Flyering into the sunset

Monday 27th March 2023

Written by Manjit Birk

It's Summer time! I think I almost got a suntan today (almost!). A bit of deja-vu at today's session. Not only did we meet at our pre Covid base location (Salt Hill Park), but we also had Jenni back in the team..

Our task this evening was to deliver some leaflets for Slough Borough Council and Artful Hub/Antz Kids

Streets Ahead

I was trying to be prepared today, so earlier on in between teams calls and collecting kids from school I put the two flyers together in bundles of 50 pairs making 5 packs. This way each GG'er would have 100 leaftlets to distribute. That was the plan anyway.

So before we headed out to the streets of Slough, we did a warm up lap of the Salt Hill as our 'run/way to' part!

We then split up into 2 teams with team M&S going up and down Baylis Rd, whilst team PJ went down Woodland Ave and the side streets.

Within 30 minutes we were done! Well Team PJ were… Team M&S still had another handful to do, so we headed back into the park and to the houses around Salt hill.

250 leaflets distributed!

Next week we are back at Ujala for another go at the garden space.

Paint no mountain high enough

Monday 13th February 2023

So after 3 weeks on the artistic task at Artful Hub, we were running low on supplies so had to make a few decisions on tonight’s task which we went a big rouge on!

My memory can be a bit sketchy but I’m sure Eva asked us to use the white paint over the lime green areas that the yellow paint didn’t quite stretch to!

With a few last minute decisions made the white went on lovely with a few cloudy patches by Sandy and Gauri.

The remaining yellow was mixed with a blue to create a green! Thank goodness we remembered our primary colours from primary school! Nimi and Abdul did a remarkable job at creating the greeny clouds with white swirls.. the paint all put together by mixologist Harsha!

With so much artistic flare amongst the group tonight the end result was pretty amazing (considering we got off to a bad art!). We just hope Eva likes it!

Our art will go on…

Monday 6th February 2023

Tonight was round two of our task to help Artful Hub with their unit makeover. We had already helped move all the items from their previous unit and given the walls a lick of paint. So now all that was left was to give a walls another coat to keep them warm!

With a smaller group, Nimi, Harsha, Hina and I met at Sainsbury's/Tesco’s and then made our way into Slough Town. With a Starry night above us we all had the 'when you gotta Van Gogh ya gotta Van Gogh' vibe tonight! En route we collected Agnie to make the famous five!

On arrival, we called for security to let us into the precinct (hoping not to see Mr Rat again!).

And that's when the real fun began.

Moving displays, putting out sheets, getting brushes and rollers ready for the task.

We improvised with the kit we had and made rollers fit the handles …. sometimes you have to blend the rules though and us pirates love arrrr-t (you had to be there to know this joke!)

  • Painting to perfection we were lucky to have a skilled painter decorator Agnie with us tonight. She did an amazing job!

  • Hina joined us in her first task and soon got the hang of the GoodGym gang!

  • Nimi was all fired up to paint like Picasso

  • Whilst Harsha was chilled and making sure she got the strokes right.

Next week, we will need to re-arrange the leaflet task in order to finish off this task as we could do with one more spoonful of mustard!

Smells like team spirit

Monday 30th January 2023

Well the Slough City Rollers were in full effect tonight! With our Ratatouille dinners being cooked (hopefully not by the rat we saw in Queensmere!), we were raring to get going.

Our task was to give the Artful Hub's new unit a fresh lemon like look. With a nice swift walk down from Sainsbury’s into Town we were ready to paint it red!

Once at the unit, we quickly got to work moving items, finding the paint items and then getting into the spirit of it all.

We managed to get most of one wall done in 45 minutes but will be back next week to finish the job off.

Cos that’s how we roll

I like to move it move it!

Friday 13th January 2023

So today we did our follow up to Monday evening task, in that we moved all the items we had moved down to Artful Hubs new unit (across the way!)

Lovely Jubbley

With the trotters r us team raring to go, we took no time at all in moving all of Eva's items across!

From me to you, you to me we lifted, shifted and trollied over crates of packed items including kitchen wear, cleaning items, arts n craft, tables and chairs - we did a cushty job!

In 90 minutes we managed to get everything shifted and even had time to help Eva reset some items into her nicely stacked shelves that Nisha and Helen took so much care over stacking up. Think Helen might have a little headache from them though!

With a tag team of keeping both units manned we did a crate job is enduring all items were safely transported.

Well done to everyone....

Crate job all round

Monday 9th January 2023

Written by Manjit Birk

Our original task was always going to be a bit touch and go. Not only did we need a dry Monday but also a dry Sunday, Saturday and even Friday beforehand in order to sweep up all the pine needles...(almost like a dry January!, which we know is a struggle in it's own right). So Needless to say we did have a back up plan of helping the lovely Eva at Artful Hub with a pack up task.

Artful Hub are due to move out of their Queensmere unit as the precinct is due to be partially closed off. So our task tonight was to simply help them pack up their belongings into boxes ready to be transported out.

With meet up point changed to Sainsbury's at 18.30 we were set to go. Great to have Kam join us for her first ever session. And Peter along for his second. After a quick warm up we were ready to roll!

On arrival Eva met us and gave us the task breakdown. It was at first sight a monster task! We all wondered how we were going to lift, shift, pack and stack all these items in 45 minutes!

But actually we did a crate job!!!

With a bit of thinking outside the box we had an action packed evening and managed to move a billion items (slight exaggeration!) from upstairs to downstairs and took down all the window dressing.

And that's wrap

Next week we will be back at Wexham Park Hospital helping to litter pick their car park. Our meet up point is Shaggy Calf Lane, outside King Wexham pub.
