Welcome to GoodGym Croydon!

We're a friendly and sociable group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help charities, community organisations and projects in our area.

Come and join us on Tuesday 7 December 2021 for our weekly group task.

We meet at 6.45pm and start running/walk or cycle at 7.00. We will work hard on our task for 30 to 45 minutes, have a fun fitness session then we all run/walk or cycle back to the start venue by 8.30pm.

The Task:

Helping Care4Calais Croydon to sort through their donations.

Care4Calais is a volunteer run charity delivering essential aid and support to refugees living in the UK, Northern France and Belgium.

The Run/walk/cycle: This week the distance is approximately 4km.

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners/walkers and cyclist of all abilities. It is often possible to walk/cycle to some of the tasks if you would prefer.

When jogging we always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

The Essentials:

We meet at Solutions Health & Fitness at 6.45pm, a short walk from East Croydon Station. The entrance to Solutions is easy to miss on your first visit and is to the right of the Lansdowne Hotel entrance.

If you are coming straight from East Croydon Station you can reach Lansdowne Road more quickly by coming out the new side entrance from the bridge onto Dingwall Road. The entrance to Solutions is easy to miss on your first visit and is to the right of the Lansdowne Hotel entrance.

Find us in reception. We'll be the ones with red running kit on.

There's space to change, leave bags and toilets. Ladies to use changing room in the basement and gents there’s a changing room on the ground floor. We're not planning to do anything dangerous, but GoodGym takes no responsibility for your safety during group runs, you participate at your own risk. Participants accepts full responsibility for items stored at the start location & GoodGym will not be held liable for any losses / damages.

The lockers in the changing rooms need a padlock so please remember to bring one with you or you could share with a friend (there are some for hire at the main desk for 50p – padlocks that is not friends!).

Un-be-Leaf-able

Tue 30 Nov
Report written by Conroy

Last night 6 members of Goodgym Croydon, along with an employee of OCTOPUS (Sacha) and residents from ECCO, came together to help tidy up the area around some of the raised beds along the boulevard.

Jerry was kind enough to remind us that on our last visit we had filled 26 bags and commented on how good it would be to be able to surpass that number tonight. Not that he was putting any pressure on us but gave us a target of 27.

Due to the change in season there was litter and a lot of leaves on the ground. Some of us swept and bagged the leaves and litter while others pruned the edges of the overgrown raised beds. During our work we discussed the upcoming Christmas party and secret Santa and the likelihood of this happening with COVID restrictions. We found out about Magda's solo mission litter picking in Park Hill and her discovery of Coca Cola cans (see attached picture) and also discussed Beth's1000th good deed, new badge and t-shirt. Some of you may not know Beth but given her recent achievement it would be nice to go and give her an extra cheer, congratulating her on reaching her 1000th good deed :)

We can gladly report that we smashed our previous number of 26 bags with a whopping 32 bags of litter and leaves, in his eagerness to achieve this Jerry even put a bag full of our high-vis vests in with the rubbish! (Which we did remove!)

Upon completing our task we bid Jerry farewell and parted ways.

Next week we are off to a new task - find out about it here.

Fancy a few challenges leading up to Xmas?

Seven Goodgymers for the Three raised beds and lawn mowing

Tue 23 Nov
Report written by Conroy

Last night seven Goodgym Croydon members converged at Solution Health Club, as customary we normally do a warm up before setting off, but our warm up location varies depending on where our task is.

Last night we did our warm up next to the Withgift Centre where we were joined by a few members of the community, before setting off on a 3.5km run towards Thornton Heath, where we were going to meet Pam from Unique Roots to do some work on the allotment.

When we arrived Pam was at the gate to meet us, she was in a slight bit of pain and asked us to ignore her groans as she has recently started to work as a PT and and her current leg routine is still bedding in so she had a bit of that post workout pain.

When we got to the plot Pam explained she had some weeding to be done along with cutting the grass by the entrance of their allotment. Ian drew the straw for cutting the grass while the others settled for weeding the beds.

I was stuck with taking the photos and being a lamp post, at least I had the opportunity to move between the raised bed and Ian mowing the grass.

Within our allocated time we managed to weed 3 raised beds, mowed the grass and planted some bulbs that will be at the entrance of the allotment greeting Pam and the users when in bloom.

Before leaving Pam showed us the stuff she had growing in the polytunnel including two recently gifted banana trees. We bid our farewell and heading off back on our return 3.5km run to solutions.

Next week we are off to the boulevard to help ECCO sign up here.

If you are not in our Goodgym Croydon whatsapp group we have agreed on a date for our Xmas do 22 December 2021, a venue has been booked but we are also going for a few light drinks before if you would like to attend please contact myself or a member of the taskforce.

Un-BEE-lievable!

Sun 21 Nov
Report written by Ingrid Buchanan

Mrs M wanted a large pile of garden rubbish bagged up. I had nearly reached the bottom of the heap when I noticed some bees and realised that there was a hive in the soil. I left the remaining rubbish to protect the nest and warned Mrs M (although the bees seemed docile despite me nearly bagging up their home!).
