Hang on, hangers are needed

Croydon Report written by Conroy

Last we ran 2km, to assist the organisers of Croydon Refugee Day Centre. We welcomed Sivan to her first Goodgym session, she found out about us on twitter and we ticked all the boxes in what she was looking for in volunteering. We also had Ele attending her first group run, she has been in some community missions before however time has allowed her to venue out to a group run session.

Simon was on site awaiting our arrival, he had a few task for us to complete and set about explaining what they were when we got into the hall.

First up was gather all the empty hangers from the clothing rail and arranging them on the hanger holders ready for the next batch of clothes to be hung for next week's arrivals.

There was an area where stuff was being stored but the church is intending on hiring out the hall for functions, so we were asked to tidy up the area and remove any boxes that had been packed at eye level to be placed at a lower lever behind the screens.

We then went through the clothes on the rail to ensure they had been labeled and where labels were missing we add them and placed the clothes according to their sizes in the correct order.

Ingrid and Ian also sorted a bag of donated clothes, before we all chipped in at removing the clothes rails from the big room to the storage room so the hall would be empty for the next users.

Next week we'll be heading to St Augustine's will you be joining us? Sign up here

How did it end-Duppas clean?!

Croydon Report written by Peter Rhodes

On a bright and clear Autumn morning 4 good-gymers visited Duppas Hill Recreation Ground, for what has become a semi-regular Litter Pick.

Somewhat unexpectedly, litter seemed as scarce as the clouds in the sky at first glance. Pleasantly bemused, the volunteers scattered to the four corners of the park, certain that their 'treasure' was out there somewhere...

90 minutes later their dogged determination had paid off. 9 bin bags of rubbish collected and the park looking cleaner than this good-gymer has ever seen!

Ele completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Ele was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Picking pots, packets and plastic

Croydon Report written by Kate Bowden

This sunny Saturday morning 7 Good Gymers made their way to Purley Way Playing Fields to tackle the litter. It is quite a large area but we were determined to do as much as we could in our hour and a half. The Don't Mess with Croydon team met us to give us the equipment. Armed with litter pickers and bags, we began along the tree line around the edge of the park which had accumulated quite a few bits. After filling several bags we spread out into the fields and football pitches where although the litter was more spread out there was still plenty of it, particularly take away sauce pots. When we had finished we realised the first bags we had filled had already been taken away (very efficient!) so we weren't able to take a full photo but think in total we must have filled between 15-20 bags. A great job was done by everyone, and a great first task for Eleanor, David and Daniel who completed their first missions and their first ever litter pick. And a busy Saturday for Peter and Ingrid who were both off to another mission after which would make 2 missions for Ingrid and 3 for Peter today. Well done guys!
