience of auditing and felt quite at home with a spreadsheet - bit of a change from our usual manual handling tasks!

It was great to welcome Luke to the group, who joined Claire, Jas, Jade, Rachel and Petra sorting out the shelves. Ellie and Emma armed themselves with cloths and cleaning products to wipe down the fridges and freezers.

Even though it has only been open a couple of months the weekly food pantry has been overwhelmingly popular, providing students with food, personal hygiene and cleaning items as well as access to optional pastoral support and signposting to additional services available.

We have said we’ll come back when they need some extra hands to do another blitz. Luckily not as cold this week as we ran back along the river to the Quaker Centre and did our cool-down!

Tangerine Dream

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Julie

This evening Rachel, Dave, Jade and Julie met at the Lamb in Surbiton for a chilly run up the hill to Tolworth recreation centre and the Kingston Pantry food bank for our quarterly deep clean.

We met Jana and Tom there and Susan gave us a quick update and showed us around before we got to work. Jana, Tom and Jade started in the walk in larder, cleaning the shelves and disinfecting the fridge.

Dave, Rachel and Julie worked on the main area. Julie moved all the items off the shelves to give them a good clean, while Dave got to work on the fridge and Rachel cleaned out the fresh produce area - surprise finds included a tangerine and a potato down the back of the bread baskets.

Jas joined and got straight onto the tins of baby food and fish, making sure the area was clean before organising everything back neatly. We were helped along by a delicious cup of hot chocolate from Susan to warm us up - thank you!

Once we were done with the shelves Jade came round with Henrietta the hoover to clear up any crumbs, closely followed by Julie with the mop. With lots of us working we had to organise ourselves carefully to make sure no one left muddy footprints on the newly mopped floor!

With that the cleaning was finished and after a few photo opportunities we headed back for a quick run down the hill to the Lamb. We’ll be back in another 3 months for the next deep clean.

Off the rails!

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Julie

This morning we were back at the BHF for the second time this week, helping to hang and sort the mountain of donated clothes they received from a TV production company.

After a warm welcome from Christine we headed downstairs to the piles of bags, and worked our way through. Jas, Mira and Saber took over the men's clothes rails and found some smart suits and jackets. Melissa, Emma, Emily, Jana and Julie worked through the women's bags and hung up some smart work clothes, winter jumpers and even some sparkly Christmas party outfits!

After filling 12 rails ready for the shop floor we packed up ready to go home, but not before grabbing a few bargains from the shop!

A big welcome to Emma on her first task this morning, and well done to Jas on his 10th task.
